Thanks, fixed it. Separated wires, crimped and wrapped with heat shrink. And it works! Floor is warm again. Just got to stick down the tiles I pulled up to fix it.

Got a nice oak windowboard for the kitchen, need to cut that to fit and then tile around it. It looks great. Kitchen is now looking like a jigsaw puzzle with only the last few bits missing. Its so nearly there, but needs those last bits to complete the picture.

I think when it's done I'll probably sit in it and cry. I've done the whole thing, barring the worktop fitting, myself. I'm not a plumber, electrician, carpenter, tiler or decorator, and it's taken months as I have no spare time around kids and work. I think I'll feel pretty proud when it's done.

Finished up a trailer refurb at the weekend.
took entirely too long but I've had no time at all with work in London, the apartment, the range and two houses I'm wiring. Realistically I'd say this should have taken me three days (it was no where near as bad as my last one) which would have meant a decent return on investment. I'm slowly trying to get myself set so that I can start doing more of this and less site work.

I have to confess I don't really know what I am doing.


The wood is cedar. I selected it based on the fact that it is local and relatively affordable, and also because I learned in school that the local tribes used cedar extensively to make their traditional food vessels and feast platters. It seemed appropriate.

For the finish, I went to the hardware store and selected something that was labeled as "Butcher Block Oil and Finish", figuring if it was meant for cutting boards and salad bowls, it would be reasonably food safe.

I did most of the plaster boarding myself, a bit of help from a mate for the ceiling.
Got a man into do the taping and jointing, and got a man in to do the painting and plumbing. pretty much everything else has been all me, with a bit of help from Mum and Dad and occasionally a mate or two.

Finished the shower and fitted the lino in the Bathroom at the weekend. Should have gotten more done but had a lot of stuff going on.

Ordered myself a thicknessing planer today as well. I've wanted one for a while so I can mill my own lumber.

But need to get my workshop built first.
Need to get the garage cleared out to get the crap stacked in my workshop first, so I can build my workshop.

I have nothing cool to show. I've spent the last few weeks running electrical in our unfinished basement in my spare time.

smash cut to 6 months later.

We moved in just before christmas. At that stage we had a basically finished bedroom and bathroom. and that was about it.

between a lot of other stuff going on and work and bla bla bla, its sow going trying to do little bits and pieces only at weekends and the like, and we have to have a life together as well!

but this last 2/3 weeks I've been off work, and it happens to be sowing season on the farm, so I've had to help dad out here and there on some stuff, and I'm doing all the running for errands for the family during lockdown, the shopping etc.

but I've logged some time at the apt, and Ive got a start on my workshop.

work on the apt will stall after today (I have 3 drawers to make and a list of little silly things to tidy up) as I need to finish the workshop to have a space to make the butchers block counter top and our kitchen table, the cramped garage just wont cut it.

but I got the last of the kitchen units mounted to the wall last night. bear in mind this is just the carcasses, the frames and doors will be made int he workshop as well.

carcasses all made from lacquered furniture grade 15mm baltic birch ply, easy to work with and a lovely smooth finish for inside cupboards and drawers. the sinks are into a temporary counter amde from inch ply, finished with about 4 coats of osmo.

I've been giving it more consideration and want to go beyond the minimum. I really want to make a statement. I've been taking inspiration from GTA V heist face fashion and RDR 2 bank/train robbery options.







I think I might go with full on heist Balaclava option though.

Dayuum! I just checked and I have a drawer in a bottom dresser with more old t-shirts than I would ever need to DIY some serious face protection. Hell, if I run out of toilet paper, I know I'll be good to wipe my ass to boot. Bring it on extended quarantine! I'm ready to bunker in place for months!

We've finally gotten the workshop pushed to a stage where we can start on the kitchen counter tops in it.

i'll take a few pictures tomorrow. got the Beech lumber broken down into manageable lengths yesterday and milled today (jury still out on if our milling was clean enough, I might build a little sled and run it again, we don't have a jointer, just a thicknesser)
Need to make a jointing jig tomorrow as well to get a nice straight edge to reference off as well. Seriously considering going for a cast iron topped table saw as an upgrade from my little evolution for the ripping process. We're going butchers block for the counter top so having an utterly shite fence and light flexible table top is a liability for doing the square cuts.
