Heh, Ron Paul isn't much for compromising his principles, as evidenced by his completely consistent voting record. But seriously, right now the GOP is holding their nose over Romney so how different could Paul be. :D

I'd hold my nose over Romney too, but he will still get people out to support him. If Paul was the GOP candidate, I don't think the republican base would come out to support him.

How are the political ads shaping up for the race so far? The one thing I notice watching TV in the states is how many goddamn TV ads there are concerning politics. We have pretty strict campaign spending/donation limits here in Canada so the ads are kept to a bare minimum for the most part. I imagine with the election less than 1/2 a year away now, things are heating up.

Is it the usual "he's a bad guy!", "no, he's a bad guy!" attack ads? Anything interesting or super controversial being said?

You don't really see them much unless you live in a heavily-contested state. Which means I never see them in Mississippi, not that I watch TV. You can keep up with the ads online, though.

Rachel Maddow just tweeted this article. Now we finally have a distinction to make for all those Obama-detractors who came out during Occupy. He no longer has a bank in the top five bundlers list.

Indiana got tea-party bombed with ads for the Lugar primary.

And it worked. You'd have thought the word "Obama" was the dirtiest word in the history of language watching tv and listening to radio. Lugar had to race to the right and got smoked. I actually thought about crossing over to vote Lugar but I couldn't stand there and lie and declare Republican.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

heh, yeah it's awkward, particularly in MS where the Dem table is the black people's table and the GOP table is the white people's table. They said, "Are you a Republican?" and I said, "Yes, I'm a registered Republican." But I still felt bad; I should have been an exception to the race rule, but for some god knows reason I wanted to vote for Ron Paul. I don't like him, and don't want him to win, but he made the GOP debates interesting this year. I mean, he had some of them cheering for drug legalization and pacifism.

I heard a PAC ad on the radio today for the real Senate race here. It was the Obama impersonator talking about how much he loved the Democrat's candidate and stuff.

It's not even June and the election is in November.

The amount of anonymous money spent is going to be absolutely ludicrous this election.

I'd love it if someone spent anonymous money to try to get Democrats elected in red states. Surely that's a worthy cause...

Shows that the conservatives/Republicans are worried about the tea-partier they just nominated here though. Indiana was locked-down for Lugar. No one even RAN against him in 2006.

If I didn't make it clear it was an extremely negative ad about the Democrat (and Obama of course).

I find it funny how hard Romney tries to stay on his talking points when all any reporter wants to ask him about is abortion and gay rights.

And how hard he tries to press the "obama is bad for the economy" and "obama makes too many government regulations" even though there is clear evidence to the contrary.

Looks like a "tell a lie enough times and it becomes true" is on its way from Romney's camp. This guy is going to get utterly devastated in debates...he has very few factual legs to stand on in arguing the president hasn't been doing his job.

I almost view the US elections as a giant countrywide referendum on abortion and gay rights at this point. Discourse is increasingly distant from anything but ideological issues...at least in mainstream media.

This isn't really partisan (though it certainly can be seen as political), mostly it's just kinda sweet:

Nothing spectacular there; the GOP argument is that it will prevent Democrats from voting dead people.

That was last time, this time it's "illegal aliens" -- you know, that huge voting bloc who conspicuously assert themselves at government events as often as possible. It's just coded language for minorities in general, Hispanics in particular, but this guy forgot his dog whistle. Even certified creeps like Rick Scott are more careful than this.

Really? Maybe it's because I'm from MS, but I'm accustomed to it. Dems are open about the fact that Voter ID benefits Republicans; Republicans are open about the fact that it will help them. We say 'dog whistle', they say 'fraud'.
