I'm the minimalistic type. Just use some glass and stone to make a little light house raised above the ground.

But you could also go crazy and fashion a claw holding a glass pearl.

Hey guys, thinking about building a tower at my spawn point, so I spawn inside a warm and cozy tower. Plus it gives me an extra place to stash valuables and act as a base, since my mountain complex is a decent walk away and I think I see an underwater cave system that I missed when first scouting. How do you recommend I go about building it, cos I've tried to build one, and it just looks crappy.

Use the circle plots Apt posted somewhere in this thread as a guideline if you want to make anything circular or pseudo-circular - makes it look a lot better.

I've collected a lot of useful information on the first page amongst other things the circle diagram.

In other news, my mountain on the server is coming along nicely. When I logged on today the one of the tree's planted on my mountain top had mutated and eaten up my half finished logo.

Ah, fuck. Tunneled my way into a whole room of creepers. Boom goes the dynamite! I wonder if the creepers (there were about 5) set off a chain reaction in their cave? Gonna go check. Think I lost a diamond pick though...sigh. Oh well, everything else I had too much of (iron, coal, wood etc.)

How can you have too much of anything?!

I wonder what 'happens' when you've managed to mine up pretty much all of your world's ores and stuff. What happens then, are you just out of iron, for example, forever?

You would die of old age before you were able to mine up all the ore in a randomly generated world. Also your PC would probably die since the save file would be HUGE

Since the map is like multiple times the surface of the Earth, it would be an impossibly ambitious exercise to mine every single piece of ore. But I'm pretty sure if you mine everything away in your general area you would have to range further for your basic minerals, like coal and iron.

As for having too much, maybe I misspoke, but a couple of stacks of coal going down the drain for instance doesn't bother me in the slightest. I've got a whole double chest full of coal, and I think a whole chest of iron ingots.

I'm very glad (been off the forum for a bit) that somebody was able to get a SMP server up and running on occasion.

My computer did not work sadly. I tried but to no avail. It's just too shitty and old. Oh well.

In other news, death cave on my SP map is almost depleted. I've been using my patented advance-and-lock down method with immense success. I've also gotten in the habit of completely walling off previously explored (ie replacing the doors with stone) sections to minimize my time faffing about looking for the way home. If you wall-in previously explored stuff, it's pretty much a beeline between your storage locations and the front lines.

Funny enough, I've encountered almost zero diamond in this cave system. Damn near a small chest full of iron ore & coal, and 2-3 stacks of gold ore, but near nothing for diamonds. Too bad.

This thing has no bottom though. I spent 4 hours of playtime exploring the minor branch of the cave. I'm on the major branch now and have about 10 partial doored-off wall-ins off the main room, only 3 of which are fully explored. Im getting the uppermost reaches out of the way first, then it's on to the depths. Kinda getting tired of it though...Next project is going to be my castle on top of "home mountain"

Come play on the MP server. I'm all alone. Also I suspect that Morgoth sneaked over and sabotaged my mountain top last night.

I'm planning something like that, only bigger! Those circles are just drawings of the equal-distance-from-origin-in-pixels algorithm, you can extend it to as big as you like.

Indeed, but I'm too lazy to do that!

This is the perfect guide to building domes too...just look at 1/2 of the circle. Start by building 4 stacked 45 circles, then jump to 4 stacked 43 circles, then jump to a 41, and so on, following the pattern established by 1/2 of the 45 circle.

Cool. I'm going to do that.

I gotta build a wall of furnaces up in home mountain, cook some glass and start making a 45 dome under the sea.
