My impression of American politics is that anyone involved in politics needs a wife/husband, a couple children, preferably a dog and some kind of house in an upper suburban looking neighbourhood, maybe a local church nearby they can pretend to attend. Doesn't matter how fake and plastic it looks, appearance is all that matters.

Can't have the family falling a part. It would seem like you're not as perfect as your fake smile.

Who do conventions appeal to anymore? Anyone NOT firmly entrenched in a party actually watch these for substance? I think they've mostly gone the way of party platforms (which used to be part and parcel of their whole existence) and have become all together unimportant.

People will vote based on preexisting notions, political commercials, and debate performance. Probably in that respective order. Little research into the actual person running and why they are running in the first place.

I am very much against throwing such descriptions around but the nationalistic elements of Trepumplicans at their rallies have pretty much the same language as Mussolini, Mosley, Hitler and Franco and all the little petty dictators of Europe (then and now) and it is blood chilling. It follows exactly the 'logic' of recorded fascist speeches of the 20s, 30s and 40s. I've of course researched this stuff for years. Speech rhythms, crowd-working, comfort sound-bites... I almost regret checking their rhetoric out. Its tones are identical, This isn't the Republicanism I understand. It appeals wholly to rightist jingoism and reminds me that without the support of conservative Christians (mostly Catholic) and rich industrialists not one of those extremists could have succeeded even briefly in damaging seriously their own countries and everyone else's. This is the beginning. Remember the ruins of Berlin and London ? That was the consequence of fascist rhetoric. Nothing less to look forward to. I survived the rockets on London.
