Can I get some recommendations of some anime which focus, or feature heavily on sword-fighting? I mean sword-fighting which is a touch realistic not those doorposts that pass for swords in Final Fantasy. To put it in context i really loved Rurouni Kenshin, or as the dub goes "Samurai X" . It can be set in any time: history, fantasy, present day etc. just not those big ass swords which are just eyesores

If You don't have it in you to watch the original EVANGELION the series (24 eps), then do up DEATH & REBIRTH movie (which is the whole series boiled down into a two hour recap) and then END OF EVANGELION which rejigs the TV series ending (and is awesome). AFTER that (you should at least watch the two previously mentioned movies) you could go and watch the new EVANGELION REDUX films (EVANGELION 1.1, 2.2, and 3.3 [the 4th and final film 4.4 is not out yet even in Japan]) which are excellent and have updated animatuon and new characters...but the reason I tell you to try to watch the first movies from the late 90's first is that the theory is that the new ones are a sequel...trust me, you'll see.

But yeah if you want to skip the original series, DEATH & REBIRTH and END OF EVA will set you up for the new movies.

It should be noted that EVANGELION is my all time fave anime ever. It's mind melting, emptional, psychological, and everything else under the sun.

Avoid Akame ga kil. The plot and the world is just a mess that exists only allow fight to take place. Which would be cool but every episode someone has a random new weapon etc. There is no growth in the skills or advancement in their characters.

Andorion, do you mean that the show is actually *about* sword-fighting, ie the characters talk about it and have to learn it/hone their skills/etc? Or simply shows that have lots of good/realisticish sword-fighting choreography?

Most/All of Hust's suggestions I would say are the latter category.

Umm I would say the latter category. The first one would be cool too, but isn't that kind of thing rare? Anyway I like my anime action packed.

This is a very impressive list. You guys are awesome!

Has anyone seen a rather old anime called Escaflowne?

Okay, in that case I'd definitely also recommend Samurai Champloo. I don't think the show is much more than okay overall (it's almost enitrely episodic, and I find it drags a lot after a while), but there is definitely a lot of swordplay in almost every episode.

Sword of the Stranger should get a mention if you're ok with a movie. It probably has better sword fights than most shows, especially if you're leaning towards the more realistic end of the scale...

Andorian you might like:

Ninja Scrolls
, though its actually had several interpretations, and some were...not so great, I'd call this anime the best fit for what you're looking for.

Jubei as a character is fun to watch and he has a good mystery about him. Some of the fight scenes were very good viewing.

Basilisk had some hecticly epic moments in it though the plot was filled with weirdness. I'd advize you take it with a pinch of salt.

Samurai Champloo is great to watch. As said above its not driven by story as much it is by character.

Sengoku Basara had TONS of sword fights, not realistic but if you liked Bleach its on that type of scale.

Rurouni Kenshin...Watch the animated movie. Do it for the feels.

and then there's Gintama. I love it to bits but its too damn long, I haven't managed to keep up with it. In between the epically funny comic sketches they've had some INCREDIBLE sword fights.but these are peppered in at odd intervals. I'd not say you watch it for the fights or action, watch it more for the humor with the fight scenes added in as a REALLY good bonus.

Theres more I can come up with but I'd have to go through my collection to be sure. A few others above already highlighted Claymore and Berserk as ideal Seinen anime.

Lol Yes, because the horn is a metaphor for his...Horn. Metaphor gets a bit fuzzy towards the ending but I think I get where you're coming from. Am I the only one that found it too brief?

I think it needed to be that brief. The plot basically being a ton of metaphors tied together with insanity only works for so long.

I Love both of these. When I explain the two "biggest personalities" I talk about "Railtracer" and "Saika". Both are really extreme and kind of terrifying. Despite this You cant help root for them and their twisted agenda because at the heart of it all we all want Railtracers ridiculous self confidence and Saikas ridiculous self control. and these two just represent a fraction of the interest both casts have to offer. Good Seinen and personal favourites of mine aswell, more Durrara than Baccano plot-wise.

I didn't really like all the Railtracer lead-up that much, but I did like Vino a lot once he was on-screen. Sometimes you want to root for him and sometimes you just can't stand his insanity.

Saika is awesome. I was totally blown away the first time
Spoiler

Didn't see that coming at all, and it was thoroughly awesome.

Have yet to watch Mirai Nekki. Not sure if anyone else reccomends it?

Not sure if anyone else has watched it... maybe QT?

Biggest problem with it is that the main character is pretty wimpy, doesn't take much initiative (well, eventually he figures his shit out but it takes a while). Still, the show starts out so tropey but has some really surprising twists that go way outside the usual formula. It's also kinda perverted... and definitely R-rated.

