So, Max Payne is broken on modern systems in a number of creative ways.

Lovely. At least there's a massive unofficial patch.

Gonna try it tomorrow on a clean re-install. If that doesn't work... then I guess I'm stuck waiting until the game comes to GOG, and I'll go back tp playing Ashes of Oahu or smth instead.

Just played through the first few levels of of Modern Warfare 2020s campaign. I'd forgot how intense COD campaigns get. Got killed constantly but it's awesome.

I heard that MW 2020 focused on lighting and it shows. The visual aspect of this game is stunning. If you told me I was watching next gen footage I'd believe you.

All right, I finally punched through the Russian bullet sponges in Chapter 2. That's when I stopped the last time I made any good progress with Max Payne.

The fan patch fixed all the issues. I can hear the music again, and also I'm getting the slides that tell the story.

Murdering thugs in bullet time is so much fun ti should be illegal.

Is that Max Payne 3? I never progressed far with that because of a ton of graphics issues. Dunno if I've still got it but I think I downloaded it from Steam so I should do. If there's a patch I might get on it again.

Finished Outer Worlds. Pretty interesting story that gets very grim and very grey towards the end. I did everything I could in the story to get the best possible outcome and was pretty happy with the ending.

If they make a sequel I'd like it if they pulled a bit back from the whole the world has turned to shit/fallout narrative and instead leaned into the 50s space adventure potential. Something more playful like a Flash Gordon like universe.

Also played more Modern Warfare 2020. Just played through a story section where you're a kid in a middle eastern town that comes under attack by Russians retaliating from a terror attack. Parents are killed and the city gets slaughtered. That's some grim shit to play through.

I think this time around the game does a good job of switching the story away from the war porn and instead tells a much more nuanced tale with a focus on the freedom fighters and their motivations.

Finished Modern Warfare 2020. Excellent campaign. Seems it basically serves as a prequel for the Modern Warfare series. I wouldn't mind a remake of the MW trilogy but I can't imagine they'll dedicate that kind of ressources.

Wondering what to play next. I'm considering starting either Outer Wilds, Darksiders 3 or The Last Guardian. I'm spoiled for choices.

I started making a list of the linear 90s and 2000s games I've got in my backlog. Gonna try working through it in chronological-ish order.

I ain't got time for old games. Too much new stuff coming out every year.

Started up Outer Wilds this morning since it's the one I was most curious and also weary about. From the Game of the Year discussions last year, it's bound to be a real brain teaser.

For those not in the know, Outer Wilds is a smart little space exploration game where you travel around a solar system trying to uncover the mysteries of the planets and trying to prevent a catastrophic event. It's highly dependent on player observation.

I'm going to keep a word document open to take notes.

Just lifted off the home planet and immediately set back down on the other side of the planet. A weird giant plant seed crashed on the surface and there's "space" inside it. Music is coming out of it. Curious.

I have gained approximately 2 hours/day due to lack of commute, so I can put some proper effort into my backlog and tick off at least the more linear games from it, if nothing else.

Oh man I loved that game, I played it a ton of times at uni. The second is just as good iirc.

Took a break from Outer Wilds because my mind was starting to melt.

Started Darksiders 3 because I suspected it would be the complete opposite of Outer Wilds which it is.

Playing D3 feels kinda sad. Everything about that game is low budget. The character design, the writing, the animations, the environment. It almost looks like a mobile game.

But I do want to experience the story. Maybe one day we get a higher budget finale.

I should add that the combat feels off. I picked classic hack and slash mode and the timing of the button inputs feel slightly laggy. I'm not hitting the dodge windows I feel I should which makes the combat frustrating.

Edit: Oh, the makers from D2 just appeared. I liked those knock-off dwarves. And there's a female maker! And interactable humans. I don't remember there being any humans in the prior games.

Maybe this game isn't half-bad.

This takes place before the humans were totally wiped.

I played before the classic mode was introduced, and the controls were fine on M+K.

It probably is. Just isn't really clicking with me.

I've bounced off both Darksiders 3 and Outer Wilds today. Darksiders just isn't very good and I don't like the soft Dark Souls mechanics.

Outer Wilds is too imposing. I can't get a grasp of the space flight mechanics o the jet pack for that matter. And the mystery puzzle aspect is daunting. Like The Witness levels of complexity from my observation and I'm only scratching the surface.

Decided to watch a Nerd3 let's play instead. Nerd guy is a lot smarter than I am.

I felt Darksiders was decent. Mind, I came into it off replaying the previous games on hard difficulty, so I was used to enemies doing massive damage.

I agree that the game shifted the balance WAY too much towards combat, though- the design decisions on how you get your powers meant they couldn't really get creative with puzzles until the very last parts of the game. Which is a shame.

EDIT: I'm not usually one to complain about dated visuals... but Max Payne 2 could use an HD coat of paint. It looks not as good as the (modded) original.

gunfights still fun, though. Diving to avoid bullets doesn't deplete the meter anymore, so you can chain those together.

40 hours into Persona 5 Royal, finished the third palace and spent some time building social links. I think I'm now past the point I got up to first time around and the good news this time is that nothing else is tempting me away from it

Played an hour or so of The Last Guardian. The textures look like something from an early PS3 game but the atmosphere and design of the Bird Dog is stunning.

Unfortunately the controls are terrible and the pathfinding is confusing. Which makes the game more frustrating than satisfying. The troubled development and the antiquated game design is very apparent.

Gonna keep pushing though because the concept is so novel.

Edit: Nope, nope, no. Not playing anymore. Just had to do a terrible ledge jump sequence with miss leading handholds and then a bad story sequence with no check point.

Fuck this game.

Ha my thoughts exactly as I played. Ps2 nostalgia couldn't save the clumsy controls. Really wanted to like it, but it had aged about 3 years before they even released it. I abandoned it.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

It's a shame about Last Guardian. Give it to Blue Point and have them release a modernized PS5 version.

I remember looking forward to it after Shadow of the Colossus. Then it got delayed, and delayed, and forgotten about. Then when it finally got released, it wasn't updated to the current gen.

Reminds me, where the hell is Mount and Blade 2? I used to play the original, must be years ago now but it was a lot of fun. Then they announced a sequel - and have been working on it so long that by the time they release it, it will probably be a 5 year old game.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.
