I'm sure the old girl can handle SP, but my internet connection is residential, and they aren't always best-suited to server-ing.

In particular, my UL speed is throttled pretty harshly compared to my DL speed, and there isn't really a good way to upgrade it cheaply.

Anybody know anything about server-ing that could comment or provide a helpful hint?

So this is pretty sweet.

Bad news. He didn't build that. He imported it from a different 3D model that he was working on.

So. Yeah. Don't feel so bad about your lesser creations.

sweet.

That computer is pretty low-power so I don't mind leaving it turned on for awhile.

Hopefully in the final release, there is an opportunity for private server-ing off the minecraft site. If it was cheap to set up a private server, that would ultimately be the best solution. Kinda like WoW.

I watched the video at the beginning. It looks kind of neat, but also.... can you get the real experience for free or is the $10 necessary to enjoy it? If so, I can read books for free instead.

You would have to buy those books first if you wanted to read them (and don't tell me you could read some you already own - how did you come to own then in the first place, eh? AYE! You bought them!), just as you would have to buy Minecraft if you wanted to play it.

Come back when you have a real arguement and/or nothing but praise for worshipful Minecraft!

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

@HD

It is the most fundamentally and absolutely "worth it" game I've purchased since Bioshock.

This game is fucking incredible and if you don't play it you are worse than dead to me.

there.

Here are some of my lovely beacons. I like to make em different for each hilltop so that I can keep track of where I am. This is taken on top of Volcano base. I really like taking an organic approach to my tunneling. No two balconies the same, few symmetric constructions. Tunnels linking it all inside the mountain.

This is my volcano base at night. It looks sweet. The 2 beacons you see in the background to the left are the ones from the picture above.

I don't have any pictures of Home Mountain yet. It's looking pretty awesome these days. More like something you'd see on the hollywood hills than a castle.

Man, I really wish I could keep my draw distance on normal all of the time so I can see the beautiful night sky more often. Stupid computer and it's stupidness. Maybe if I make the graphics unfancy....

Goddamnit! I knew you'd say that!

You can't create magificent structures whilst battling crazed zombies in the library, though!

@morgoth

No I didn't. I'll go back and read up on it later tonight.

I did just read this on minepedia

Apparently only classic (build only) has a stable MP mode. My thought was to set up a Survival Multiplayer, since that would be the ultimate thing. I'm not really interested in build-only since it eliminates all the fun roleplaying elements.

We can definitely try a classic-mode MP server in the meantime, since that will at least tell us if my computer is a candidate or not. I probably won't keep it running long, just enough to test it out with a few users.

Sound good?

From Minepedia:
===============================
Survival Multiplayer (SMP) is a game mode currently in development that is highly anticipated by the community. Many players have speculated on how gameplay will turn out once the mode is released. Speculated gameplay highlights include Player vs. Player (PvP), raiding parties, base defense mechanisms, and cooperative player towns.
Currently, the new game mode is under heavy construction and is very buggy. More information can be found on the Known Survival Multiplayer Issues page.

Originally, Notch has allowed several people from the Minecraft IRC channel to participate in the first tests of Multiplayer. The first tests were private. Notch then allowed invitees to invite other people; however the password was leaked and the server was quickly filled up. After that, anyone could get into the test server (when it was online) by typing a password that was shown on the multiplayer screen.

Notch released the first version of the server software on the 4th of August, 2010. The client was updated so that players could enter the IP of a server to join it. As of 10 September 2010, SMP now finally has a server side inventory, signs and chests. Furnaces have also been fixed to work almost correctly. However, Notch said it wasn't secure yet.

meh. Link was dead :(

also, I just fell into lava while mining diamond. Sufficient to say, I wouldn't mind a diversion from my own world right about now.

Just died at the bottom of a cave. I got swamped by monsters. In front of me was a couple of blocks of diamond and if I'm not mistaken, I could hear a slime. And I died. Damn it, I've never encountered a slime before!

I'm going to pause the game, take a break and then rush down there and see if I can recover my shit.
