Well, tbh, it was the fact that (from what I remember from the blurb)
-the protagonists are the farthest Northern Kingdom
-they guard the South and stand in the way of ancient horrors warrior race
-the father of the family is forced to go South and is embroiled in intrigue
-the fate of the land rests on his 4 (?) children
considering at the time i've just finshed Acacia (which also had 4 children), and prior to that I read another trilogy (also featuring 4 royal offspring), I just felt a bit annoyed. I think I made a thread about it at the time, too.
THe only Williams I've read was Otherland. Which was I loved, btw.

I added some comments in bold. The series is much more involved than you think, heck than most of use originally thought.

Unless Shadowmarch also involves some kids called the Starks, you're not talking about the same series; and if it does you're not helping the case that it's an aSoIaF ripoff any...

incidenally, I did read ASOIAF up to and including ADWD.
I was simply pointing out the blurb from the first Shadowmarch book.
the fact that you could transpose it onto AGOT framework so well just reinforces my point.

Rereading this thread has given me a creative urge. I now have a concept for a book/trilogy where a traditional farmboy hidden monarch started levelling up, and got stuck. But now his sequel is in the offing, he needs to get past that plateau before the shit really starts to hit the fan... Complete with wisecracking spunky female love interest cum mentor!

i think i saw that in a South Park episode. ... Cartman was cursed by an EQ player and starts farting dragons that look like Barbara Streisand and pretty soon the town is overrun and they kill Kenny and then Kyle and Stan have to armour up and hilarity ensues...

I'd like to read a traditional fantasy story where the dragons lay eggs that hatch an interim wazoo-hugger stage that actually implants a dragon egg inside the victimcubator's wazoo, and then when the egg hatches the dragon violently bursts OUT of the person's wazoo with blood and gore and stuff. A ship could maybe stumble on a dragon hatching ground and then one of the crew could be imwazoonated and then they leave but the dragon hatches and starts to stalk the crew one by one until only a tough yet plucky female crewmember and her cat are left in a lifeboat and the dragon is stalking her in her underwear although i can't really speculate about why the dragon is wearing her underwear......
