After joining this thread 60 pages late from its first post, i will join the discussion merely by suggesting you watch Big-O. Sorry if somebody else has beat me here but I think might like that as a 'western-ish' style Anime. Think Batman with a mech and not a black spandex/leather/rubber/carbon fiber suit and you will hit pretty close to Big O. I think it is stylish, a little dark and moody and damn fun to watch.

Next I would suggest Evangelion, its so awesome, I think that the Pacific Rim creator basically watched it and thought 'man thats cool, lets rip the idea off and make a blockbuster movie.' It is Huge mechs fighting huge monsters trying to destroy the world, really fun to watch. I have only watched the newer ones that are on Blu Ray though, 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone, 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance and the third is out soon dubbed in English and that is called 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo.

I am not a huge Anime nut as I have only watched the ones my mates suggested, the above, along with Hellsing (the new ones that take about 3 years per episode to release lol), Trigun which is epic fun, story is immense and at times tragic, it also has a fantastic sense of humour. My personal favourite, Gungrave, that is damn good Anime! great story to that too in my opinion, awesome fight scenes etc you should probably read a synopsis of these to form your own opinion. Last but not least of the limited Anime I have seen is Full Metal Panic. I think this one is closest to the typical Anime, what with random school girls wearing silly outfits left right and centre, l**bian scenes scattered about etc. Not that this should put you off as the story is awesome if you can look past some of the cliches, this is another big mech anime but damn, its good!

I think you also miss the point of anime a little with not liking them because of the silly hair cuts etc (I only read the first post by the OP so I am by no means well informed on if you now like anime or hate it still :-P) I think the point of anime and JRPGs (which I think are in the same league of silly but awesome) is that they are fantastic and so allow easy escape of the drudgery of reality (which makes me sound depressed but I am not haha) I think the crazy hair and silly oversized b**bs on a size 4 frame etc are easy ways to throw you straight into the make believe and give a fast escape into the world you are watching or playing. Just think, if you didn't watch or play something because crazy hair made you think 'o crap another anime or JRPG i wont like' (just my bro does) then you have never entered the world of Final Fantasy, which means you haven't lived, at all! haha :-P

Anyways hope some of what rubbish I have just chatted can contribute to discussion and hopefully you may like some of my limited suggestions! Look forward to further discussion and some suggestions on epic anime for me to get stuck in to! :harhar:

based off what you've written, it appears you haven't seen cowboy bebop. You definitely should.

...I may or may not respond to the rest of your post at some point in the future (trust me, I'm the most prolific poster in this thread for a *reason* - I LOVE anime now XD I still tend to prefer my anime to be less "anime" and more "sensible" on the whole, but I get just as much fun out of the more ridiculous shows I like as the ones which are basically not-like-stereotypical-Western-view-of-anime-at-all, it's been great broadening my horizons! :harhar:) but in the meantime, I'm just going to quote this bit and wait for QuickTidal to notice it, and react. *whistles innocently*

Indeed. Here I go.

Giant Robots fighting giant monsters does not equal Eva

Giant Robots using the souls of dead people being linked with young teens who pilot them to fight a succession of Angels to prevent the destruction of humanity, while other forces work undercover to evolve humanity in a similarly destructive way, full of philosophy and apocryphal religious connotations (and that is merely scratching the surface) DOES equal Eva.

PACIFIC RIM is probably much more in line with Del Toro having grown up with Godzilla films and early giant Robot anime (Gundam, Patlabor, Voltron, Robotech ect.) than it ever would Eva.

:p :p :p

EDIT: I understand the sentiment though, as I'd like nothing better than to see a Live Action Eva film done right. And early PR trailers did give me vibes of Eva with the giant robots.

My reaction after seeing EVANGELION 3.0 for the first time:

WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED?!

Seriously the disorientation going on is heavy.

Excellent film...but damn what is going on?! I'm more confused now than ever!

SO i loved evangelion. Animation was great, voice acting was top quality (asuka always had a place in my heart for some reason), pacing was great but the best part of the movie was Kaoru. More or less everything Kaoru said to shinji had me laughing, (my head is stuck in the gutter).

ALso i don't think it was that confused, but that's likely cause i've read soo much about eva that i actually get it.

I think I was largely thrown by the time jump and the split off of WILLE from NERV and such...it's a great thing, don't get me wrong, but now I haven't the foggiest clue how Anno will end it...will Shinji still make the same choice?

But yeah, Asuka has always been my fave, and in this she was no exception.

I juts need another viewing to let it all sink in.

and yeah, the scenes with Kaworu and Shinji were hilarious! Also, significance of the tree by the piano?

