A search didn't turn up the old Bakker thread, so sorry if this belongs there. Just something that struck me after finishing a reread of the first 3 books.
Why did Moenghus leave Ishual in the first place? The entire plot of the books turns upon this event, and yet, I either have completely forgotten the reason for his exile, or it was never explained.
Help?

I think it was something like they sent him out to get some information on the world, to see how close they were to completing their goals. But Moenghus ran into other humans and they decided he had been contaminated basically so he was exiled.
Then later he sent the dreams to Kellhus and the Dunyain realized Moenghus was a threat to them that needed to be dealt with.

So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Actually, I didn't.
It seems you stand alone.
It was ever thus.

Having finished the first 3 books, I can only speculate.
Moenghus SEEMED to go out into the world to learn magic, something the Dunyain lacked. But I honestly could not tell you.

Sranc came upon Ishual and though were obviously slaughtered by the combined might of the entire dunyain order it was decided it was necessary to send a monk out into the world to assess how likely it was that further incursions and discoveries of Ishual were. They sent Moenghus.

What Cause said. Then when he returned the Dunyain decided that he had been contaminated and exiled him. The rest we all know.

OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.
