all right, you lot have dragged me into AoT by random chance, I'm loving crunchyroll as well

Give me some good recos to watch - no kiddie crap please. It seems all offerings involve high school dramas or cute fuzzy monsters

No high school drama or fuzzy monsters? I recco "Baccano!" then, it definitely does not have those.

Though IMO, it's worth finding somewhere other than cruchyroll/anilinkz to watch it because the dubbed version is really, really, really good (I actually prefer it over watching it subbed).

Also, the ads on cruchyroll are really annoying, both because they're terrible and they pop up in the middle of the show at 4x the volume of the episode... definitely like anilinkz more just for that reason.

Indeed. The current defacto ad on CrunchyRoll (for example) is for some weird online flash racing game...which is basically just visuals of bad graphics and a LOUD, really annoying thrash metal song.

It's got some okay ones...the actually Crunchyroll Ad is easy to sit through, and there was one day where it was short tv spots for that last romantic drama movie written by Nick Sparks...which didn't bother me...

...but yeah, more often than not the ads on Crunchyroll are aggravating! Though, it should be noted that they are probably annoying on purpose, so you'll shell out the $8/month for a premium acct and avoid those ads altogether. I'm too cheap tho.

And yeah, I'm a big fan of dubbing when it's done right...and in some cases the English dub is more dear to me than the Subbed (Eva is one of these for me)...and contrary to popular belief, there is nothing wrong with enjoying good dubs. :p Tho some hardcore Otaku's may call me names for it. I careth not. :p

Shinsekai yori was a really complete anime for me. Just finished and I was hooked through it all. definately hall of fame quality.

sadly i tried to ramp on from SSY to devil survivor. It was a mistake. Expectations were too high coming in so i felt really disappointed to effectively get another digimon style show.

I think anyone who sits 100% one way or the other is probably being silly. I know some people can't stand reading while watching, but some dubs are practically unwatchable and/or ruin the show flat-out, too. I tend to prefer subs these days, but there are some really stand-out dubbed shows (like Baccano), and ones that I can go either way on (like the EVA movies, though these days I lean towards subs on that too, or better example, Darker than Black (season one) - both dubbed and subbed are equally watchable, imo) and then there are some which are acceptable if you *really* can't stand subtitles, which probably makes up the most of the flock.

It also comes down to other factors too, though, for me: you get subs a LOT earlier than dubs. In fact, the concept of "fandubs" horrifies me, even though I've never tried any. XD So there's the patience factor. There's also translation and pacing issues - you can be forced to alter the translated dialogue for dubs purely because of timing issues with the facial animations. Subs generally don't have that problem (nowhere near the same extent, anyway). There are a few other things I'm too tired to think of right now, I'm sure, but they all stack up to make a difference to me.

Flipside being, some dubs make for more humour or a more "familiar" feel to things (let's face it, some of the ad-libbed lines in the dub of Melancholy are pure gold!), and allow you to watch the action more easily. Plus it can be interesting to see the difference in quality when a VA busts out some impressive third-language lines which the original Japanese VA butchered. XD

Thus why it's foolish to rule either one out. A good dub is always worthwhile, even if the sub is just as good/better. It's just more hit-and-miss than subs tend to be these days. *shrug*

Glad you enjoyed! And yeah, probably not the best follow-up to the glorious SSY...I'm not really following Devil Survivor any more, as it was a bit generic and the few interesting bits to it weren't really enough to keep me watching. :p

Sidenote: Coleen Clinkenbeard (who does the English dub voice of Luffy on ONE PIECE), will be at Fan Expo in my city again this year...and this time I MIGHT brave the insane line (seriously, people are nuts for her; her line was capped within five minutes of arriving last year) to get her autograph and say hi...(is it wrong to want her to autograph the Manga on a particularly cool Luffy pose page (probably one of him sleeping or eating)? We shall see. Last year I balked at the line...but I missed ever meeting the English dub cast of Eva for balking at lines, so maybe...

She's also Ritsuko in the Eva rebuild films, and Noriko in SUMMER WARS.

So I've got a lot for her to sign.

Kinda funny actually like 3 yrs ago when I sepertared from ex wife I was in a funk watching a lot of Gundam 00 and Last Exile along with a ton others and I started picking up on a few phrases and when her bill collectors started calling me if repeat what I memorized. That shit was funny and I got multiple responses ranging from anger to uncontrollable loln on their parts before I hung up in their faces. Great stuff.

Watched 6 episodes of Baccano tonight; show's awesome. Like a 1930's Cowboy Bebop with some supernatural twists. Love'n it.

Not to be taken wrong with this reply but yes I feel ya! It's like waiting for the next Game of Thrones ep each week but atleast we get an hr of that! This 22 mins a week shit sucks!!!

You say that, but at the end of the day I'd rather 22 minutes of pure quality and awesomeness than 40 minutes (an hour with ads) of mediocre TV. Which is not directed at Game of Thrones, that is awesome, but 90% of TV shows these days could take a leaf out the anime book and cut out the useless filler and whanot...

By the same token, a *good* anime series, if watched back-to-back, can feel so. much. longer than the sum of its parts. :p

Not yet, I've been out shopping most of the afternoon and have just set up my new keyboard, which is keeping me happy and occupied for the time being - plus I've been watching Spirited Away. XD

I'm about to watch it though. :p

AoT does not disappoint. Now to deal with the pain of another week of waiting.

edit: GoT did skip last week due to the American memorial day, I believe.

Yup, AoT episode 9 was glorious. :p I like it when the episode is somewhat slower to fit with what's happening on-screen, rather than rushing the dramatic bits to get back to the action or whatever, and this episode was pretty good in that regard. Can't wait to see next week. Also...need moar Recon Corps! :p :p :p

Really looking forward to more Recon Corps. It'd be nice to see how the newer recruits mesh with the old timers.
