Truth. Doesn't quite jive with what we heard from Hetan either, with her "being in awe at what Steve has managed to encompass." I somehow have faith that Pat will find a lot more answers in the latter portion of tCG than he's been led to believe in the first portion, but that's just my gut - I'm not the one who's read 300+ pages. For my part, though, this thread has sealed it for me - I'm going AWOL for a bit, both to avoid spoilers like the plague, and to avoid any more advance opinions. Much as I want to hear what people have to say, I also want to come to the final volume with as fresh a slate as I can. Cheers all!

Yeah, "pretty good" won't do for the last book in a series of 10. The stakes are high.

But then I have learned to have trust in Erikson and usually have the opposite reactions of other readers, including Malazan fans. So whether Pat says the book is awesome or crap won't make a difference for me. I'm definitely curious, though, and would like to hear more from Pat about how he *feels* about the book instead of teases about plot. Tell us your reactions in regard to a story that reaches its culmination.

The "danger", imho, is in the feel that Erikson spared something. An idea of incompleteness would hurt the book. The need to read some kind of epilogue written by Esslemont to figure out basic elements of plot would hurt the book. Same for secrets deliberately kept hidden just to fuel more books. If there's the "feel" that Erikson deliberately pulled something in order to push some sequel would definitely hurt this series as a whole and for the following years.

You just can't spare and pull punches if you're writing and motivating a so huge work like this. It needs to be closed and the closure needs to be as complete and resolute as possible.

These being all objective elements, then there's the personal reaction.

In any case, every word in that book needs to be incandescent and indispensable.

Keep in mind, Pat is the same person who flat out loved GGK's Under Heaven - which I thought was merely passable.

Tastes are individual. I respect Pat's, but he and I don't see eye to eye on books that often.

I keep wondering what's happened to Felisin Younger -- the last we saw of her seemed to be the set up for something sinister, though she hasn't had a mention since God knows what book.

The question is does she appear in TCG or has she disappeared into the, uhh...Abyss?...

well this certainly chimes with hetans opinions on the fella. i think we can say for certain we know of three scenes that will be in tCG. the butterflies/snake excerpt from SE's life as a human, the cotillion/edgewalker "what do you think you're seeing here" bit, and then there's yedan and the dragons...

Yeah I read this topic and was suprised what was in it, I think a few things said should have been spoiler tagged, since I(and I'm sure a few others, seemingly you as well) am quite happy having no definite idea where Paran is/isn't. I like hearing ideas, not actual facts from future books.

There's nothing in this thread that can be classed as a spoiler.
You don't know from what Pat has posted if he's just messing with your groove or not.
I'll keep an eye on the stuff that gets posted and deal with anything that is not appropriate.

I posted a thread on the short extract I found on Pat's blog...a poem from the end of The Crippled God. Now the thread appears to have disappeared? Anyone know what happened to it?

Yes. It was removed at SE's request. 'nuff said.

I tend to dislike threads that turn into people saying this should or should not be spoiled/pulled or whatnot. I certainly don't think that us speculating on where Paran is and Pat coyly not answering is anything but good old fashioned fun so I can make it through another day until I get a copy of the Crippled God in my hand.

BUT when the boss says it needs to get pulled there is not much the peons can do about it. RAFO.

Sincerely

Can't say anything about Paran...

But I do know that he isn't anywhere near Kolanse or Assail... :p

/EXPLODES ... just as he thought he was working out whats happening..

/Explodes again as his internet cuts out trying to go to the next page..

And in between combusting, wonders if Paran somehow hooked up with Karsa somewhere'to kill a god'...

Is still as confused at the beginning of the thread... :p

Obviously they're on that continent when "Goats of Glory" takes place.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

As I've been telling you since RG, Hetan, you're no fun! :p

Making sure that spoilers don't get around is one thing. But preventing me from messing with the minds of everyone here, surely there is no call for that!

Some of the best fiction is when Evil (Darkside Pat with his hints/not hints) meets Evil (Overlord Hetan of Ever erasable spoiler pen) and they battle each other while the good guys (serfs like me) laugh and are glad we are not in the way.