... Requiem for the Phantom...which has nothing to do with Zankyou and you'll not mention them together ever again, thank you very much...(from now on I think I'm just going to stop acknowledging the plot of ZnT beyond episode 4 or so...)

There's so few shows that I would rate around a 5 (or lower) that I actually watch all the way through, though. It's nice having something other than 7s and up in my Completed list, makes it look a bit more balanced!

Haha, at least it has that upside. XD

I think what bugs me though is that it was looking like a 8/9 at the start. Then we end up with a 5 or so...because the second half of the show drags it down that much. If they'd just stuck with the original, well-researched, morally ambiguous atmosphere, with plenty of room for plot expansion and cat-and-mouse showdowns, it could have been anime of the year. *sigh*

Durarara and Baccano are truly some of the best anime out there, for sure.

From the Railtracer to Firo, Ennis, and Isaac and Miria, and of course, Ronny, Baccano has an awesome cast, and a really neat, self-contained plot that is all the better for being told a bit anachronistically. And dat opening theme...XD one of the few anime I prefer in dub.

Durarara has possibly an even more amazing cast, even if the vast majority of them are less...endearing/openly insane than the characters in Baccano. Izaya Orihara will forever be a name that makes me wear an evil grin, and start quoting some lines (mostly maniacal laughter while making stomping motions...), while Shizuo Heiwajima just makes me think of ridiculous over-the-top violence.
The 'leads' aren't as good but the world they inhabit is every bit as magnificent as the one in Baccano (well, same world, actually) and the background characters are just phenomenal.

...I also suspect that when we get more of those characters in season two as the focus shifts, my head is going to asplode with joy. XD
Baccano really has the better plot, and it's told much more efficiently, but I think I prefer Durarara for its subtler, and less constantly random approach. Plus there are a couple of really stand out characters whose only real competition is Vino, in terms of awesomeness.

Wow. That got longer than I planned. XD

Well, well, well

Death Parade (new, episode 1) - I found from the Anilinkz comments that MadHouse actually made a one-off episode called Death Billiards a while back, and Death Parade is being made since it got favourable reception. So Death Billiards is sort of like episode 0 of Death Parade, now. I went and watched both. They sort of both covered the same ground, which is to be expected since MadHouse can't assume everyone watching Death Parade would have seen Death Billiards. But both were really good and I liked the multiple twists in plot and morality. Based on the next-episode preview, Death Parade looks like it might not at all be purgatory-of-the-week episodic but instead delve into the world of the Arbiter and his staff quite a bit beyond the surface (though I would totally be okay with it being fairly episodic and I am sooo on board for bet-your-life air hockey and DDR!). Looks promising, I am intrigued so far.

Demon mask = Void = Hell right? They are kind of mixing Abrahmic Heaven/Hell with Buddhist Void/Reincarnation, no?

That OP sooo doesn't fit with the rest of the show, but it is so amazing I have no problem with it at all!!!

New desktop background! (image)
Spoiler

Durarara!! x2 (new season, episode 1) - It's pretty amazing how well they captured the exact same tone, feeling, etc of Ikebukuro and its cast right off the get go here. This barely felt like the start of a new season at all, it felt like just continuing from the last season with more episodes. Especially impressive since the first season was so long ago. And all of that ties into this episode's theme of things in Ikebukuro not really having changed... but with hints that they soon will. I like!

I watched the first season mostly in the English dub though, and some of the voices were jarringly different... especially Erika and Walker sounding so much more adult with deeper voices in the Japanese audio. Oh well, I'll get used to it eventually.

Apparently season 2 is actually going to be 3 cours long, rather than 2, so 38 or so episodes total! Awesome! They'll alternate seasons on/off so it should be:

Durarara!! x2 Shou - Winter 2015
Durarara!! x2 Ten - Summer 2015
Durarara!! x2 Ketsu - Winter 2016

Assassination Classroom (new, episode 1) - Might not be for everyone but I found this hilarious and even a little bit touching. Too early to call - I could see this doing a lot of great character studies as well as hilarious comedy all cour-long and be the anime of the season!

(image, not a spoiler)
Spoiler

Log Horizon (continuing, episode 14 s2) - Can we forget about this Japan business and just stay with Kanami and Ninja-Turtle for the rest of the season? How did they cram so much world-building (cross-server interactions, boss monsters that are more like players than other monsters, NPC-meta-exploration) and cool ideas (bots-turned-sentient-player, Ninja Turtles!!!) into this one episode after running in place the whole first half of the season?

Rolling Girls (new, episode 1) - I... I have no idea... what even is this? What did I just watch? I can't tell if it is brilliant, insane, horrible or all 3?!
