SO the new season has started and let's say it's a pretty packed one. I'll go over what I've picked up so far.

Misfit of Demon Academy S2: >:) the sequel. Standard OP protag power fantasy, but I always quite liked Anus Foldagoat.
Nagatoro S2: More of the same, fun enough.
Bofuri S2: see above
InSpectre S2: see above
DanMachi S4: see above
Tomo-chan: could be fun. A lot of my weeb friends rate the 4koma.
Tenshi-sama: could be a decent romcom. Ep1 was fine.
Saving 80k gold coins: interesting flip on the isekai formula. We'll see if it remains so.
Farmer isekai: it's a trash isekai of COURSE I'm watching it I'm a slut for those.
Demon King's Brother 30s something or other: basically every 'kicked out of the hero's party' anime but his brother ISN'T THE HERO, shocker
Genius Girl & Magic Princess: almost the exact premise as last season's villainess show, but ep1 was pretty fun.
Beasts of Ars: first ep was aight, has promise

There's 10-12 other shows I've not had chance to look at yet. Vinland Saga S2 is probably gonna be THE big show this season, and the rest time fillers - but we'll see if anything unexpectedly turns out to be great, like Bocchi and Akiba Maid War last season.

I've seen Spy School which seems like some kind of hybrid of Lycoris and PrinPrin, not sure if I've seen the ninja school one.

I found the name, it is Ayakashi Triangle. It looks pretty bad... like, the reincarnated as a dog softcore porn show looks better by comparison.

I watched the first couple episodes of Endo And Kobayashi Live hoping for an interesting romance but so far I'm not much of a fan, the setting is 100% generic and the dialogue is pretty boring. So I might drop it and watch Bofuri S2 instead, as that should at least be guaranteed to be fun.

Oh I saw the first episode of Ayakashi, it didn't give a particular school vibe off to me.

Bofuri is literally just more Bofuri, if you enjoyed S1 then you'll like S2.

First couple of episodes of Vinland have been good.

Picked up Ice Man and his Cool Female Colleague. Despite the hilariously cringe name it seems to be a reasonably decent office romance story concerning a yuki-onna's child and his taciturn co-worker.

I ended up watching the first three episodes of "Saving 80,000 gold". It's a bit all over the place, and some of it is not very good, but some of the jokes are good and the out-of-nowhere emotional scene at the end of episode 3 actually hit me like a truck. :crybaby:

It's a nice riff on the basic isekai premise for sure.

Sort related: CampfireCooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill - vaguely similar premise, except MC's aforementioned skill is to be able to order groceries from the human world via the internet. Mostly a comfy dumb time.

Just here to add handy-man saitou in another world is pretty ok. Should have been better than it is. there's alot in there I really like but the story is like a chicken in traffic.

also thanks for the line up summary. Tomo Chan is pretty good. Vinland Saga is amazing.

Big Covid spike in China seems to be the biggest culprit, from what I've read.

So, don't know where to discuss this so i'm just going to strike up the topic here...

I've been reading a lot of manga rather than anime. Mostly because I like to learn from the panels and if pressed for time between anime and manga I tend to lean towards the manga as I get the story in compressed form and I like the feel of the b&w art so much.

That said, quite a few standout manga are getting anime adaptations and at the top of that list is Solo leveling which isn't even a manga but the korean equivalent, a Manhwa.

Its amazing. Its masterfully drawn and its pure high octane spectacle on the same scale as One Punch Man.

I think its going to be fantastic but theres a bit of a trip up debate. Its reportedly going to lean heavily on AI and/or CGI. Alot of experimental digital tricks are being used to fast track it.

The CGI in anime debate has been a major issue in my end of the world. We really enjoy its use in some anime and absolutely hate it in others. I personally believe Chainsaw man could have been better served by a non CGI format for some of the devils but what they did do with CGI was actually really artful in its own right. Similarly the recent attack on titan episodes have managed to seamlessly integrate CGI with handrawn animation. Its been good, we've been blessed...but Berserk and even some JoJos episodes have been...rough.

So i guess my question is this, do you feel CGI is at a level its worth the loss of careful cell shaded handrawn artwork? Would you feel less hype for an anime like Solo Leveling in full CGI? Is it better to wait an extra year or so for something a little more integrated?

Really interested to hear thoughts on this from you guys. Apologies if its a rehash of an older discussion and I missed it. I have been MIA on here and thats my bad.

I would say that it depends on how it's done, if that makes sense?

Like Cell-shaded 3D (like THE DRAGON PRINCE on Netflix [not anime]) is lovely and fun to watch if it's got a good framerate.

