Breaking out the oldschool games since my graphics card is toast - been playing Icewind Dale 2 (which I've never beaten because it's SOOOO LOOONG) and finally beat Warlords Battlecry 3 (which is an obscure game from the 5$ pile, which is only about 10% different from WBC2, so similar that they have the same (and often incorrect) tooltips). WBC3 became unfun as I discovered the way to break the game.

it had the awesome "play it any order you want campaign" though.


I really need to beat it one of these days.

I remember Battlecry. Was fun for a while, but I made "Assassin" heroe without know how broken it would become. I finished it, but by about 2/3rds of the way through my main guy could kill anything in the game in about the time most enemies would get 2 swings in (seriously, like a 60% chance to instakill on hit and fast attack speed, even against heroes).

I'm playing a free 21 day trial of Eve.
I dunno that it's enough my thing to continue with it, but I do enjoy it. And more than anything, I really like many of the ideals behind the company that makes it. It's extraordinarily player driven, and they unapologetically are NOT trying to please everyone. You can buy game time for exhorbitant amounts in game if you wish, "activating" your trial account to a full membership costs $5 then you just pay subscription, and all expansions are free.
And fuck me, it looks amazing for a game a year older than WoW.
Whenever a big game company pulls a dick move purely designed to try and make them more money and someone says, "they are still a company, making money is their priority", I always think of CCP and how you don't need to be a dick to do it.

Well, EVE did have a complete engine overhaul not so long ago, Luc.

As for Warlords, go and play good ol' Warlords 3 Darklord's Rising. It beats Battlecry by miles.

Yeah I figured they'd done that sort of thing. More I like the fact that they did. That they have kept it looking good for free.

Keep in mind it's a rather oldschool game, but it's the newest 'classic' warlords, and by far the best (though I do have a thing for warlords 1, what with the recruitment available depending on specific town and not faction. all with some towns offering stronger version of the same unit. awesome, really). A turn-based strategy with strong RPG elements. And don't expect much from graphics :p

And as for overhauls, WoW's graphics went through a LOT since release. Can't compare textures, character models and spell effects we now have with vanilla, no sir.
Just check how shaman item sets evolved over time.

Sounds good to me :p And yeah, I wasn't expecting something spiffy.

True there have been upgrades to WoW. But you know what else you can't compare textures with? WoW and Eve :)
I guess a part of it is that I remember when WoW came out the graphics looked pretty decent for the time. Now I think the current ones are a bit shit.
I thought Eve looked pretty good for the time, and now I have this:
(well it's down the bottom anyway :p) (for some reason that pic is a little "fuzzy" much sharper in game)

Which is awesome :p
I'm sure some of that is due to the...garish nature of WoW's "stylised" graphics, but still...

I know how nice EVE looks, I've played a trial like 2 months ago :p And quite frankly, EVE can allow itself to go into much more detail - most of what you see is empty space, or insides of a station - it's not supposed to handle a couple hundred players in the same location at a time regularly (and I know there are big battles, but you don't have places like Stormwind or Orgrimmar;))

True there aren't places like quite like that, but the sheer scale of the stuff in space... Also everyone who plays does run on the one server, no mirrors or anything. And WoW's battles never get anywhere near as large. So the strain is less regular, but much larger.
Although WoW is designed to be able to almost run on a Commodore 64, so there is that :p As I said though, I like that Eve is unnashamedly not trying to be for everyone. Heck they're saying Dust 514 (which will be attatched to Eve) isn't likely to be the sort of game for much of Eve's players.

sadly, it won't run on a 64-bit OS.
Also, what I remember of Warlords IV wasn't too bad. although it got repetitive rather fast.

Darklords Rising won't run on 64-bit? Shit, I'm outta luck then :p

I just finished Gears of War 3 (took me roughly 17 hours). I laughed (manically), I cried (yes, I CRIED! If you've played it you know when and why. Mad World, goddammit!), I executed downed enemies left and right with a big grin on my face. Only managed 18 out of 24 different executions, but I'd say that's acceptable on my first playthrough.


Played through the whole thing co-op with my brother, and it was AWESOME! Definitely a worthy ending to the series.....but I want MOAR!




Dolmen: Bulletstorm is hilarious. I love that game!
Things and stuffs...and other important objects.

I got seriously back into WoW, to the extent that I manically play several alts while maintaining the lightweight raiding schedule (2 raids a week). This game came so far since it's release, it's incredible. It's just so polished and well-made! I want to hate it, but I just love it more instead. Can't wait for Heroes VI release to set me free from this prison!

I got Witcher 2 last week, read about the big patch coming so left it until Saturday to start playing. Very good, the fighting is simply enjoyable in it, and the storyline good enough to keep you happy while you're not fighting.

I hear they added a real tutorial sequence in that update. And Hood's Balls, it needed one.

I didn't get the fuss about the lack of tutorial, to be honest, the tooltips and a brief look at the controls were more than enough. Conversely, I was the only one on the planet to find the late game hard.

Tempted to replay on the other path with the new Dark difficulty, and give the Arena mode a try.

Playing Dark Souls.

If you liked Demon's Souls, you'll like this.

Much greater emphasis on exploration this time around - great to be wandering around a huge castle setting again. I think if you take things carefully, and know when to simply run like hell from things that are clearly meant for you to tackle later in the game, it's rewarding just to make it to the next bonfire/safe point. Also, I don't mind (all the time) when enemies respawn - as you replay certain areas, you get to perfect them, taking out every mob without taking damage. I say I don't mind much, but I was playing earlier, and having almost cleared an area of enemies, I returned to an earlier bonfire to level up - forgetting the respawn rule. Yep, they all came back. I can certainly see why some people don't have the patience for this - usually when you get put back a step in a game, the instinct is to rush back to where you were. Try that here, and you lose everything very quickly.

I also like the way weapons and armour in this game make a real difference - they don't just change your stats and look a bit different, they actually handle differently, and heavier armour has real weight as it slows movements down if you're not strong enough to carry it well. Change into something light, and suddenly rolling and jumping is possible.

Hacking my way through anyway - nothing quite compares to the boss battles in this game; impossible to start with, then a glimmer of hope after repeated attempts, and then the final success when you've figured it out.

Some friends of mine have been getting me into League of Legends recently. I'm not very good, but it's a pretty enjoyable game. I've not really tried anything in this subgenre of RTS before, it's quite an interesting one, I feel. Lots of subtlety to playing it well. Anyone else play?
