hey guys
ok so the origional plan was to have loads of concept art for this uni book/game/level/project...thing I was doing on Malaz Island, as it goes I'm completely retarded at making levels so the majority of time at the moment working on fixing problems that seem to constantly pop up on various programs, anyways enough bitchin', I was in WH Smith earlier and I caught myself staring longingly at the 'the crippled god' and after a great gnashing of teeth at not having enough money to buy it I realized that even if I did, I still haven't finished dust of dreams, it was at this point I decided I better do something to put a stop to this Malazan neglection and get some work to you guys in the process. the first pic is the last piece of concept art I was able to get done for the game before things started going horr....never mind no more bitchin' and the second is Karsa. nuff said, really hope you like the pic and I'm sorry for taking soooo long to get some art to you.

Onrack,

That is very nice sketch work. I too have tried to capture kalam on paper and fared far worse than you have. What Game/Book/whatever are you working on? Ill check the search function after posting this, but wanted to commend you on your work. If I can be of any help with sketches i'd love to do what i can.

Holy crap. That's seriously good. I'm damned impressed, and wish I had a fraction of your talent :/

Although, given the events in TCG with Karsa, I've been kinda forced to reevaluate my mental image of him. That does, however, look very much like the way he was in Deadhouse Gates, or early Midnight Tides.

Oh, as a criticism: Karsa's eye is a bit... out of proportion, I think. It doesn't look right, it's like a portrait eye but in a 3/4s profile.

I like both drawings, but Kalam is so often described as bearish that I think he must be a lot more bulky than that. He's definitely buff-ish rather than fat, but still pretty thick all over. I'd imagine a younger Dassem fitting that build better. As far as Karsa goes...we probably all have different ideas of his face, but otherwise I think that's pretty much perfect.

I imagine Kalam looks a bit like Tom Hardy in Bronson - bodywise...but I do like the face you've drawn:)

I don't agree with Karsa's hair, but other than that it's awesome!

cheers dude, I'm doint the level based on the last big moment in the bonehunters with Kalam escorting Tavor and T'amber through malaz to see Laseen, or at least that was the idea, as it stands now I'm working on two small areas based on the mouse quarter and raven hill, I would have liked to go so much further than I have though working in unreal is a pain. thanks a lot for the offer dude thats really kind and I would take you up on that but part of the idea for this uni project was to pick a book that hasn't been turned into a film, animation, comic or any other type of visual media so it's all my work, I really appreciate it though, thanks.

thanks man much appreciated

aaaaargh I wanna read it, I just started re reading game of thrones for er, no apparent reason, but I think I might just have to tackle dust of dreams again, though I'm hopin' the story is gonna pick up a bit soon.

yeah dude I see what you mean, I wanted to make his face wiiiiide ya know like a really big face, but I could definitely sort the shadows out on it so it doesn't look so 'full on' and a bit rounder, cheers.

aye, I see where your coming from dude, though game wise I think it would be risky to make him any bigger than that, he's described as being fast too and I think a frame bigger than this one would look unfeasible in game play, but yup you are totally right, thanks man

hmmm looking at some bronson pics, he's really not all that big, don't get me wrong he is big but all the mass is in his trapezius and pectoral muscles, interestingly enought this is the same way I've drawn Kalam here, though it's kinda covered up by armour, hair and all that other jazz, but heres a quick paint over to show you what I mean.

as for Karsa I've had his this way in my head for so long I really cant think of him any other way, haha can't or wont anyway, I suppose I'll get a clearer picture when I reading the crippled god,

I still can't imagine Kalam with long hair, no matter what, but otherwise I love it. I think he should be shorter, though, he's definately a head shorter than QB [which makes him look even more bearish when compared to the lean QB - which is why he's ofte seen as bearish, too] and right now he's simply too tall. I understand the sentiment, though, that for a game that wouldn't be as stylish and one needs to decide which is more important, style or accuracy.

Love Karsa, too, spot on except the eye. He needs small eyes, like half the width they are now [especially the front one looks way too manga-ish now] and that would give him the appropiately 'don't f*ck with me' look even more.

Good job overall!

And I don't think we'll ever see eye to eye on Karsa's hair, even if SE himself tells us what's right...but that's what's cool about this malazan art forum. We all have different mental images of the characters, although we've all read the same books with the same descriptions.

Your Karsa looks totally different from what I imagined but fits very well and captures his personality. I like your choice of palette.
Great concept of Kalam, imho this is what a "bearish" yet incredibly fast and fit man would look like. To second that I add a very useful and informative pic found on 4chan (yes, you can find such things on 4chan; unfortunately I don't know who the author is).

I like that chart, it explains nicely the 'bearish' thing. Shortly, Kalam's most likely an endomorph type and that makes him look huge with all the armour he's wearing.

The Chart is pretty damn handy.

Also, I suspect that the Karsa one needs to go into the Gallery for the front of the website.

Out of all the characters Karsa was always my favourite (followed closely by some others but thats not the point) but i have been looking for some good pictures of him and never really found them, this is the first one which i really love, well done!

The Kalam is awesome, especially the light sketches in motion. I can actually "see" it in my head, you've made it so the brain can fill in details and string it together like a comic book. Er, graphic novel, if you prefer. :)

But the Karsa is even better. For me, the definitive "attitude" shot. It's like he was strolling through a new town with people stopping and staring slack-jawed at him from the front of shops or the (dubious) safety of their houses, like in a western, as he's all "WTF are you looking at?"

Well done and thanks.

Now don't go away again! Back to your palette! Appease the masses you have inspired *rhubarbrhubarbrhubarb* ... :)

That chart's p. damned awesome, fausti. I used to do some drawing, and it has some solid pointers. Besides making me curse at the ectomorph picture and mutter, "goddamnit, body."
