It is easier to pick a favourite from this book as the Fiddler and Kalam are absent.

Iktovian's story is fantastic and contributed a lot to my enjoyment of the book. The character himself is just too extreme to relate to and, therefore, is not my favourite.

I have to go for Picker in this book. She represents the Bridgeburners' point of view for this story and helps bridge the gap between the fantastic powers of the ascendants and the gritty reality of the 'common' soldier.

I love Paran! He's probably my favorite character of the whole series. I also like Crotus and Cotillion even though I don't think that they are in MoI.

Kallor. Second would be Itkovian.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Recently finished reread and changing my vote to Kallor.

The only character with a bigger ego than QB! Deadpan, sarcastic and doing remarkably well for a guy with 3 gods curses on him.

Cotillion has to have it for me, overall. His humble attitude to godhood is interesting, normally gods are aloof, megalomaniacs or reluctant; it seems clear that Cot wants to be a God but wont abuse his position. Also, he has the coolest fighting style ever. For MoI particularly probably Kallor as he is a true badass.

Kruppe
Quick Ben
Fiddler

The atmosphere of the Bridgeburners, a lot of banter, people making fun of each other, funny things like that.

One thing I admire is, for some reason, most of the squads in the Malazan empire are half insane/dysfunctional family, yet they seem to all do their jobs exceptionally well. Whenever the sappers and engineers are running around doing things is always funny, since they are all nutjobs.

Kruppe! This sly nutjob is the top. Nearly coughed up a lung laughing at some of his antics. Tehol (from Midnight Tides... is this thread specific to MOI?) and Ganoes Paran would both be vying for second place...

More or less in order and limiting myself to 5... :)

Whiskeyjack
Spoiler

Quick Ben
The Master of the Deck
Anomander Rake
Fiddler

I love so many characters in the series. The only ones I truly despised were Kallor and Felisin. But Kallor was brillinatly written without question, I just can't stand him because, as Brood says, "You never learn." Felisin IMHO might be the only flawed major character in the series. She just never made sense to me. Why that is, of course, is better served in another place. But since she does appear in DH, I included mention here.

T'ool is definitely a must, as well as Toc, Lady Envy, the Seguleh, and Bruhkalian, as well as the whole gang of Bridgeburners... The way Bruhkalian went out... Truly epic. It gave me goosebumps.

It makes me mad that Bruhkalian doesn't get more respect. He sacrificed himself. He knew it was coming...

'I am the Shield Anvil.' I am Fener's grief. I am the world's grief. And I will hold. I will hold it all, for we are not yet done. <Itkovian>
'We are not born innocent, simply unmeasured.' <Hull Beddict>
'Because a god visits her, Fist. He comes to break her heart. Again and again.'<Nether>
'Fucking dragon.' <Fiddler>
Take my breath. But not this one, not this one. <Apsalar>
'Aye.' It's a good word. I think. More a whole attitude than a word, really. With lots of meaning in it, too. A bit of 'yes' and a bit of 'well fuck' and maybe some 'we're all in this together.' So a word to some up the Malazans. <Sunrise>

I'd have to say Toc the Younger, closely followed by WhiskeJack, Quick Ben, Lady Envy and Paran.  Hmmm...this is harder than I thought...Itkovian, Tool, Gruntle, the two Necromancers, Rake, Brood and last but not least Kruppe.  Hey, this Erikson guy has come up with some pretty good characters.

Having just finished this book after reading Gardens of the Moon (Deadhouse Gates has been ordered as it is not present in Whakatane), I must say that although the series does not have the vertical depth of GRRM's Ice and Fire, the characters are fantastic.  I admit to missing the Bridgeburners who did not make it.  They grew on me.  The same goes for the tragic Grey Swords and even that little guy that survivied Capustan with Gruntle only to get chopped to pieces.  Greatness is not measured solely by the leads, but also by the strength of the supporting characters.  Anyways, this is only the second series for which I have taken enough interest to join a forum (Ice and Fire being the other).  Good to read the comments.  Geez almost forgot Hetan, Cefal and co.
