Eva episode 20... now that was trippy as fuck. You horny devil, Shinji. Greedy, maybe. And then being born from the unit core. Erm.

Muuuuch weirder than 13 year old me recalls.

Let the Spring 2015 season first episode round-up begin!

---

Re-Kan! [Pierrot] -- YMMV on this one, but I think it looks poor. The animation is pretty weird/bad I can't even watch it (the CG and hand-drawn don't blend well, the eyes-through-hair is in overkill mode and there's a bit of weird colour glossing/blending effect going on). Some of it was pretty funny but most of it I found pretty boring - not aided by the scene structure being fairly scatterbrained so it is more like a bunch of vignettes than an understandable plot. The general idea has some merit though - a really laid back girl-can-see-ghosts story - but the execution here is just not worth it, I think.

Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka (Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon) [JC Staff] -- Nope! It's pretty bad!!! With a name like that, I was hoping for some humourous dungeon crawler satire, but it looks like it's just a tropey fantasy harem romance, and not even a good one. Character designs are stupid, writing is non-sensical and there's nothing good that really stands out about it. The one interesting element was how video-gamey it was without actually linking itself to game mechanics a la Sword Art Online or Log Horizon... there is probably a very interesting show buried in there, or at least the potential for one, but I don't think this is it.

Shokugeki no Souma (Food Wars?) [JC Staff] -- This is a cooking show where the protagonist goes to a Hell's Kitchen-esque elite culinary college, and also everyone who eats the amazing food has literal foodgasms in full-on Ecchi style. First episode was fun and had me laughing, but I think the foodgasms might be a bit too much for me so I might not stick with it.

Vampire Holmes [???] -- Wow, this is bad. The animation is bad, the jokes are lame, even the subtles are bad! Apparently, no one knows who the studio or subtitlers even are, and this is based on a smartphone game, so it's possible this is literally being done by people who have never actually made a show before... that would explain a lot. Anyways, it's a short-form series - the episodes are only about 3 minutes long - so you won't lose much time if you just watch to go laugh at it.

Owari no Seraph (Seraph of the End) [Wit] -- Looks great, sounds great, and the plot is very engrossing. This is definitely looking to be a strong successor to Attack on Titan (which was also made by Studio Wit). Not a lot of action in this episode, it's more of a dark intro/prologue, and from the preview of episode 2 I think there's a lot more worldbuilding to setup, but nevertheless looks very promising already.

Gunslinger Stratos [A-1] -- Should've just called it "Action-packed mindfucks, the anime". This one is off to a good start! I think it was even enhanced by me not knowing anything about it beforehand - made the surprises extra surprising! I recommend doing the same!

Plastic Memories [Dogakobo] -- Should've just called it "You will cry like a baby, the anime". Oh god the feels. (It's about a guy who joins a team of people that shut down ultra-realistic androids before they start to degrade from being alive too long. Going to be some comedy and romance elements, too.)

---

Whew! 7 down, 21 on my list more to go! Good thing it's a long weekend!

Ok so the brethren came by and left two helpings of anime for me to consume.

Akame Ga Kill

and Tokyo Ghoul season 2 complete.

Akame Ga Kill was not at all what I expected. remember Elfen Lied? yah this gives that show a run for its money. The off putting part of it all is how likable each and every character seems despite nearly 80% of them being very very wrong in the head. I have not watched something like this in a long time. Theres a point to making us feel like crap everytime anyone dies, good or bad (highly relative term in the series) I have yet to figure out the main moral to the narrative but I think its not so much about the plot as much as the execution (pardon the pun) of the plot that gets to you. If you havent watched it and have a yearning for pure WTF? this is the show for you.

Also did I mention its pretty damn funny? the emotional compass of this show could be summed up by this image:

I've harped on about Tokyo Ghoul already. suffice to say if anyone is looking for morbid high octane action and thrills this is the show for you. I like the divergence from the manga quite a bit. the manga still owns the show big time but Its always good to watch the more epic parts of the Narrative play out.

@ D'rek

Owari No Seraph, Decided to stop reading the Manga so I can enjoy the show. the brethren say it was a really good debut. ;)

i personally don't get the apeal of tokyo ghoul. It was an ok anime but i didn't see anything special. Then season 2 came out and much of s2 is basically advertising for the manga. There's a lot that goes on that isn't explained or hinted at.

s2 spoiler

Spoiler

also durarara finale was brilliant. It was a thrill ride all the way through. Also glad to see ryugamine is evolving as a character.

Admittedly to get it all the manga is a necessity. Personally I recommend a read before the watch. A lot of the explanations make sense in the sequence the manga presents it. There's a definite pacing issue with Tokyo Ghoul S2 even though they hit the more epic fights/reveals/events, they don't have as much weight as they do in the manga. It feels rushed. Had they followed the manga format I have no doubt this show would be ranked up there with AoT and Fate.

So much meaningful content has been left out. none of the relationships are explored fully and I will admit at times its annoying how much better this show could be.

Onto Alter Memory. Initial impressions are good - if people don't know the game it's an adaptation of, the storyline will seem very confusing at this point. Characters are pretty faithful, bar Jin seeming to have lost the belligerent sexual attraction towards his brother (although we did get the obligatory NII-SAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!). Will fill in with more thoughts as I get further into it.

I don't know about blackened bodily fluids, but it does have the main character chasing pixelated hallucinations into a giant marshmallow vat that is really a/the moon.

...uh, that made a lot more sense in the show than it does when I write it out like that, ok? ;)

I couldn't get into Akame Go Kill at all. I saw the first two episodes and other than the dark twist in the first episode didn't find anything I liked. The members of the assassin gang seemed like just caricatures (and several of them cringe-inducingly oversexualized for no reason), the explanation of what they're trying to accomplish didn't really make any sense and the fighting was just "shout at each other, swing once, lock swords, shout at each other some more, off-camera sword break, person now has a hole in their torso" which is pretty much just one step up from "black screen with swipe effect, person dies".

Don't bother with Akame Go Kill if you want anything with subtlety or a coherent story. I read a good chunk of the manga and it's facepalm bad at least 3x a chapter. Not surprised the show isn't better at all.

I am familiar with the term, not that I realized that was what you were referring to. But why is it blackened???! In any case, doesn't that fit perfectly with a marshmallow vat then?

It's black because, as Danny (what's his forum handle?) would say, "it's Inchoroi time!".

Artificially created beings in R. Scott Bakker's Second Apocalypse series have blackened bodily fluids and fused-to-their-neighbors teeth. They mostly are the "orcs", "balrogs" and upwards of that universe.

It's sort of a purposely-done-by-the-author joke how often the bodily fluids part appears, which is why Maark has been talking about it in multiple threads. And it is memorable.

A marshmallow moon vat can't be any weirder than a girl turning into something as big as the moon whilst she runs around and Tangs everyone. It just can't be.

It amuses me that Gintama°, which has yet to air even its first episode, is currently ranked 11th out of all anime on MAL. Sure, that makes sense. Meanwhile, Fate/Stay Night/UBW cour #2, which has aired only one episode, is in 25th. It's the hypothetical hype wars!

I wonder if there's some way to view the ratings list with a filter so, like, only scores from people who have reported watching all the episodes of a show are counted?

Perhaps so. I'm very much the new guy at this so I'll just nod and do what you tell me*.

AM ep 4: So the full intro sequence comes in with this one. I was expecting Tager to be a bit more... Erm, well, Tager-ish. Let's hope that when he finally shows up he's still eight foot tall and looking like he ate Arnie as a protein snack.

*Sorry D'rek, I would do anything for love, but I won't do that.
