Halfway into book Gaunt 6 and something struck me about the setting.
I don't know that much about the logistics of World War 1 but I'm somewhat certain that, that kind of intense artillery and trench warfare can't be sustained for 5 years, let alone forty years. Neither in terms of human or artillery resources is that realistic for that many years before everybody is dead or somebody capitulates.

There are trillions of humans. Quadrillions of Tyranids and Orks.
Almost all are funneled into the war efforts and centuries of battles can happen on a planet or around a certain spatial feature.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Yeah, but that's not the premise of this book. According to the backstory, the planet has been embroiled in its own world war, that the Imperial army has tried to stay out of until recently. Hence the antiquated, almost medieval war tactics. They don't get regular troop transports or resource drops. Which is why the army is in such a sorry state when the First arrive.
And of course I get that you can hand wave it all by saying "It's Warhammer" but that's not really an excuse for poor world building.

While it might actually be shoddy world building it's as easy as assuming that the conflict between france and germany from about napoleon to ww2 was a great war. From an outsiders perspective not that much difference, a few lulls, a few passages of economic warfare and more some intense passages in the war. The empire is also usually abysmally bad at controlling local stuff, trusting the locals until they stop paying tribute, send imperial regiments or something else that is obviously a big problem.

When the default for the Terran empire is of total war across an entire galaxy for thousands of years, a specific planet having its own internal war is meaningless to the empire as a whole. The "norm" for humanity in Warhammer 40k is to be at war and to prosecute the war by any means necessary, even if it means personal ruin.
It's not shoddy world building, it's something that has been half seriously and half satirically baked into the premise. There's a bunch of social commentary on the wars in reality, especially the British involved ones, in the Gaunt books and they're also treated seriously too.

Finished Gaunt book 6, Straight Silver.
I find it funny how the actual military campaigns seem less important than the small character situations. It's like TV- episodes in a long running show.
Not a particularly important story but entertaining.

So the explanation from an in-universe history book about why Gaunt didn't get promoted after Vervunhive . ugh SPOILER WARNING on Gaunt's future career.

EDIT: Tree wizards? Unleash the squirrels on them.
Regarding good Space Marine books for an introduction to Space Marines (I'm only putting the first book if it's a series or trilogy, no Horus Heresy stuff and sticking with stock Astartes not the more powerful Grey Knights or any Custodes):
Dante - character piece showing the history of the oldest space marine, not counting anyone spending time in stasis or the Eye of Terror. Guy is one of the noblest dudes in the setting
Helsreach
Calgar's Siege - Chapter Master Calgar and retinue lead the mortal defenders of a small world as they are besieged by orks
Warriors of Ultramar
Legacy of Dorn - squad of space Marines trapped behind enemy lines leads mortal soldiers in a guerrilla campaign vs orks
And Traitor Marines because why not:
Fabius Bile: Primogenitor
Storm of Iron
Soul Hunter
Lord of the Night
