I'm with Abyss on this one (sorry Apt) Superman is an alien god. The threats he's called on to battle should be of equal stature. Superman 2 is a better film than Superman entirely because the threat he faces is equal to him. Huge property grabs by Lex Luthor leave me a bit cold.

One of the many things Nolan got right with his treatment of the psychology of Batman was the tension between the identities. He saw, correctly, that The Batman was the person that the child who saw his parents murdered in an alley grew up into and that Bruce Wayne is the disguise. It's the opposite way with Superman; the Clark Kent who grew up on the farm in Kansas is the real person whereas Superman, the vastly powerful and benevolent alien god is the disguise. An interesting emotional arc for the film would imo be him coming to terms with that; Nature vs Nurture if you will....

Give me somebody like Bizarro, Braniac, Darkseid or Mongul in the new movie and I'll be happy. Notice that all of these are also alien gods, but they're the antithesis of Superman - they throw the humanity that Kal-El has learned into sharp contrast.

I'm not much of a comic book reader, so I might be a bit off I guess, but my impression is that Clark Kent the journalist is the alter ego. Clark Kent of the farm is perhaps his true self while Superman is whom he feels he should be.

It's the other way around with Superman Morgoth. People like Batman or Spiderman, have to put on a mask and take on a personality to become the superhero. Superman doesn't hide he is always there, he has to put on a pair of glasses and act like a dork to pretend that he is a human.

He just wants to fit into society, but in reality he is a god.

Again I'm going to have to disagree with you Apt. As I said, the person Superman thinks he really is is Clark Kent. That's who he was raised to be. The persona of Superman is how Clark Kent does the things he thinks he should his power for. Superman only exists because he allows Clark Kent to the things he can't do as Clark Kent.

Although, as in most things, it's a matter of interpretation; which has changed over the years. But iirc the one most writers put on it nowadays is the one I've detailed.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Well, I've only ever read my dad's old superman comics form the sixties and Red Son. My impression is that Superman makes Clark Kent more ridiculous in order for him not to be connected to Superman. It's not as much the glasses as the way he acts, his clumsiness etc. It's clearly an act so I can't see how one could argue that the Clark Kent of the newspaper is whom he really is.

I think, although I could be wrong (interpretation again) that both of them are disguises in some way. But Clark Kent, the decent midwestern farmboy, is more who the character sees himself as. The alien god, Superman, is what he uses to get things done.

But one could argue that as superman he can be more himself than as dorky news guy clark kent.
Because he does not have to hide as much as superman than what he does as Clark.

Didn't someone post something a while back about how Supes hides himself from the world at large as a bumbling idiot (in the classic milieu) because he has contempt for humanity? I don't necessarily agree with it, but it was interesting to read at the time.

That may have been true for the Silverage superman, but I don't see it as true anymore.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

@dkt
Huh, there you go. How come I don't remember that from the film? Then again, my memory is notoriously poor for details. :D

@Primateus
Hence my ref as it being from classic Superman, not contemporary. :(

That was exactly the interpretation I was thinking about. Weird, I thought I'd read it in an article originally, but this is definitely it.

Of course, Bill here, is drawing his own conclusions about Supermans character. And you can argue about what kind of person Superman is, but the classic superman of old, fits this perfectly.

As long as Snyder doesn't make him into the whiny teen angsty pansy boy of Smallville I will be happy...

AND....

Hans ZImmer is doing the score

Quote

Zack Snyder's SUPERMAN will not be carrying over John Williams's iconic main theme, first heard in Richard Donner's 1978 film and resurrected for Bryan Singer's 2005 continuation. Snyder has instead enlisted Hans Zimmer to score his top-down reinvention of the DC Comics superhero.

great move

If they want to reinvent the character they are going to have to do it from the bottom up...starting with a new score.
Any nod to the Christopher Reeve era SUPERMAN films would be confusing and provoke unwanted nostalgia when ithe idea is to establish a clean break from the previous iteration.

Agreed - it's needs to be a reinvention and not a remake. Like there was no hint of the "NANANANANANANANANANA BATMAN!" or whatever in Nolans films about him...

tbh - I wouldn't even bother trying to catch up on the history of an 80 year old character. If you want to read what I would say is the distilled essence of Superman, I'd recommend you have a look at All Star Superman. Not only are they brilliant Superman comics, they're just brilliant comics period.

Nice. She's got the spunk to be Lois and the acting chops to not have it suck. Kate Bosworth was so awful!
