The breadth of charges that could be brought against Trump and his cronies are pretty massive.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Especially with the more info that comes out. It looks like Trump administration officials deliberately hampered the defense of the Capitol.

Is that why his administration are all resigning? Giving themselves time to flee?

I think you need to dial down the paranoia a little bit too, honestly, Azath.

That seems more than unlikely, but maybe I'm wrong. Don't think I am though. Think this is a small dose of some needed reality for a lot of Republicans/conservatives who have been hand-waving and nihilistically going along with stuff.

Edit: Yeah, if that stuff happened then he'd be up for a treason trial posthaste.

'Republicans I spoke to on Wednesday echoed the view that Trump wants to blow things up on his way out the door. "He'll want to burn the whole thing down," a Republican strategist said. "Trump doesn't give a shit about anyone but himself."'

https://www.vanityfa...35wfkoqG9szb4CU

I don't think Trump has any genuine moral compunctions about murder or mass murder. But his fear of physical danger will (hopefully) stop him. I'm almost certain he's considered it. The president can issue pardons for treason; if Don Jr. (or other extreme loyalist) goes from Acting Secretary of State to President he could pardon Trump, then resign so Trump can pardon him. And Congress can't impeach if [Edit: the number of votes required for the 2/3rds Senate majority cannot be reached because of murder or unlawful detainment (not sure if how quorum rules would work if enough non-loyalists were murdered to give Trump loyalists a majority---they probably wouldn't).] I doubt the rest of the world would dare any sort of direct military action to remove him, aside from assassination perhaps. The US military or intelligence/law enforcement agencies would have to actively intervene to stop him, instead of just passively refusing illegal orders.

But there's also the question of what to do if he doesn't seem poised for those extremes, but he does warrant invocation of the 25th amendment... and there aren't enough votes to permanently remove him. I think the knowledge that Pence and Pelosi could have him executed and render each other immune to prosecution with pardons would be enough to deter him.

Look, I get he's too deep into the con to quit.
But I don't think Trump is gonna play chicken with the entire military.

If he goes rogue and has his supporters murder the government, his opponents, and the acting parliament, he himself will be gunned down, and US will end up with martial law until new elections could take place.

Edit: I feel that the most appropriate end to this farce would be him seeking political asylum in Venezuela and leading a "government in exile" from there.

Nah, the most appropriate end to the Trump administration would be "The Donald " waiting in line at a soup kitchen a few months from now. Likewise, for every person that has been evicted due to the inability of Republicans to pass adequate Covid relief, an elected Republican should be forced to live on the street. Start with the Tea Party types ("Freedom Caucus" my ass).

Realist. Just like the big banks with the GFC there will be ZERO consequences.
Hell, some of them may even somehow come out ahead (also like the bank execs after the GFC).

Why? Because money. It is the glue that holds the bastards together.

RE the protestor who was shot - there's a video, and it's not pretty and I don't recommend finding it.

What it reminded me of was something out of a Romero film. Folk throwing their lives away for a cult of personality. I don't understand it.

One of the smarter lawyers I follow on Twitter thinks it might be an indication that they know even more about this than we do. Considering the reports on Wednesday that suggested the White House (or Giuliani, or Stone, or whoever) was actually in touch with the rioters inside the Capitol.

It's a good point. BUT...I will say that the FBI is already investigating the most present and identifiable people in the mob. I saw a whole slew of them had been contacted by the FBI because a lot of them (like the viking horns guy, the guy from Pelosi's office ec.t) are readily identifiable and well known MAGA chuds. So the notion that they aren't going to answer for crimes is a little soon to say. Yes, they didn't get largely arrested on site (which is absolutely a dereliction of duty!), but they might make BIG examples of the instigators.

Also, to what Terez said, I heard that the Capitol police were SCALED back before the day...on purpose. Like they had the LEAST amount of police they could have had....so they could try to look blameless and "overwhelmed" when they "let" the MAGAs in.

Man wore work badge when participating in insurrection!

What a goddamned idiot! But, I suppose that is implied by him simply being there.

I am not always in favour of people losing their jobs over something they did, but I absolutely agree that if one of your employees participate in an insurrection, a company should have the absolute right to fire them!
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

That seems like a good avenue to hurt these assholes. In the wallet.

Dominion will never get 1.3b settlement, but any settlement and hand all legal fees to them, bury the bastards like Rush and Sean in litigation and bills
