Trav and Amp can give you good advice to move you along. What class? My Soul Arrows on Sor came in great handy taking out from a distance. The claymore, estioc, or a spear will help as well. Claymore worked best for me.

I'm playing the first Dark Souls game.

There are enough guides around the internet, I just like learning to defeat the enemies myself. Of course, it's aggravating to lose all your humanity because you couldn't dodge a goddamn attack to the left. It doesn't help that I can't for the life of me get a shield/sword combo that would keep my carry load at 25% and let me actually dodge shit.

Maybe a shield/spear combo will help. That way you can attack without lowering your shield. It's how I managed my first play through. Also, with a good shield and some armour you're fine with a heavier load. Playing light is hard first time around.

The issue is, those enemies I can dodge are the same enemies I can take with a shield. When I get to a black knight or something like those gigantic reanimated knights in Darkroot Garden (which are the current mobs frustrating me), the shield is no use and I can't dodge either.

I have just found The Partizan, which I'm going to upgrade to use in place my uchigatana (+5) doesn't work.

My biggest tip for this area, and for playing light in general, is... you don't have to fight everything. Don't keep going through an area like darkroot re-killing everything each time you die. Especially if you're talking about the stone knights in darkroot that get up a you pass. Run past them, you only need to reach the stairs that lead to the Moonlight Butterfly anyway. You can also loot all the treasure in the area by pretty much running and dodging.

The Black Knights are bastards though as they often stand in the way - the one down the twisty path is a pain. I used to lure him up the path, drop past him, run down and into the cave with the bonfire. You can then rest and come out to keep hitting him, and he won't respawn.

Most mobs telegraph a strike - dodge round as they do, and hit 'em in the back.

Edit. also Halberds are awesome for knocking away shields and killing in a few hits. Great for Sens Fortress.

Well, running past all the reanimated knights seemed to work. I finally got rid of the Moonlight Butterfly (after a billion tries I might say, I only had melee attacks and learning to dodge those spikes was tricky). I loved that bossfight though, such a tranquil and relaxing mood to get murdered in.

There is no doubt, the combat in this game is magnificent.

Maybe I should get hold of a pyromancy.

Hell yes. It doesn't cost much to upgrade, and if you get the big combustion spell (i forget what its called but you only get four of them, its not fireball tho) it can be really useful to fling at someone who you're otherwise having trouble with. And, upgraded, good for fire sensitive bosses too.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I'm glad you enjoy it. Dark Souls 1, and the series as a whole, is one of my favourites. There is something about the music and the atmosphere of those games - especially the first one - that really appeals to me. If you have the patience for it, I think playing through all three games back to back would be quite the experience.

I don't think there's any way I'm ever playing a Dark Souls game. Sounds way beyond my skill level...

Since finishing BInfinite, I've had no time to game.

I need to get back to AoK, but Yodit 1 on Moderate is a difficult nut to crack. I'll try to give it a few focused tries on the weekend, but it seems to require really precise starting game once I get control over a village, and I'm having serious problems with that (also not having immediate access to all resources hurts)

If that doesn't work out, I'm feeling very tempted to reinstall Simpson's hit'n'run and just mess around with that for a bit.

Ok I caved, I've done a late pre-order for Horizon. Tons of guides and spoilers online though, I'm already sold so I'm avoiding them like the plague - I'm going to hit it fresh and see where it takes me.

Downloaded and installed Torment. Played for half an hour. Have to play further when I have more time to get really into it. First impression is as I expected, graphics much like Pillars, and much reading. Might need a dictionary sometimes. So far so good.

This is gonna take some time to figure out, I can tell. So far I have no idea if the Tides are important, I'm just doing the talky thing. Oh, and I'm a Nano wiht a charisma skill who can read people's "surface thoughts".

I managed to get in a ten or so minutes of intro into Planescape. We'll see how it goes from here. I hear distressing things about the ps4 version, but my laptop is getting too old to run it well.

My PC (gtx 1060 and 4 ghz AMD FX 48000)
seemed to hiccup a tad on loading screens, but since I started playing (keeping all default settings but turning the anti-aliasing to medium), I've not had any issues.

The game is basically running the same unity tech as Pillars of Eternity, so if your laptop ran that, you should be fine for Torment.

In related news: I finally caved and downloaded GOG Galaxy, because that was the only way to make the latest Cossacks3 DLC function properly and have the new campaigns show up in the campaign menu.
The good thing about Galaxy is that I can choose which games from my account I want using it. The annoying thing is, it requires a re-download/install. Still, once I feel an urge to do some RTS gaming again, I'll have a fix on standby. (I'm feeling like I need a hiatus from AoK HD. I'll wait until they implement the next patch, 5.3, that's supposed to address a bunch of campaign bugs).

The game gave me Observant, but I think I might have switched that to Intelligent.

I'm tempted to talk to everyone, but I'm not sure how much urgency I should feel about the Resonance chamber. Unlike Planescape, where you're literally on your own to figure shit out while you're in Sigil, here there's an immediate sense off urgency, and I'm not sure how real it is.

I've gotten back into Hearthstone now that my commute is much longer, and it still is quite fun. I've made a Hunter deck that seems to be doing relatively well (Relatively as in I've managed to claw my way up to rank 10 once).

I've been playing Mafia 3 and Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Finished Mafia 3 in time for the Switch to arrive.

Mafia 3 is a frustrating game. It has a ton of strengths, like the presentation, the writing, the feeling of the impact whether you're shooting or ramming something while driving, the sound design is amazing and the use of music is phenomenal, the lighting is exquisite, etc. but then you have all the little things that ruin the experience. The driving is terrible, the AI is dumb as dogshit, you can't quick travel in the game so you're forced to drive for 5 minutes again and again to do optional loyalty bullshit, the actual mission structure is padded with copy-pasted objectives, buildings and environments are reused over and over creating a constant sense of deja vu, etc.

I liked playing Mafia 3, it's a good open world podcast game, but boy did it try my patience. I hope the studio make a sequel and perhaps spend a bit more money on the game.

Currently 2 or 3 hours into Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It's an interesting game. It's really pretty but everything is so low resolution and the draw distance is so low that it feels like being near sighted. Coming off of Mafia 3 which looks amazing, it's pretty jarring playing Zelda. It's like playing a PC game on the lowest settings to the point that it looks like textures are missing a lot of the time.

But it plays phenomenally. I'm currently doing some introductory objectives meant to teach you the basics and it is wonderfully designed and well paced. The game is incredibly charming and filled with this curios eagerness to see what is over the next hill. There is a ton of show, don't tell, in the way the environment is littered with relics and ruins.

I think what is the best part of the game is how rewarding it feels to explore and test the boundaries of your abilities. How long can you survive in the cold? How high can you climb before you run out of stamina? How do you reach that chest/strange object, etc.
