Right, these books have a lot of stuff going on, and I sometimes feel it's almost intentional that you have a lot of light bulb moments on rereads.

I forgave myself for not remembering that it was the Ashok Regiment that detained Karsa at the beginning of HoC, things like that. But now that I'm on my third read through (second re-read) there's a couple of moments that I've been kicking myself over.

Yesterday's "revelation" was probably the worst, when I re-read the 'Ganoes kicks Poliel's arse' section in BH. Somehow on reads one and two, I managed to totally fail to notice that Brokenface guy was the one that Fid's horse mauls in DG. I hadn't even clicked that it was G'Danisban him, Crokus and Apsalar had traveled through. This is despite Soliel-possessed girl basically referring to the event in a clear, unambiguous way.

Here's the bit where you tell me you've managed to overlook obvious links just as bad. If there's no replies in 24 hours I'm going to the hospital to request a lobotomy.

Oh: I also managed to assume that 'Gral' in reference to Taralack Veed was some new race, despite the Gral tribe being mentioned about a thousand times in the series up to his introduction.

Haha, thanks for sharing that, I hadn't noticed that it was the same guy :D

I think I've been reading so much theory on the board that I've seen most stuff, but apperently not that minor part :)

i've currently on a re-read mission and just finished MoI, i think think the biggest thing i missed so far was the Matron that was sealing the wound at Morn, it was the Nah'Ruk who threw her in, had never even crossed my mind who would be powerful enough to through a Matron into the wound! It's only one sentance that reveals it... so easy to miss things!

You know how in Dust of Dreams it's revealed that pieces of the Crippled God landed on multiple continents? I thought that was so cool. It explained why there have been so many chainings, and like a lot of stuff in DoD it just plain blew my mind.

So I'm rereading GotM along with the Tor.com reread, and halfway through GotM there's this:

Chapter 12 said:

SE is sneaky.

More importantly, there are a LOT of little random comments made in the series that you don't realize foreshadow something until it happens, and you go back and read the foreshadowing. That is a huge reason I follow along with the Tor Re-read, it is awesome reading a first-timers perspective and stepping back into the shoes.

Three rereads and i STILL missed that.
...or else i saw it but forgot. MoI is info-heavy.

But there's SO MUCH in these books that it's hard to catch everything. tho i did catch the Brokeface/Gral horse ref yay me!

But there are a tonne of things i only caught on later re-reads, like the link between Rud and Shurq (both Mekros raised, both 'Ellale'), the fact that Crokus' uncle was a High Priest of D'rek, that the Ashok marines who caught Karsa were the same ones Kalam meets, that one of QB's souls is part Andii, that Mallet appears with the BB's in Kalyth's dream but isn't actually dead yet...

- Abyss, should re-title this thread to 'When Re-reads Attack!'...

Two things come to mind. I recently finished a reread on RotCG and it never occured to me that the ravaged soldier who, I believe it was Ullen, gives a passing thought to for having survived against Ryllandaras was Moss. This stuck with me because I remember my first read I was really interested in this unnamed soldier and annoyed he wasn't named. On my reread I put the rather obvious pieces together and there was my answer; hurray for me.
A more interesting bit is from when I was looking through HoC for quotes on the Unbound. There's this line where Urugal and Imroth are talking and Imroth says she's changing the child is Dayliss' womb. This is the only time it's mentioned that the Unbound have left behind a present for the Teblor tribes and I had completely forgotten.
It's these little things that we either miss or forget that make the rereads arguably better than the first.
The world needs hypocrites...unfortunate but true.

I only found out the Whirldwind Godess was Onrack's wife after my 2nd re-read of HoC...had a big FACEPALM moment. Also made a connection in my recent re-read of RG, there was mention of Gothos and his wife in a previous book, and RG revealed Icarium was part Toblakai.

Oh, and that whole bit in DoD with Icarium as a ghost, with Taxillian, Feather Witch, and all the rest, I didn't even know they were a part of his conscience. Massive OMGWTFBBQ moment.
Lives and loves, the gamut of existence was marked by such things. A breaking of paths, the ragged, uneven ever-forward stumble. Blood dried, eventually. Turned to dust. The corpses of kings were laid down and sealed in darkness and set away, to be forgotten. Graves were dug for fallen soldiers, vast pits like mouths in the earth, opened in hunger, and all the bodies were tumbled down, each exhaling a last gasp of lime dust. Survivors grieved, for a time, and looked upon empty rooms and empty beds, the scattering of possessions no-one possessed any longer, and wondered what was to come, what would be written anew on the wiped-clean slate. Wondering, how can I go on?

Are you sure about that? We don't know when exactly Brood decides to smash Dragnipur to pieces, only that it happens some time after the events of TTH.

I had this too. I totally forgot about the passage near the beginning of the book saying that there was a single figure walking across the wasteland talking to itself in multiple voices. Made me rage later about Icarium being in the Rooted pulled out of the ass. Very humilliating.

A nice little thing that I've found lots of people miss is in House of Chains. After Leoman's first strike against Tavore's army while it's marching on Raraku (the successful strike, where his warriors manage to trap like half the Malazan cavalry in a gorge and slaughter them), Keneb and several others survey the scene of slaughter - the dead soldiers and horses - and one unnamed captain remarks that this all reminds him of something he saw some years earlier...

Well, that unnamed captain is the very same unnamed captain as at the beginning of GotM, who goes with Lorn and Paran to look at remains of the cavalry regiment which the Hounds hit!

I love little touches like those in these books!

I wondered whether that was what was implied, because there are so many random veterans in the series who were at something significant, but i'm glad someone else thought this too.


I know most people catch this, but to this day i love the fact that the dead Edur Heboric and co find on the Silanda in DG are the result of Karsa taking the ship in HoC, even tho the HoC events take place earlier in the timeline (which does not matter).

Similarly the whole drowned/dead Edur in MoI that's explained in MT (the timeline does not matter the timeline does not matter the ) .

When Fiddler is escorting Apsalar and Crokus in DHG, they take the guise of a pair of newlyweds and their guide. Apsalar threatens to curse them by lifting her veil, and Fiddler is riding a Gral horse. The horse reacts to the soldiers' hostility and tears at the face of one of them, ripping off half the flesh. Fiddler has trouble with the horse, but it settles down and he thinks to himself that the horse is responding to him because he's acting appropriately, even if he's not actually a Gral.

The soldier that the horse attacks is Brokeface, whom Paran encounters in Dujek's camp.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.