Oh, and lastly one thing that makes zero sense and makes me wonder about things in general...Sakura Suzuhara...Toji's sister....wasn't she on deaths door or something? Even Shinji remarks "that's not possible" when she explains she's Toji's sister...are we just meant to assume she got better?

anyways, GREAT film...but yeah I needed some time to let it sink in. :p

In original anime Nerv gave her treatment in exchange for touji joining Nerv. It's likely something similar happened in this timeline. Again a lot can happen in 14 years. I didn't notice the tree, i just noticed how phallic like the piano looked in that very first scene where shinji sees kaoru playing the piano. Funny enough it was only the white people who were laughing at those scenes. All the asians didn't laugh at all. They were likely going (wtf is wrong with these white people)

So, continuing my love affair with all things Studio SHAFT - Puella Magi Madoka Magica is possibly the best thing since sliced bread.

Alright, I'm only one episode in, and it's not *that* good, but I get the feeling it's going to become phenomenal. Magical girls...deconstructed Evangelion style...with SHAFT animating, with their top director at the helm? Shit's going to be so fucking good.

This originally aired in what is technically the Winter 2011 season, so I appreciate I'm slightly behind the trend here, but for those who 1) like SHAFT (who doesn't?) and 2) want something which mucks around with the typical magical girl story to make it...uhm...darker, this is probably 100% on the mark. Will report back when more episodes have been mainlined consumed watched.

As one comment somewhere put it:

"Just another Magical Girl show, they said.
Going to be boring. They said."

Lol.

So in the new season i've been watching
mahou sensou
nobunaga the fool

and from last season
kill la kill
log horizon

so for the new pick ups, they are ok, time will tell if they go anywhere but nobunaga the fool has potential. It's also something a history buff would enjoy. KlK is still awesome, log horizon keeps getting better
also i just finished rewatching code geass and and now 2/3 done code geass season 2.

@silencer, glad you're finally watching it. Madoka was definitely one of the top shows of 2011

I watched the first one... this is like Sailor Moon on LSD. Freaky... I'm not sure if I'll watch more or not.

I also saw the first Nobunaga the Fool. Giant robot samurai sengoku plus Leonardo da Vinci? Weeeeird, but intriguing enough so far I'll keep watching.

that famed *chomp* scene eh? glad you enjoyed it.

Also newest episode of noragami was rather interesting, for several reasons. But I get the feeling only this bunch will truly appreciate this one.

"people's wishes are what lets Gods exist. Distinguished Gods enjoy constant worship and wishes, Not so for obscure Gods. They can't even remain in people's memories. So what do you do to keep from being forgotten? You grant any wish you get... no matter whose it is."

It's so malazan!!!!! i LOVE IT!!!!!!

Ultimate Muscle - whichever is the later version of it that appeared on Fox in the US when I was a kid. It's completely based in pro wrestling, which is fake, rigged and scripted like bad bad soap operas, but the show itself is wildly entertaining and self-aware. It's a guilty pleasure because I detest pro wrestling for sullying the reputation of real combat sports and will actively go out of my way to sour people's enjoyment of pro wrestling.

Your mileage may vary.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

One does not simply disagree with Miyazaki-sama.

More seriously, though, I think he's probably got a pretty good point. That isn't necessarily all bad, however, as there is definitely room for that sort of inwards-facing, otaku-catering kind of series, but if it's too widespread then it does, obviously, tend to stagnate the industry and remove some of the alternative types of production.

That being said, Miyazaki is, I think, approaching this from one perspective. That is, he produces phenomenal, human-based anime movies, which are pretty much all near the top of the class in terms of impact, story, characters, etc. That, though, is just one kind of movie. If all anime were like his, most of it would not do as well as it does, I think, because not that many people would be anywhere near as good at it.
Instead we have to consider that there are other approaches to be taken. It may not result in the same level of achievement, but there's nothing wrong with that if you're not aiming for the same thing from the outset. Some of the funniest, most endearing series have been produced based on a raft of in-jokes and meta-references, which cater specifically to someone who has seen a lot of series.

And that's ignoring the fact that while Miyazaki is making a good point, he's not talking about *everyone*. It takes all kinds. And I think a mix is probably good, both in terms of creators and creations, rather than just having all one type. I certainly think that being passionate about what you are creating - as a medium, as a concept - isn't a bad thing itself. *shrug*

Someone recommended Steins;gate to me last night and I'm currently 10 episodes in. I have no idea what's going on, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it regardless.

EDIT: Also, re: Miyazaki, that animenewsnetwork.com story says that Miyazaki is a "recent retiree." However, he announced on New Year's Eve that he's unretiring.
