Been doing some work on further clearing out my Steam "to-play" list.
I've been playing:
Played about 15 minutes of
Final Fantasy 8 and gave up. I had this romantic dream of playing all the Final Fantasy games after 7 starting with 8 but maaaaan is that game outdated. It has some interesting ideas and if I had played it in the 90s I would have liked it but no way am I suffering through this game now.
The polygon box character are fun though.
Played some more
Galak-Z: The Dimensional after having had this installed since summer or something like that. This game just doesn't click with me. Besides being disappointed with the change in art style between announcement and release, and the rogue-like design, what really bothers me about the game is the movement mechanic. It makes sense for a space game but the thruster based direction specific movement is way too hard to control for me. I like the premise but it's not fun.
Installed
Warhammer_ The Eternal Crusade and gave that a try. It's basically a big third person multiplayer shooter similar to the multiplayer from Warhammer 40K: Space marine. The size of the thing is cool. The addition of vehicles and multiple factions to play as is really cool but this is not exactly a competitive game on the multiplayer shooter sceme. This is a game for Warhammer enthusiasts more than an actually appealing experience.
Tried out
Naruto Shuppuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3. I didn't actually have any interest in this game at all but I got it for free in a Humble Bundle deal. I've heard that the Ninja Storm games should actually be pretty good if you're into Naruto but I am not.
I played about an hour of it and was actually pleasantly surprised. This is a strange and pretty alternative game, sort of reminds me of Azura's Wrath in terms of the craziness and the scope of the game. The game has a cold open with you fighting off a Gigantic nine tailed fox monster that is Godzillarizing a Japanese town. It was really cool and great fun even though I understood little.
It then threw me right into a boss fighting stage with no tutorial and I decided to drop the game. I think there's actually a good game in here for Naruto fans but I don't think the game is for me.
The mention of
Conan: Exiles in the beta thread made me decide to try out a few of the unfinished survival-crafting games on Steam. I've had
ARK: Survival Evolved and
Rust lying in my library for a while so installed both of them. I was surprised by how bad and how unfinished both these games felt.
They're both completely similar. You wake up in some zone/beach, you need to go find some food, resources, shelter and then start upgrading your character and build/upgrade. The problem is that these games play like ass, there is no tutorial or logic to the start of the game. You just have a bunch of menus and resources and then you're left to your own devices. Good fucking luck if you wake up in the middle of the night inside another players outpost and have no fucking idea what is going on.
This was cool and okay in
Minecraft in 2010. In 2017 in a game that has been under development for 3+ years, this is pretty pathetic. I am sure it makes sense if you've played other games like these or you watch a bunch of Twitch streams but this was one of the most thoroughly unsatisfying experiences I've had with a new genre. I don't see the appeal at all beyond being made for youtubers.
Played some
Sid Meier's Pirates. I am not going to continue playing this game because the number pad controls are horrific and the game feels old but this is actually a surprisingly interesting and well made game. I wish I'd been aware of it back when it came out originally.
This is basically the stripped down sim version of
Assassin's Creed: Black Flag only with more charm and panage. You're a young captain that sails around the Caribbean hauling cargo and boarding ships, while you build up reputation various countries and sea ports. It's a really well tuned gameplay loop.
Tried out
Zeno Clash 2. l didn't like the first one and I don't like the sequel either all though I have to admit the game has charm. Basically the Zeno Clash games are first person story based melee fighting games where you run around punching enemies in the face.
The games big feature is the bizarre world it takes place in and the alien characters it features. Zeno Clash plays like the weird acid trup inspired comics you'd read from the 70s. It's a really cool otherworldly premise but unfortunately the game is so low budget that it just doesn't really feel fun.
Downloaded
Ittle Dew on a whim since I liked what I saw of its sequel Ittle Dew 2 that released a few weeks ago.
Ittle Dew is basically a whimsical little Indie version of the dungeons from
Zelda, centred around item based puzzles and gimmicky writing. It reads and plays like satire of Zelda and similar games. It's short, well designed, has a great art style and doesn't over stay it's welcome.
I will definitely be playing the sequel when it drops in a price a bit.
Been playing a bunch of
Pacman 256. Originally I downloaded this for Android and didn't really like it. I bought it on Steam this year and I ended up getting hooked. This is a great evolution of the Pacman formula. The scrolling power-up based collectathon makes for really fun gameplay. It's not a game I want to play for long durations but 5-15 minutes here and there is really satisfying.
Finally I bought
Hitman: The Complete First Season for the PC. I played a bit with a friend on PS4 but we never really got that into it. Now that I own in on PC I am in love with the game. Hitman is a ridiculously sleek and well made package. The presentation, design, feel, it's just a really well playing, challenging game.
It's a very pure example of a sandbox game where, whether you use the missions/challenges as a guide or you just go off on your own, you can create a truly special and entertaining experience.
This is a game where when I fail I don't feel made because I know I fucked up and when I succeed I feel like the best Hitman in the world.
Go buy Hitman, it's fucking amazing.
