Just finished ROTCG. Had a question about Tatterdemallion. That part where he fights off that female (don't know her name), and sends her into some sort of portal. They are overlooking some kind of vortex.

Might be missing something big here (probably am), but what the heck was the point of that scene. How does it relate to any part of the book? Does Tatter show up anywhere else in the book at all (don't think he does)? Can anyone shed some light here?

Thanks.

BTW, haven't read TTH yet, just starting now, so if the answers are spoilerish, please tell me so without spoiling!

This forum kicks some serious ass.

Tatterdamalion is Topper. Remember around DG or HoC it was mentioned that he was lost in the Imperial Warren?

The woman that he attacks and hides away is an unknown. But there are theories. Because of his comment that she fights like Dancer or something similar, some suspect that she is in fact Apsalar. How ever, no matter how good Topper was, or became, I don't believe he could have dispatched Apsalar that easily (More likely she would have kicked his head off).

There is no explanation for that scene. Maybe this is a setup for an event later in the series of books Esslemont is writing or maybe like a lot of the other storylines in RCG it has no meaning and seemingly leads no where. The book was very messy when it came to storylines.

From the way he wrote that part, I knew that we were supposed to know who Tatter was but I couldn't figure it out (likely because it had been so long since I read DG and HoC). Good to know who Tatter is--thanks!

Well that and the scene where he ambushes a Claw in the IW are just kinda there to setup that there's a crazy assassin in the IW, which explains why no one's using it. Otherwise it'd be massive Deus-ex when Topper just shows up from his missingness to save the day at the end.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

But what's with the crazy vortex they were looking at?

Why?
So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Actually, I didn't.

It seems you stand alone.
It was ever thus.

Powerhouse, Crimson Guardsmen, burned Sillanah and survived fight with Rake...OK, its not love, but interesting character (problem is that ICE made him two dimensional).

And I dont like Topper and Laseenīs Empire, so...:)

Food for thought:

tat·ter·de·mal·ion (ttr-d-mlyn, -ml-n)
n.
A person wearing ragged or tattered clothing; a ragamuffin.
adj.
Ragged; tattered.

Well, he's also called ragman or something at one point isn't he? I though of it like he'd made some kind of guili suit that allowed him to hide in the open among the ash and debris of the Imperial Warren. Probably helped him survive what ever monsters survive inside the warren.

I know this thread has been dormant for a bit but I just found it...I thought Tatter was 'asked' (no proof just feeling) to go into the warren and pretty much kill all the claws that went in by Laseen because she knew that so many of them had been turned by Mel. I thought that the girl was a Talon that was still kicking around (like Baudin and the ones that KD has in Bonehunters?) and was either using the IW or had infiltrated the Claw. That was the only way that "i haven't seen his style in a while" statement made any sense. And in the meantime Tops could focus and practice his craft cleansing his organization. The portal I figured was just Top using his warren to send her to an endless pit somewhere or something like that.

Yes, he is a half-blood.

Quote

"'The tall half-blood Tiste Andii seemed to be wearing the same clothes as the last time Paran had seen him: green wool, green leather. Only the countless rings spearing his long fingers showed any splash of contrary color.'"
