It has been interesting to see how much attention Ferguson MO has been getting worldwide. I know it's relatively little, but still, I see European folks posting about it on Facebook and Twitter.

It has actually been the lead story for a couple of news services here. There's also usually a passing reference to the disintegration of American society/ fall of the American Empire-type thing.

EDIT:
This is typical of the website coverage here in .au
Story is usually on the front 'page'.

"The companies admit that the ads could get, well, creepy. An ad could pop up in the middle of a television show asking why you haven't signed up to volunteer for your local senator, even though you've expressed support for him or her in the past. Or, there could be an ad on your birthday that reads, "Happy Birthday, Jim. How about celebrating by giving Friends of the Earth $25, like you did last year?"

That indeed sounds creepy.

Too bad that this is by no means revolutionary. Most social network sites, most notably Facebook, have already implemented personalized advertisement. The truly scary part of it is that they don't make it too obvious. Sure, every has experienced that if you look at, say, camping equipment on the Internet, you're going to see adds of that equipment everywhere. However, most personalized advertisement is more subtle, Facebook, for instance, carefully modulates the content you see to match your predicted commercial interests, including what messages of your peers are displayed at the top of the page. If you have looked into buying camping equipment last April and your behavioral pattern next April resembles the pattern of last year, the number of camping equipment adds and camping mentions in messages is going to rise. The downside of this is not that it just shows you what you truly desire, but it subtly manipulates you to desire what you could potentially have (chosen to) desire. (But isn't that the function of all advertisement?)

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master — that's all.'

Lul.

A fox news link about fearmongering and claiming 'democrats' are lying about a hardware failure? Good fucking luck. The Travesty here is the IRS' data retention policy, which is horribly substandard compared to what they force private companies to do.

I would suggest Reagan was the worst president ever. Ruined the economy, armed and trained terrorists, and is held up as the 'standard' of conservatives everywehre, but w/e.

Why you think the Republicans are going to 'control everything' just boggles me, but w/e.

*shrug* if you want to get into that, let's talk about such sterling "freedom fighters" as the Haganah, the Irgun and the Stern.

Nobody's conscience is clean on this. Move along.

( Well Clinton could win this next round, but Obama is really Fing her over atm...like wow) All I'm suggesting is the next swing is going to be brutal...Dems are seeing the popular opinion...Media is rebelling now.

I posted the Fox link on purpose. Sorry it was mean..wanted to see something. Plenty of sources out there that tell the same story. Though lately American Journalism seems like public relations if you know the difference.
There are plenty of IT savvy people that understand their is no reason..to "scratch" a Hard drive, or throw one away. This should have people go to jail.

Pretty sure I'm a somewhat 'IT Savvy' people. There is absolutely a reason to securely dispose of hard drives, even if they aren't working. You can still pull information off hard drives that are broken unless you shatter the platters or melt them down. Just sit down and accept that hardware breaks.

What? I'm honestly not understanding what you are asking me here.

I don't understand the whole conservative viewpoint of the government as more unwieldy, with different departments not knowing what others are doing, compared to the larger private corporations. The Government is a collection of individuals. It requires compartmentalization to function correctly and it requires the people at the top to be competent regarding their supposed areas of expertise.

However, what we have now are people who don't want to spend money on anything because 'government bad' so they are just trying to destroy it to prove how 'bad' it is. Meanwhile they still get their paychecks and think they are 'experts' on everything they decide to try to pass laws on, despite having no foundation, education, or even talking to a professional about economics or IT or anything fucking else.

The simple fact of the IRS Emails thing is that a P2P email system has these kinds of flaws. HDD's break all the time. We are constantly replacing them at work, in servers that have better quality parts than the crap that gets put in 'budget' PCs, that sit in well regulated environments to elongate their lifespans.

Meanwhile, you have routing servers that know an email was sent. They don't know the content of the email, so you can't pull that email up off the servers like you can in a server based environment. You have to search through peoples HDDs to find them. If the primary HDD is gone, you can try searching through all the correspondence (which is what they have been doing and the thousands of emails they have already delivered to congress), but as it was a couple years ago most likely numerous of those PCs have been replaced and have had their HDDs wiped.

