Because they own the means of limiting their power.

Amazingly, Trump continues to surprise me:
First we takeManhattan Greenland, then we take Berlin Canada!
Or to quote my other favorite Canadian singer:
(That's the Christmas spirit!)
But seriously... "an absolute necessity" for our "National Security" and "Freedom throughout the World"? And he's "100% serious"? Oh ffs... and Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, which is part of NATO. Would Trump really use Greenland as an excuse to join Putin in attacking NATO members? Maybe Trump would go first, then Putin would go in? He'd have to finish mostly purging the military---or at least military command---and installing enough loyalists and fascists in military and executive branch positions. And perhaps effectively end democracy. So he's probably got a towering pile of flaming shit on his plate to gnaw through before he gets to World War Free. But how quickly can he get through it?... his neo-fascist allies apparently already have detailed concrete plans for how to do it. OTOH Republicans in the House and the Senate did show some pushback over Trump's stated desire to eliminate the debt ceiling. We'll see how quickly he can crush their spines, or twist their backbones around his (very) little fingers...
Quote
"For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," the president-elect wrote [...] Sources close to the president-elect told the New York Post on Monday that he is "100% serious" about acquiring Greenland, as well as reasserting control over the Panama Canal Zone—an idea he also floated over the weekend, accusing the Central American nation of charging American ships "exorbitant" fees to use the passage.

Perhaps Trump will use Greenland as an excuse to impose tariffs on the EU and/or NATO nations? (Wonder whether the EU and NATO nations might then put pressure on Denmark to allow Trump generous access to Greenland---though annexation at this point in history does seem almost unthinkable and it seems extremely unlikely that the most economically powerful nations in the EU or NATO would press for that... granted I'm not sure about what the AfD, National Rally, or Brothers of Italy and other ascendant far right political groups might say about it---too much even for them? would Farage or his ilk ever advocate for the US annexing Greenland?).
Far-fetched as it seems, if Trump has the US armed forces seize Greenland in a sneak attack, will NATO go to war against the United States to get it back?
Perhaps Trump will start with Panama, then Greenland, then (coordinating with Putin and possibly China) Canada and/or Mexico (like a serial killer gradually working his way up to larger and larger victims... and after Canada, maybe Trump would like to avenge his deported grandfather by taking Germany... or maybe just Bavaria and letting Putin take care of the rest?)... by that time, perhaps with the aid of Musk &co, the US army may have enough semi-autonomous drones and other killer robots to not really need all that many Trump fascists. Like his favorite president, Andrew Jackson, Trump would at least displace, and possibly massacre, the indigenous people of Greenland who oppose expanded mining on their lands. He could have the robots do it in the dark. Mysterious fires in the night. Or spreading deadly bioweapons....
Trump could try to balance the budget the old-fashioned way: by forcibly plundering other countries, and/or forcing them to pay tribute. A student of history, eager to master it... and make Greatness (Might) Great (Right) again. But probably---hopefully---not.
Still... making preparations for defending Greenland might be sensible. If they're not too afraid of the consequences of NATO forces engaging militarily with US forces. A small team of special forces has casualties, maybe some get captured? Then Trump saying the United States needs vengeance, and those violent people around Greenland need to stopped permanently by the US taking control?

Let’s be honest: conquering and occupying a country is the work of decades. Greenland would be easier than Afghanistan or Iraq, but the timeline there is not take it today, integrate it tomorrow, exploit it the day after.
He wants access to Greenland and its resources and the access it offers to the resources in the Arctic Ocean. If NATO breaks up over this or he raises exhorting tariffs on NATO states (which this might be the pretext for), he is cutting his own fingers when it comes to curbing China’s global outreach.

He’s an idiot who can’t see past tomorrow and his advisors don’t care about tomorrow.
Who knows what will actually happen.
Who knows what will actually happen.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

With regards to the people of Greenland---since Trump only cares about resource extraction and control of sea routes, if he successfully purges the military and the executive of non-fascists and non-loyalists (likely prerequisites to invasion), Trump &co would be willing to indiscriminately massacre the population, or put them in slave labor camps, perhaps under AI supervision (and if the AI malfunctions and kills some, Trump &co won't care). Not sure how well prepared they'd be for guerrilla warfare against a US occupation, or where they'd continue to get the equipment for it (if they haven't been stockpiling weaponry and other supplies already).
In case anyone missed it,
Quote
Denmark's government announced a defense package for Greenland worth at least $1.5 billion [...] to buy two new inspection ships, two new long-range drones, and extra sled patrols in Greenland.
"It is ironic that it coincides with the announcement from the United States," Poulsen said, [implying] that the two events are not necessarily related and that the investment was previously planned.

If it were previously planned, presumably they'd have some proof of that?... The US military seems to have been devoting a lot of resources towards Arctic combat recently. And the Trump administration has called the Arctic "a top priority"....
In less awful news, it seems like Musk and Ramaswamy are finally facing the fact that Trump and the Republicans aren't going to let them cut anywhere near 2 trillion from the budget and now seem to be preemptively torpedoing their places in the Trump administration.
It's hilarious.
Ramaswamy:
Quote
Ramaswamy started an almost literal culture war as he prescribed early bed, science fairs[...]
"Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn't start in college, it starts YOUNG.
A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers."
Trump's DOGE Guy Sparks MAGA Civil War With Slam on American Culture

Trump's DOGE Guy Sparks MAGA Civil War With Slam on American Culture
... and of course the MAGA internet is throwing a huge fit (though Trump has yet to weigh in yet afaik), and a lot of the responses have been overtly racist and anti-Indian.
And then...
Elon Musk Agrees With Post That Calls Americans 'Retarded' Amid MAGA Civil War
Specifically, the post sums up the position of the "tech right" which supports H-1B Visas (this includes Musk) as saying they can't just hire Americans because "you can't outtrain being retarded", and Musk replies, "That pretty much sums it up." lol
And now:
Quote
Musk calls MAGA element "contemptible fools" as virtual civil war brews
Adams posted on X that MAGA was "taking a page from Democrats on how to lose elections while feeling good about themselves."
Musk agreed, and took it a step further.
"And those contemptible fools must be removed from the Republican Party, root and stem," he posted.

... MAGA is not taking it well. lol
Of course these are some of the rare issues on which I largely agree with Musk and Ramaswamy, though even I wouldn't put it so harshly (at least not in those terms---the "r word" is counterproductive (not to mention offensive to people with Downs syndrome---but who wouldn't take offense at being likened to Americans?), and IDK if "contempt" is really fruitful).

It seemed obvious that Trump would (at least publicly) side with MAGA over Musk and Ramaswamy, even though I'm pretty sure he secretly agrees with them and thinks that many of his MAGA supporters are stupid contemptible fools.
So what did he do?
Apparently he went with the money (and the righteous path, for once):

Pretty sure that's because it couldn't balance on only two legs. And are you talking lengthways, or across the middle?

I’m all for H1B visas but I think we shouldn’t increase them. If Trump and Musk think there aren’t enough skilled workers in the US why not make college more accessible?
