It was indeed an interesting interview.
Thoughts:
Here, I feel that I cant be more direct because even while the novels are all sketched out and agreed between Steve and I, at this point in time with no contract in the offing to develop them, it is all too uncertain
I wonder how this works. Patch has already indicated that certain aspects were much more likely to to be dealt with by ICE than Erikson, for instance The Crimson Guard (a supreme favorite of mine). This has to bring up the question, "what if Esslemont doesn't get a contract" like Erikson has? This would mean that elements that would normally have been in the series proper are now not found at all. For instance, the seeds of the tale of the Crimson Guard have long since been planted in the Malazan books and are continuing to be developed as each book follows. Surely I can expect them to resolved within the 10 Malazan books as well right? Well, if I understand Patch and ICE correctly, maybe not. I find that disconcerting. Does this now mean that Erikson will start holding out on elements related to the CG (or of other ICE-invented concepts)in future books?
After all, by the time it turns out that ICE doesn't get a contract, it may well be too late to add the elements he was going to write about to the still to follow Malazan books by Erikson, crowded as they already are with hundreds of plotlines to be resolved in four more books (post-TBH).
Basically I'd like Erikson to use all the elements at his disposal so that he can follow up on all the intriguing characters and concepts that we have met sofar, instead of having to pick and choose from what he can and can't take because it may or may not be published later.
