Why don;t we just have a unspecified sign up hanging around? That way new people or old hands that may not live in the Mafia forum can sign up at leisure, and then when the current game is over, it;s waiting for the next mod.
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

I actually like that. Have the thread made and ready, but locked by Path-Shaper. The next person running the game opens the signup.

That would put "who is next" back in the Mafia Mod Thread where it belongs.*

If it's locked, random people won't be able to use it, and it will still be a mass rush from SH into the signup, so I don't think it will make much change

No, it ensures that it isn't opened until the path-shaper from the NEXT game opens it. Which means the game, and how many players, is already decided before sign-ups happen.

I realize this probably won't fly with most people, but seriously, 14 signups for the next game before I even reach spoiler heaven at the end of the current game is just dumb.

Again, it wasn't intended to be a sign up list. I mentioned I knew 9 people who wanted to play, and when people asked me for the list repeatedly I gave it.

Doesn't matter either way, D'rek said this game can have a ton of people.

You young people are so full of vigor.

I don't like to sign up for a new game right after i finish one, it's like reading books: there needs to be some time to digest (and analyse)

Anyways, I would be happy to join if there is still room. I'm also glad to leave my spot to someone who didn't play the last few, I can help co-mod if one is needed (GMT +2)

I don't see any reason to create a locked sign-up thread that only unlocks when sign ups open - it's easier to just not have the thread at all until the next mod creates one.

The process used to be that we figure out who is running the next game in the mod thread and then that person creates the sign-up thread as soon as they're ready and able. This is a good system because it makes it easy for the mod of the next game to give a description or set sign-up limitations or whatever in the sign-up thread because they created it. With something like this thread, even though I'm running the next game if I want to describe the game or get more slots added to the sign-up list I need to get Ment to do it.

And sign-ups shouldn't be done in SH because what if you think the current game is just about to end, so sign up for the next game, but then there's some kind of vote-night-and-guard stalemate that drags the current game out for another week, and now you have to withdraw from the next game because it will probably start a week later and go into your vacation but oh no the internet is down and you can't un-sign up and the game starts and you have to get modkilled all because the sign ups happened too early in SH?! WHAT THEN??!!!

There's room and I think I can run this one without a co-mod, so long as you guys don't mind waiting a couple hours for night resolution once or twice in the first few days, and only if you lynch at the worst possible time. I'll leave modding instructions in SH so dead people can help out, too.

I'm glad we elicited this conversation. I think that it would be great to have the mods do the sign up thread, however often none of us knows which game is up next until we have a player count. I do like the idea of a single thread dedicated to sign ups, punctuated by player lists for games built by someone who has a game ready or thinks they would like to be the next game, and locked in the meantime.

As for this signup spurt, it seems like no harm no foul, but I am still concerned about time zones. I think, perhaps, should a game list fill up within the first 24 hours and no one is willing to give up a spot (which in my experience rarely happens if ever), then randomize and pick from that entire 24 hour pool of people. Complicated but fair and only needed when we have a determined bunch of players.

Every since the PEN-plays-mafia revolution we haven`t had any problems getting numbers, even for large 20-person games. If there`s one absolutely enormous game, like 25+ people needed, then we can run an "if we get the numbers, this, if not, that" sign-up thread for it and the next game scheduled after it, but otherwise I don't think we'll have any trouble getting sufficient sign-ups for each game as it comes up in the list.

Figuring out whether to run the next full game or mini, or any other next-game decisions to be made can still be discussed before the current game ends so that the down time between is short.

It has been a couple of years since I last played a game of mafia and I would be interested to try my hand once again. It does not have to be the next game if this is oversubscribed.

I hope this won't turn anyone away from playing, but just so people have a heads up: This game is going to be balanced (town and scum starting numbers and abilities are equal in power), but not necessarily stable (things could go really downhill for either town or for scum very, very quickly). There's one big modification to the standard game mechanics, but it is still standard day-lynching and NAs. There will be a thorough explanation of the setup in the OP, nothing hidden, so it's not a CFUM game, but I suppose it is a little bit "experimental". There aren't any RIs, but it's not a TMDI 10 cluster-fest either.

The background, if anyone might be interested, is that at some point I was thinking up a Jaghut War on Death game, which turned into an Assail game, which got very complicated and so I then removed a bunch of elements from that and split what was left in two. Half the mechanics and all the themes became Espers (which is now no longer Assail/JWoD at all) and the other half of the mechanics became Ambience. "Ambience", the best synonym for "Modifiers" that I could find, will refer to variations on typical night actions - so for example if you were an Insane Finder, "Insane" would be the "Ambience" applied to the standard Finder role.
