Also thought it was a bit of a dull start. I liked the Edur parts, but the whole Letherii thing was kind of boring me a bit. Then I slapped myself, started reading like a maniac, and must admit - it shot to be my favorite so far (even though it's hard to pick a real favorite among the malazan books). The characters are fantastic, the plot twists even better. SE really went all out in this one in exploring the deep seeded emotion in the characters as well as doing a wonderfull job on critiquing the faults of a intensely capitalist society.

I just finished MT. While it does start off a bit slow (though never boring), by the end you will have suffered a whirlwind of emotions and "convergence" on par with MOI. Honestly, I fell in love with half-a-dozen new characters; this really is an awesome series, and I am continually impressed by how skilfully Erikson can introduce an entire new set of characters, and have the reader come to care about them by the halfway point.

You have to remember that MT is set on a different continent. Both GOTM and DG start of a bit slower because they build a new continent. Its alot to take in sometimes when your half way through a series and the author transports you away from your favorite characters and your comfort zone and builds a whole new world. Thats all MT is and it to Eriksons credit that its probably one of his better books if not his best.

As Kierkegaurdian says it well worth sticking with

hi guys,

The lure of the brilliance of Steven Erikson made me start MT much earlier this year than I planned (I was going to wait and read the new Pat Rothfuss book first) but i couldnt wait that long so I began MT last week and am currently 125 pages through...

First of all Im a big SErickson fan but i am finding the start of this book quite slow...perhaps due to being set in a different time and location than the prevous 4 installations

did anyone else find this to be the case?

Im assuming the story picks up at some point yeh??

Cheers

I just finished and it was my fav book so far (halfway through NoK). The start is slow but Tehol and Bugg quickly became my fav two characters in the series. Their banter had me laughing out loud when I was reading on the beach. People were giving me strange looks. Anyway, stick with it, you will be rewarded.

If you find yourself drudging through MT, Tehol and Bugg shall be your saviors. Their outright comedy balances so much of the serious Edur storyline and makes the overall book much more enjoyable, in my opinion.
