Thing is, with metal armor (Hound/Mountain duel), you can actually take quite a few blows on your armor. Plate armor is basically sword proof. I'd have to watch it again, but IIRC, the Hound/Mountain duel where both are in heavy armor, everything get's blocked by the sword. It makes it look a bit fake.

In the Ned/Jaime duel, none of them has metal armor. Every hit by the sword will do some damage. So you really have to block everything with your sword. In exchange, you'll be moving faster. Now this only works if you swing much much tighter than these guys were doing. Ned in particular was swinging very widely. Maybe it's the huge sword he has which is really not suited for this kind of fighting.

Look for instance at this or similar links. If you're a bit of a fantasy/sword and sorcery geek, this stuff could be interesting. (No I don't LARP).

For armors... I wore this armor and fought against it. With dull weapons, it still hurts like hell if you got hit in joint or spin. With claymores like their, you can easily dent it or rip through if you are strong enough. It saves you from being sliced into two pieces, but...not from get penetrated skin...flesh...bone...:( And both were helmetless, it looked very real for me:)

It was great episode, but one thing pretty froze me:

After Ned was backstabbed she mused "I think he will got from that like its scratch, doesnt he? They cant put him out of scene for long"
Jesus, I made my best poker face ever. Really.

Just to clarify, for my part, I suppose it was less the scene that I thought was too feminine and more just the actor playing Ser Loras, upon further reflection. My visualization may have been off on him - I realize he's young, slender, and more than a touch effeminate in the books. But for all that I always pictured him as much, much more masculine. The actor taking him on has a bit of a creepy Twilight/True Blood vibe, IMO.

Ah I getcha. I think that has more to do with the POV stuff...we only see either of them in public, basically, and passing as hetero -- and then from the POVs of people (besides Jaime) who assume they are straight men. So when they're alone, the freedom of intimacy is a relief. Even hetero dudes tend to get a lot softer when they are alone with their girlfriends/wives. It's kinda funny, like when you hear a dude's voice go up a few octaves when they're talking to their girl over the phone -- so it's probably more general primate-y behavior than a gay/straight thing. Anyway, I thought it was actually a pretty sweet scene, despite all the backroom scheming stuff that permeates all of King's Landing.

As long as they play it as a genuine secret like it is in the books, and not an open secret, I think it will fit the narrative in a genuine way. Though the fact that LF recognizes it in the show and kinda mocks it adds a potential wrinkle that isn't in the novels, I don't think, but it makes sense he would pick up on it.

Among other things, it'll definitely add a new layer of interesting-ness around the bit where Littlefinger rides out of King's Landing to barter the deal with the Southron host after Renly's death to come through the Kingswood and relieve the siege during the Battle of the Blackwater (with Loras posing as Renly in his armor no less) if they choose to show that exchange.

Question for those who know...how long do these episodes usually take to show up on torrent? My cable provider doesn't allow for HBO GO so I won't be able to use it to watch episode 7 and there's no way in hell I am waiting a week.

How do they not allow HBO GO? If your a subcriber it just goes on your PC I thought.

There are only 8 cable providers that currently let you sign up for HBO GO. These are probably the 8 biggest ones, but I have a small local provider and none of the big ones are available where I live.

So I assume that the torrent I see for episode 6, that was put up near the end of April, is fake?

I think the first six episodes were released to critics and so on as screeners. However, it's unlikely those are widely distributed. I have no idea about torrents. I will legally watch this and probably buy the shizz out of the dvd.

Which reminds me, I have to get the last three seasons of The Wire. Already saw the entire run and loved it. Hopefully I can find a sale somewhere.

I know you are not watching it atm - personally I don't have that strength of will. Furthermore, the show will probably not be bought by dutch tv-stations, so the dvd box will remain a fringe item here in NL that has no huge market gravitating towards it because of television exposure.

That means it will be at the least around 50 euros or so by the time it will finally be sold here in the Netherlands, which I expect to be around christmas at its earliest, if not even later (to compare: TrueBlood was aired here, and the season 1 box still is € 30,-).
Ordering online adds shipping costs.

So, yeah, once it is released, I will definately buy it to compensate for torrenting the series, but right now, well, I'm not going to wait ages for something I maybe can't purchase anyway.

Poor Jory...

