Brys is pretty much my second favourite character in MT, tied with the badassery that is Iron Bars and second to the awesomeness of Tehol and Bugg. But I can't seem to recall anything mentioned of just what exactly makes him Kings Champion. He's obviously worthy of the title, but what did he do to get it? It doesn't seem like he's been involved in any wars or military conquests.

Isn't being the greatest swordsman of the empire enough? :(

I reckon your thinking of the title Champion as being the same as First Sword of the Malazan Empire. To my mind a Champion is either an elite bodyguard, or the guy who represents the king in single combat.

Yeah you're right, I was thinking more in terms of First Sword. But that still leaves me wondering how he received the title of champion. Did Ezgara hold a giant tournament or something?

Brys mentions being a Finadd at one point so my guess is he joined the army and moved up in the ranks enough to catch the eye of someone of importance.

He also mentions another man, the "Prince's candidate for champion)...so my guess is the former Champion retired/died and various important people nominated a candidate.

Since the other candidate was still alive I have to assume there was no tournament, it sounds like the King was given a few choices and chose Brys

He invested a lot of Exp Points in "Swordsmanship". And here he is, the King's Champion :(

LMAO

Yeah well that makes sense. I really wish we could of seen more of him in action. Then again we may see him again. My favourite thing about Brys was how average and "modest" (as literally described by I believe Fear) he looked and acted. Such a humble killing machine. You look at the guy and think nothing of him, until he hacks you to pieces. Pretty much every other "champion" in the series makes you realize that you do not want to mess with them at first glance.

Yep, I love the way that Brys makes Rhulad look slow and clumsy by comparison. he is probably the finest/quickest mortal swordsman in the series.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

*cough* Dassem *cough* *cough* Seguleh 3rd *cough* Nefarias Bred*cough*

EDIT: Yeah, I know, it's tough determining whether or not Dassem is actually mortal...

I think Brys Beddict is probably among the top 5 swordmen of the series. The ease with which he took out Rhulad just goes to show how totally in control he is of his skill. I dont know about Dassem Ultor, as I have only read upto the Bonehunters and have seen him in action only once and that too briefly.