Regular CGI/3D anime is a different beast, and my most recent experience with it is something like BLADE RUNNER BLACK LOTUS (which I've only just started watching on CR) where at first glance it ALMOST looks like video game cutscenes from the 2000's and cheap and bad....but the longer you watch the more you realize that it's a really stylistic choice that allows for a depth of field and design that regular 2D animated simply can't. I can see why people might be put off by it, but the more Iw watch the more I'm enjoying it....and the action sequences are REALLY kinetic in CGI/3D animation.

For another example, there's a Korean animated show my son watches called MINFORCE: SUPER DINO POWER on Netflix, and I quite like the animation in it and it's very much CGI/3D, but it's bright (almost garishly so) and airy and smooth. Now, this is not the best example as it's VERY much aimed at a young kid demographic, but aside from some hinky mouth animations, everything looks crystal clear on it.

Quote

Here's my take beyond the above statements, a BIG part of CGI/3D animation is the money spent on detail and the story...like at the movie level, no question that's the best style of animation (most recently Disney's STRANGE WORLD is EXCELLENT in that regard)....but at a TV level you gotta deal with budget, and if the budget is really low you'll be able to tell. But if a small SK company can kick out something like MINIFORCE for 3-5 year olds and have it look that good, then the barrier to good may be not as high as one thinks....but you gotta have a team devoted to delivering great animation....and some of these teams are VERY overworked, so you never know.

For what it's worth SOLO LEVELING looks like it could lend very well to cel-shaded CGI/3D animation.

See, I'd consider attack on titan to be a great example of how the majority of CGI in anime is bad, because it's so obvious how much worse it got.

There's a scene in the first season where the lady titan gets its arm ripped off and the arm goes bouncing through the street, blood splattering all over, and winds up gripping a bridge or building or something - all on camera, all looking stylish and detailed. Then there's a scene in the latest season where once again the same titan has its arm blown off and... well they don't show it actually being detached, the camera just awkwardly zooms in on her so you only see her from, like, the neck down, and the arm just falls from the top of the screen to the bottom.

It's absolutely clear that they either don't have the technology or don't have the skills to make the 3D titan models move and change the way they did in 2D earlier on. When the Attack Titan and the Hammer Titan fight and the AT gets a giant spike shoved into him, it's clearly just one solid model with the spike a fixed part of it (no wonder they never showed clearly the spike actually piercing him) and as he moves around while getting shot by a bajillion cannons the model stays exactly the same, they just draw little red splotch effects on the screen that don't actually stay on the model.

They're constantly covering the screen in explosions and other effects to hide how little the 3D models can actually do, and they'd probably get away with it in a series that started that way because it wouldn't be so obvious just how much it changed.

On the other hand, as QT points out it's not necessarily even a case of 3D vs 2D and it can be that the 3D CGI is just bad because they don't have the time/budget they need to make it good. WiT stopped wanting to make attack on titan for a reason, after all, and every season it seems like MAPPA is going through yet another production hell.

Even so, the only 3D CGI in anime that I feel has come even close to acceptable has been some of the bigger movies like the Lupin movie, and even that I don't feel has really quite captured the feel of still being an anime (rather than looking like a non-anime 3D movie). There's plenty of good 3D animation out there, but none of them have actually felt like "anime" to me even if they're made in Japan by "anime" studios. The good ones are too visually/stylistically different, and the ones that are trying to mimic a more typical anime style (like Kotobuki for example) have really bad CGI.

And those are ALL-3D CGI shows/movies. The stuff where they try to use 3D models inside an otherwise-2D show, like attack on titan, have all been a huge annoyance/disappointment for me. They never manage to make it blend in with the 2D parts seamlessly, and every single time I find myself thinking the 3D animation itself is just worse than what I've seen done in similar all-2D shows.

You know i never actually made that comparison before. Your pointing it out makes the difference very clear.

I think I'm more forgiving of it as i've been watching alot of bad cgi anime and i guess Mappas handling of CGI in comparison felt alot less jarring. The quality drop is definately there. Its almost as hard to ignore ad S1 vs S2 of One Punch man. I still enjoy OPM S2 but it pales in comparison.

So i guess Solo Leveling might be doing the right thing here and starting us off with a heavy 3D setup?

I know it would be great to watch in 2d animation but like QT says the shows that fully commit to 3d quality and style may actually feel alot better than the mix n match approach we got in AOT and OPM.

I actually really like the dragon prince. I even had a good time with the netflix pacific rim adaptation largely because i bought in early on the approach and by the 3rd episode had my focus solely on the story. It fell of the rails a few times but pacific rim always demands a bit of grace...