I really liked this episode, had a lot of good scenes in it - Varys sparring with Littlefinger, Renly & Loras and especially Robert & Cersei, to name a few. I didn't find the Hound & Mountain fight all that clumsy. Wasn't nearly as cool as Ned & Jaime or Bronn kicking ass, but still pretty damn awesome. Arya is still as adorable as ever. 'What were you doing in the dungeons?' '...I was chasing a cat.' Shame we didn't see any Jon or Dany, but there'll be plenty of action from them soon enough.

I've gotta say, this is one of the most brilliantly casted TV shows I've ever seen (probably includes films as well). Everyone pretty much has their role down to a tee, and I don't dislike anyone at this point (apart from those who I'm supposed to, like Joffrey). Lyza was just as crazy as I pictured her in the books, and Robin just as creepy.

By the way, having not read the books in a while is quite the bonus. I don't get annoyed at all the changed details (although I want more Syrio on screen, dammit!), and even though I know the overall arc of the series, little things like the fight that occurred at the end of this ep are almost new to me, so I'm glad I didn't do a re-read before this came out.

It was Jaime being smart and economical - he still had Ned to fight, after all :)

I liked it that Jaime was upset about what his guard did. It was supposed to be an honorable duel damn it.

Hey Tapper, have you tried a website like Play.com? I used to order stuff from them online when i was living in Ireland, and it was cheap and arrived pretty quick. And the postage was free if remember correctly.
I just did a quick search on the site for True Blood as an example, and Season1 is 15 euro, Season2 is 22.50 euro, and Season3 is 35 euro.
Looks like they do deliver free to the Netherlands, and it takes between 7-10 days.

hope this helps.

Watched it last night.

Holy shiznits! That was an amazing ep....best yet by far.

Ned and Varys talk was nicely done, and then Varys and Littlefinger's "I can one up you" convo was spot on awesomeness for each character.

The more I see of scenes that aren't in the books, I REALLY like what they are doing with them.

Like the Loras and Renly shaving scene. I mean why not fully reveal they a gay at this point? It's eluded to so many times in the first like 50 pages of A CLASH OF KINGS anyways (mostly by cranky Stannis), there's no reason not to reveal it....plus as someone said upthread it really solidifies Renly's position in ACOK....and will add that much more weight to Brienne's blind lusting after him in the second season. Nicely done. I didn't find Loras to be overly feminine actually...I found him to be a dude still, just one that likes to go downstairs on other men...and likes them to be shaven when he does it. A good scene that I think will serve the characters well, and HBO is definitely playing the slurpy BJ category, what with Tyrion's intial scene with Roz and now this one. Apparently in WEsteros they like their BJ's messy. LOL

Bran and Maester Luwin going over his lessons while Theon practices was nicely don. Luwin and Bran especially in fact. Bran's bored reciting of the houses and their sigils and words was great!

I agree that Robert and Cersei's scene was the very best. The chat almost has this edge to it where I keep expecting Robert to get angry and freak on her or say something nasty...but he never does. Both actors are killing it at this point, especially Headley.

Tyrion and Catelyn's scene in the mountains of the moon was amazing, as was the battle that followed with Tyrion's bashing the head of that dude with a shield. A nice sword fight indeed overall and a nod to Catelyn's understanding of the fact that it likely wasn't Tyrion who sent after Bran.

The Mountain cutting the head off the horse....dude...holy shit. LOL Then the fight with the Hound was perfect! I also agree with upthread that the best bit is when Sandor kneels missing that final blow. So great!

That scene with Illyrio and Varys (it was totally Varys) was nice as well, it shows not only Balerion's dragon skull, but gave us a look at the machinations going on behind the scenes between the two continents.

Ned and Jaime was...SO well done. I actually picked up the book afterwards and read Ned's chapter for that scene and both character's dialogue is nearly exact (I think the balls to brains comment was added only), and the fight itself was great, those two Stark guards die in seconds and Jory (whose death in the books Ned does not witness as he is too busy having been knocked down) dying in the way he did and the look on Jaime's face. Just awesome, as was the sword-hilt punch to the Lannister guard who speared the back of Ned's leg. Just all very true to character across the board, and even Littlefinger's defense of Ned was spot on.

The Eyrie was...just as effed up as I thought it would be...and that included Lysa and little Robert...um, I hope her boob was a fake...just cause...ewww.

In fact, is there anything in this episode that I didn't like? So amazing...and for an episode that didn't include fan faves like Dothraki scenes and scenes at the Wall....just brilliant.

Cannot WAIT for ep 6 now. ...and it's titled The Golden Crown, so Viserys..your time has come!

See how great it is when you cut out Lord Snow and the Dany and insert some Bronn instead.
