According to HO's buddy (the guy currently hosting the server) we should be up and running by end of day.

The server has just gone down. If the world isn't back up in 5 hours I'll restart the Minecraft session then.

Minecraft update - 1.3.2 is now live, clients should auto-update and server is at 1.3.2.

Updates are:

Large Oak Trees now generate with sideways logs.
You can now toggle showing server addresses in the server list using the F1 key

Bug fixes:
Fixed players sometimes falling out of the world when entering the Nether after having been there before in the same session[1]
Fixed players taking damage when water pushes them into corners
Fixed various uncommon crash bugs

How do you place sideways logs/?

How not to is my current problem when building wooden pillars. Basically place a log on the side of another block.

seems to have something to do with your position relative to the block you're placing it upon, and which block you actually click on. (like when it's surrounded by several blocks). I haven't been able to discern the pattern.

What do you think about the closed communication effect? I think it's pretty much the most important aspect of that game. Closed communication means that self-interest rules, and the self always seems to believe they need more resources than they really do. Also, knowing somebody else has got farming/food supply under control frees up your worry and need for hoarding in that department.

I bet if we did a similar experiment on a smaller map suited to the number of players we regularly have on, we'd do a much better job of avoiding the pitfalls seen in the closed world experiment.

I would think that in that situation, tree farming would pretty much be like the most important thing ever.

Done. Be sure when you're on next to get a TP out to the new continent. Strictly survival mode out there but there's lots of room to build nearby to the central area.

I keep dying in senseless ways far from home, losing my kit and never being able to get back to it. I feel like a noob. Spider from above knocks me into the lava, haul is lost. Skellie shoots me into a hole, spider jumps on me, etc. Then I get bumped into by an ENderman while moving into a dark cavern and placing torches. What did I do when bumped? Reflexively attack...bad idea. Next, I found 3 Enderdicks in the same spot together. Wisely, I avoided them, only to have one TP directly in front of me, attacking instantly, and I couldn't run fast enough, then I had to ragequit.

Yeah, I already did that whole dying constantly bit... except for me it was usually being blown up by creepers, which did damage to anything I was near.

I had a moment the other day trying to take out a cave spider spawner where i died 30 times in about 3 minutes. I had a bed near and kept charging in trying to recove my kit. It was ugly.

Those cave spiders are out of control. I've had really good success using lava buckets to chop back the webs and push back spiders until I can plop a torch on the spawner.

Even if you're careful they're still fucking hard to kill. Only saving grace is that the spiders hang up badly on the wooden tunnel supports so you can usually retreat to recover health and wait out poison.
