So if it's that poorly put together, is admitted to be a rushed-out-the-door incomplete product by the developer, etc, etc, what makes it a AAA title? >.>

That it was expensive to make? That is, usually, the common denominator when describing AAA games. You can actually see the money. It's there in the details but you can also see all the "holes", all the half baked level design, the lack of polish and half finished game play mechanics.

I've played around 2/3 of the way through it now and, surprisingly, it actually gets better. Maybe that's just me playing on easy getting used to the games problems or maybe that opening section of the game was rushed and therefore felt so much more awful. As soon as human enemies showed up in the game I am suddenly swimming in armor, since every other soldier drops it. It really is a shame, the game has promise. The Weyland-Yutani corp is a great antagonist and there are some interesting, if unsatisfying, story beats. Unfortunately the enemy remains faceless, it's just hundreds of aliens and mercs getting mowed down by a bunch of Jarheads.

Why would you waste so much time playing a game even you consider to be dreadful?

I guess I come from a more developer-type background, Apt, because this thread on Gamedev.net more or less mirrors my opinion vs media opinion vs public perception pretty well (the last post (it's a short thread) is more or less where I stand on what makes a game "AAA" - that is, it's quality and success, not its budget): Linky.

Not that there is an actual definition of the phrase, as it tends to exist in the public in different forms as shown in that thread. But I'd never call a buggy release a AAA title - thus my question.

Anyway, playing:
PC -
Kerbal Space Program. It's awesome.
Tomb Raider - only a tiny bit into it, but enjoying it so far. Got a bug on the campsite menu which meant I couldn't exit the skills screen, so lost a bit of progress and put it aside for now.
PS Vita -
Persona 4 Golden, all day every day (or it feels like it). Loving this game. It actually managed to completely distract me from: the Last of Us, ICO, ACIII, Heavy Rain, and Ni No Kuni on the PS3, and also tore me away from Gravity Rush on the Vita, which is also awesome but not as addicting (apparently XD).

Will be playing:
PC -
Shogun 2
Just Cause 2
Magicka
Kinetic Void
Others -
Hopefully all those games P4:G has distracted me from. :S

Masochism? I guess it is a mix of initial curiosity and my need to finish every game I start (unless I am not having fun). I like FPS games and there's not a lot to choose from on the market right now that I haven't played. And like I mentioned above, the game actually gets better... or I adapted to the game. What ever, the game is like 8 hours long.

Oh I agree with you sentiment, how ever as you say in the eyes of the public and the media AAA simply means big budget title, usually a flagship of the publisher. In this case Aliens: CM was certainly meant to be a cash cow.

I guess a good comparison for how I view the term is kind of like the video game version of "big Hollywood movie". There are a certain amount of negative connotations to it and some techniques often used across both (pandering to the stupidest members of the audience, a certain amount of hollow-ness, chasing being the "biggest" at all costs), but they both spit out some absolute gems every now and then (Bioshock: Infinite, the Avengers), and they often produce a lot of mediocre, but enjoyable with the right mindset stuff.
I agree that the term should mean quality, but if it did, the "AAA gaming industry" wouldn't be a term as it is.

Wait, what? The Avengers an 'absolute gem'? Surely we're not talking about that overrated tosh by Joss Whedon, are we?

Been playing a ton of Shadowrun returns over the weekend.

I've gotta say, if all the Kickstarter games turn out to be this quality, we may be looking at the future of gaming. The game's limited scope, but very, very, solid. Can't wait to see what the modders will make of it.

Eh, I thought it was fantastic, but to each their own. You get what I was saying, and that is the point.

Got 42 provences and am rolling through the brutii in Africa, the scipi handed me my ass there and took Salona off me, and I have no armies near by for a swift rebutal, they have about 4 armies gathered around Segestica and its gonna fall soon, so I'm going to throw everything at them to stall while I try and nab the last Germanic and Armenian provences quickly for the win.

I got a starter pack / month subscription to Eve Online, in the summer sale. Anyone else playing Eve?

I am indeed. Skilling up all my shields right now, while mining in my barge to get the cash monies.

I'm not nearly so organised. I'm just working through whatever missions take my fancy right now.

Need to work out a solid way to make money -- I'm trying to get all the planet management skills but a couple are more than I can afford at the minute.

EDIT: what barge do you have?

The retriever. Best way to make isk is to either mission or mine until you have some skills setup, unless you plan on going industrial.

Should have said you were going to get it a month ago - I jacked it in then, found a random newb in a station and just gave him all my shit. He probably can't fly/use most of it but I'm secretly a nice guy which is why I wasn't getting on with Eve where people are c***s.
