Soul-shifting was the thing he did to Hairlock in GotM.

maybe he's just good at hiding.... therfore good at changing his appearance....therefore a shapeshifter!
The snake reference could just be a term for how sneaky he is!
but I still think he's a soletaken though... but not necessarily a snake.
(most likely but not necessarily!!!!!)

When Amannas reffered to him as being a "shape shifting b*stard" I believe he was commenting on the fact thhat he has managed to evade Shadowthrone numerous times, always being out of reach.

Coor! Complete disregard for spoilers in this thread!
Anyway, in DG it shows that some soletaken are just as powerful (if not more powerful) than diivers.
As for the snake thing in MoI, one of Quick's 'souls' was a soletaken priestess. Maybe that's where his ability came from...don't recall of the priestess had anything to do with Tennes or if the witch is just that perceptive.

I dont think so - Quick Ben was talking to a God, and a God that obviously knew who he was. Dont you think he would have to be some kind of shape shifter at the very least just to stop the God noticing who he was?
About teh Soletaken/D'ivers thing, d'ivers have always (so far, Im nearly at the end of House of Chains) been listed as 'a higher order of shapeshifters'. What other orders function like this....hmmm..the mages!
Now, what must a mage do to become a 'High' mage rather than just a normal mage? It isnt just the conferring of the title, Quick Ben was obviously a hgih mage long before he was elevated to the position. It is a question of mastery and power, like with Tattersail, who was a master of her warren and could use High Thyr wards because she had the mastery for it, not because somebody told her she did.
I think Soletaken and D'ivers work the same way. Enough power must be obtained (through kiling I assume) to become a d'ivers rather than a Soletaken. Witness the rat d'ivers, I forget its name. Whilst it might have had the same power as Ryllandaras (the wolf one, I probably spelt it wrong) to start with, this power would need to be contained amongst sevceral rat bodies whereas Ryllandaras's power would be enough for a single Soletaken wolf.
I would have to asume that a certain amount of mastery (controlling all the individual bodies etc.) is necessary to become a d'ivers, as well as a certain amount of desire, but essentially to bcome a d'ivers is to master being a soletaken, as well as to obtain enough power. Rake obviously has great power, enough to turn into a dragon, but he would need a lot more power if he wanted to turn into multiple dragons - and I dont think he has the desire either. Anyway, thats my basic idea

I think the rat(s) was called Gryllen Malaz3. But do recall that soletaken bear that the Azath took was pretty powerful...and he was competing with both soletaken and diivers. Only the most powerful had made it through by then so I still believe that the power is separate from the 'order' of shifting. In other words, it may require more power to shift onto 2 entities for a diivers but a soletaken may attain twice its soletaken power and be equally as powerful as the 2 diivers.

i dont think its suggested anywhere that soletakens upgrade to d'ivers, not that it isnt plausible

This thread is really not for the GotM forum... I'll move it to House of Chains.

I finished re-reading MoI and I remember a conversation or two of Tool where he talks briefly of Soletaken and D'ivers, and their city the T'lan Imass destroyed. There is a reference towards the difference between the two iirc. Unfortunately I have no idea where in the book, so to find the passages...

Also, in reference to Quick Ben's Sorcery:-
GotM, UK PB edition, page 135
Normally a "spicy" flavour is associated with Soletaken/D'ivers. I'm sure there is a quote somewhere where Quick Bens sorcery is said to be "spicy" but this is the closest I could find.

The sorcery bled a strange, swirling flavour that she[Tattersail] could not recognize, and it frightened her with its intensity.
