As an Irish republican, by which I mean I live in the Irish republic who rebelled and won freedom from the monarchy in question I can say:

I don't care, you lot are playing 30+ million for that wedding so you have every right to enjoy it!

It's more of an addition rather than a step down. It's not like he stops being a prince or anything; he just gets a couple of extra titles.

But...who was Duke before him? Was it just vacant? Or did the Queen just make it up?

These are the burning questions that keep me awake.

Vacant since, I believe, 1904.

To hate the idea of a monarchy is one thing but to hate the royal family so passionately -- the people themselves, who've done nothing specific to slight us, other than existing through no choice of their own; I don't understand that.
The love I bear thee can afford no better term than this: thou art a villain.

They had a choice, you can renounce your position - famously a certain Anthony Wedgewood Benn renounced his place in the aristocracy.

So the members of the current royal family have chosen. And they chose... unwisely....
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell

Yeah, that's a sketchy thing though.

If Prince Harry, (lets say for arguments sake) renounced...Dollars to donuts MOST of his family would not talk to him after. Are you saying that if it was you and renouncing meant no longer having your family you'd be cool with that? You're talking about disowning a way of life you've been raised under and is ingrained in your family so deeply that even the Queen herself feels she can't do certain basic things (even in private) because they are unseemly for royalty to do.

I think you see it easier than it likely would be.

This isn't like quitting a job you don't like, this is like detaching a large chunk of your identity and trying to find some peace after that. I can't imagine that to be an easy thing.

As, technically, HRH The Queen is my employer, I guess I'm supposed to give a shit. But basically; today two people I don't know got married, one of whom (now both, I suppose) represents an institution I despise.

I agree. Upper middle/ middle class is such a horrid group of underachievers and wanna-bes. They should aim higher, those damned good-for-nothing freemen, diluting the blood of your Royal House with their titleless muddiness. I really don't know why Liz let William marry into them.

My "goosebumps" moment of the wedding, when the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight did it's fly past.

I know that most TV/monitor speakers won't do right, but hell, the sound of those Rolls Royce Merlin's reminded me of the time that Boeing B17G Flying Fortress "Sally B" (in a B17F mock up without the chin turret and with the Memphis Belle nose art and markings on one side) flew over back in 1995.
Think that the Duxford based machine flew around a height of somewhere in between 500 - 1000 meters.

I never will forget the sound of those Wright Cyclones.

to be fair, that wedding is going to bring in a hell of a lot more than what was spent.

I don't mind the royals, in my mind, yes inherited power and all that jazz, they do no harm and bring money into the country

And too all the twats crying that the queen is a war criminal and all the rest of that bollocks, the royals have no power, if you want to point a finger, aim for the government at the time.

Personally, I would define my position on the issue as 'pointedly apathetic'. Apart from them being part of the lists of names I learnt as a kid growing up in History class and the like, royalty has no bearing on my culture, sense of tradition, or understanding of the idea of "Britishness". I refuse to get excited about the wedding of a couple that I know nothing about and have no relevence to me beyond potentially appearing on some stamps someday.

It's not worth getting rid of the monarchy - I'd far rather the political will for reform was channelled towards a part of our political system that still has some effect (eg. House of Lords or a more fundamental restructuring of our voting system beyond the AV referendum). But that doesn't mean I have to give them any of my time or respect.

Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

But why? How have they wronged you so? What is it they do that pisses you off to such a degree that they get your hatred?

Can you explain what it is they do that personally affects you enough to earn such ire?

(just curious is all, no offense meant)

What they represent is entirely wrong. And that's pretty much the beginning, middle and end of it. You, disagreeing with me (which I shall allow just this once :p), might counter saying they represent British history, culture and tradition. But what they truly represent is inherited privilege; that idea that someone is better than another person simply by being born to a particular family or lineage. And, in one form or another, that particular idea has been a blight on humanity for about as long as there have been people. Simply by existing they wrong you, me and almost every other human being who has ever lived.

Is this a spiritual wronging? A wronging that makes you lose sleep or something?

If this being born to privilage/royalty was something SPREADING and actively hurting people, I think you'd have an argument. As it is, it merely exists and correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't actually harm anyone. If they are merely symbolically wronging you, then I feel you shouldn't allow it to bother you so much. I'm sure the world is full of things symbolically wronging you (me,us), but that sort of thing shouldn't be troubling UNLESS it is actively harming the 'human condition'.

And man... if immigrants can't even be respected when they are royal family, I pity normal immigrants the the UK. :p :p

(for the record, i don't care about the wedding/royals at all)

Blegh. All the women in my family were ,"Oh it was so beautiful!"

I was all, "Who gives a shit?"

They were all, "You are just jealous!"

I was all, "No. I'm not jealous of Bill Gates. I admire him. Why should I be jealous of the Royal Family? Jealous is not a synonym for 'disgusted'. You wouldn't give two flying fucks if some marine got wed on TV, why do you care when some people who contribute nothing to humankind's progress or safety get wed?"

They shut up.
