I think any hope of electoral reform is wildly optimistic, but by God is it needed

It angers and saddens me to hear on the news that electors in certain states will have body guards as they go to their respective state houses tomorrow (Monday) as the Electoral College meets to certify the election.

So how does this electoral college work today? Do they all have to meet somewhere or vote remotely? Is it just a formality?

For Michigan's electors: 'the state's 16 electoral delegates will gather in the Michigan Senate. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist and a few staffers will also be there, but no one else is allowed'

'Violent Threats Shut Down Michigan Legislature's Offices Ahead of Electoral College Meeting

"The decision was not made because of anticipated protests, but based on credible threats of violence."'

What happens if the electors get blown up?

They meet in person, but in one location per state. It's mostly a formality and it's usually not news. I don't even think it was news in 2000; that election was over once SCOTUS stopped the recount and I don't think anyone was expecting a huge number of faithless electors.

The President (2012) said:

Please proceed, Governor.

Chris Christie (2016) said:

There it is.

Elizabeth Warren (2020) said:

And no, I’m not talking about Donald Trump. I’m talking about Mayor Bloomberg.

'What happens if US presidential electors die or are otherwise incapacitated between being elected and casting their own votes?

[...] It depends on the state's law, but as a general rule, the elector is replaced by a new elector supporting the same candidates.

[... In some states] The governor may appoint a replacement... he's apparently not required to do so!'

https://politics.sta...apacitated-betw

'Pennsylvania state law provides that if any presidential elector is unavailable for the meeting of the electors, the electors present must choose by oral vote a person of the same political party as the absent elector to fill the vacancy.

[...]

In the event of a vacancy among presidential electors on the day they are scheduled to meet and cast their votes, Michigan state law allows for the presidential electors to fill the vacancy by electing a new elector through a plurality vote. Electors are legally obligated to vote for the candidate of the political party who nominated them. Doing otherwise constitutes a resignation and results in a vacancy.

[...] Wisconsin [...] if any elector is absent for any reason, the electors present must elect a substitute elector by a plurality of votes. Once all electors are present and any vacancies filled, they must then perform their duties.'

https://www.lawfareb...d-2020-election

Apparently no provision for what to do if no electors are present to vote on a replacement elector because they've all been killed.

Yes but this year you'd think everyone will be keeping an eye on things. I'd expect more faithless electors as well.

Electors are chosen along party lines. The people chosen are strong democrat or republicans loyalists. You might see a faithless elector vote for Bernie sanders ormsomething to make a point but a switch from Biden to trunk
Or vice versa would be unthinkable.

Also apparently the law now allows states to punish faithless electors

I mean, could in theory the college overturn the results?

Wonder if people will try to bribe electors, in addition to threatening to kill them.

After today, and the swearing in of Biden, do you guys think our institutions will be stronger for the stress test they survived? Do you think there will need to be significant work done to repair the damage? How long do you think that will take? First priority obviously is the pandemic, but how long do you think Biden's administration will need to get things anchored back to pre Trump state of affairs?

You would need a Republican presidency to show the way, not Biden's adminstration. So far it seems that the last 12 years have about obstructing the democrats. The Republicans need to find their own way otherwise you'll just get a repeat of Trump's presidency and now there's precedent for the lengths you're "allowed" to go to.

Trump was the trial run for the GoP, now they know they can do pretty much what ever the fuck they want, with someone remotely suave and charismatic, and I mean REMOTELY, they'll totally fuck what little shreds of democracy are left right out of America.
The use of left and right there is probably symbolic

I think several huge agencies are very weakened - the post office being the biggest one - in a way that can't be changed easily unless the Senate goes Democratic. DeJoy can't be replaced unless he leaves voluntarily or the board of governors for the Post Office (all Trump appointees) give the ok for that. It will take months or years for Biden to replace the board.

This kind of thing was meant to slow down the ability of a very corrupt administration to weaken or corrupt these entities. However, the Senate under McConnell has made it so that the rot seeps in and doesn't get out because quick action is functionally impossible.

So I foresee a lot of pain and a lot of fumbling to pin this on McConnell and get the Senate into a democratic majority. I'm not sure it'll happen either. Things are this bad and somehow Social Security strengthening and medical care for all are not being pushed as common sense things to do.

I left out the near collapse of Housing and Urban Development under Ben Carson and the Energy shady deals + coverups of studies.

I don't think I even have a great grasp of how bad it is for us as people and what the specific issues are - just that the people who really know about it are very worried that even with the best possible responses, we're in for some major shit.

Biden is going to speak tonight. I haven't kept abreast of Trump's twitter today. I imagine he is probably melting down. Anyone got more specifics?

Just had a very nice meeting with Attorney General Bill Barr at the White House. Our relationship has been a very good one, he has done an outstanding job! As per letter, Bill will be leaving just before Christmas to spend the holidays with his family...

...Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen, an outstanding person, will become Acting Attorney General. Highly respected Richard Donoghue will be taking over the duties of Deputy Attorney General. Thank you to all!

Also two of his usual tweets alleging election fraud.

WOW. This report shows massive fraud. Election changing result!'

His positivity today is creepier than a melt down... is he getting ready to appoint Giuliani Acting Attorney General to arrest the Bidens? (Hopefully that's far-fetched... hopefully.)
