Casting for Melisandre and Stannis has been announced.

Dunno the actress playing Mel, but the guy playing Stannis absolutely killed it as Thomas Jefferson in HBO's JOHN ADAMS mini-series. He doesn't have the look (or the star-power) of many of the other names that were bandied about (though I don't think he looks UNlike Stannis) but if acting ability is our primary measure here, those of you that haven't seen the JA miniseries take my word for it, this guy's damn good.

Carice is an awesome actress (and apparently, also a great personality, one of my friends knows her fairly well through his work). Classically schooled actress and one of Holland's finest both in movies and on stage. She starred in Black Book, and had a role in Valkyrie.

Not sure I like how the guy fits Stannis' face. Doesn't seem stern, and his eyes are more puppy eyes.

I think they have the right looks.
Ultimately it's going to come down more to performance than anything else, but after watching the actresses playing Dany and Cersei both go from phoning it in to absolutely killing it in S1, i have faith.

And let's face it, no one is going to match Peter Dinklage for sheer awesome. ;)

Jaqen has been cast, and IMO, this guy has an absolutely perfect look for the part. I'm not one to whine overly much over minor aesthetic changes, but if I could pick one detail I feel very strongly about, oddly enough, it's Jaqen's hair. I really, really hope they go with the half-red, half-white thing.

btw, Nonso Anozie as Xaro Xoan Doxas... I was under the impression that Qarthians were pale as milk, was I wrong?

You're not wrong, it looks like they're overhauling that for the show. Which does seem a little strange, but then again, it was never clear to me why the Qarthians were the palest folks we've seen when they live in a Dorne-like climate.

GRRM posted a casting clue on his LJ which has subsequently been pretty convincingly decoded at WiC.net. It seems pretty clear that this guy is Roose Bolton:

UPDATE: Aaaaand, it's official. From GRRM: "Congratulations, all. Or rather, some. You've solved another one. It's the distinguished Irish actor MICHAEL MCELHATTON. He will indeed be playing pale-eyed Roose Bolton, Lord of the Dreadfort."

The most recent casting that someone (I've forgotten who) posted in a different thread seems to be rather good, to me. the only problems I have is why even bother changing Asha's name to Yara? That just seems a but silly to me. Also, Alton Lannister -- not too sure why they're making up new characters; if he does kind of replace Cleos Frey, as the article suggests...well why not just cast a Cleos Frey instead?

There's just no way they can present the rest of the books in a TV format. So we should take for granted that characters and storylines will be shuffled and condensed to accomodate a 10 hour series.

Glad to see Liam Cunningham getting the part of Davos, he does understated and "simmering" better than anyone else. He is always excellent and a perfect choice.
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.

They changed Asha's name because of Osha. Not defending the name "Yara" though.