Meanwhile with the SCOTUS horrible citizens united decision, the IRS office in question had their workload quadrupled without being able to hire any more people because Congress are bunch of fucktards that can't seem to understand (or have other reasons) that quadrupling the workload of a division and not increasing their manpower is going to result in cutting corners AND longer delays.

'Tea Party' is a blatantly political term. Anyone applying for a non-political tax-free entity with that in their name should absolutely get a second look. So should 'Democrats' and 'Repblicans' and a bunch of other terms. And guess what, they were! Imagine that. Have you noticed that the press has found that the vast majority of these poor, discriminated against Tea Party groups violated the standards of the 'non political tax exempt' status they requested (and all received)?

http://www.irs.gov/C...1%28c%29%284%29

That is what they asked for. 501c4. They could have gone tax exempt as political non profits, but they would have had to make public their list of donors. If you fucking want transparency in our government, thats a fucking wonderful place to start.

Meanwhile, none of these organizations are going to get anything from the IRS because the IRS is so understaffed that they can't enforce this kind of thing. Thanks, GOP!

But please, keep talking that 'Obama is the worst president ever' spiel. Avoided war in Libya, Iran, and Ukraine, despite numerous conservatives urging military action in all three? Fucking good work on foreign policy there. Americans (all people) as a whole are stupid morons. Public opinion polls only matter when talking about who is going to get elected. You need to wait until shit starts getting declassified and we see (5-10 years down the line) the repercussions (or not) of foreign policy before we can say if it is good or bad.

Now, I'll happily admit that Obama certainly isn't the best president ever. But he's the best we've had since Clinton (who essentially just road the Stock Market Bubble) and he is dealing with the most obstructionist congress ever. The problem lies there, not with Obama.

Yea, the harddrive was no longer working. The IRS tried to recover the data and couldn't. I'm baffled why this is a 'scandal'. This is every day shit for people who work in IT.

Oh noes! The most likely and common problem with hard drives, that happens all the time at random, happened to a HARD DRIVE.

Don't you see???? The most unlikely possible course of events is actually to blame!

This is because Obama is simultaneously a socialist powermad tyrant conspiring to bring the US to its knees and also a weak pansy skinny coward who can't compare to Glorious Putin's strong manly muscles and oh how I wish he could embrace me~

I am constantly working even when not in the office (answering emails, checking data connections, checking to make sure that scripts have ran...ext..) . I can only imagine that it is ten times worse if you are the President of the United states.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

The classic republican response of attributing your weaknesses to the opponent. Bush went golfing a ridiculous amount, let's say Obama did it more, despite the evidence! Also executive orders, of which Obama has used less of than the majority of presidents including those preceding him!

e: also golfing is a relaxing sport that is low intensity enough to work through, also also you probably forgot the reactions to him playing basketball

Bush Did Nothing WrongTM

Also it is as big an actual scandal as Benghazi or Whitewater, aka it isn't. Besides, more left wing organisations were both investigated and also denied in that same so-called witch hunt you reference.

One of the great side-effects of my job is that I get to soak in what children and teenagers truly think about the world around them. And it always stuns me just how lockstep and brainwashed they are by their parents at such an early age. Frankly, it makes me respect anyone who was able to overcome that environment to reach their own opinions and deeply held beliefs.

As a political scientist/historian/whatever I knew that to be the case, that environment is far more statistically significant in children's political tendencies than most other thing other than perhaps socio-economic status; however, it's quite another thing to read party lines being unerringly spit back as if they were multiplication charts.

It's terribly interesting, and terribly saddening.

This is my topic and I'll change strides if I want.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Would you institute a system of education that holds more Critical Thinking, or place far more value during say High School? I really don't think this actually gains true value at the public high school level..my belief is Critical thinking, civics and Home Economics classes should be brought back and kids should have exposure each year...
