Hello Loki.
Good to see you're happy.
You really should drop by more often.

Also I'd like to see you and MTS explain your differing points of view on this football team.

It's simple - you are either born with black and white running through your veins, thus a Collingwood supporter, or you hate them with every ounce of your being (a side effect of jealousy and ignorance) :p It's a significant part of Australian culture (whether you follow AFL or not, you can't deny that). Brood gets it - through his ignorance he chose to follow Essendon.....there's no saving some people.

After Collingwood won the Grand Final the ABS published stats that showed that 1 in 36 Australians supported Collingwood...1 in 36...we could rise up and take over if we wanted to. Another reason people dislike us - they fear our potential :)

Also, back over a hundred years ago the criteria for playing for Collingwood was that you had to be a Catholic - so naturally all the Protestants and other religions didn't look favourably upon them. A lot of that church rivalry is what led to the current love or hate attitude. But mainly it's because people are jealous that God's a Collingwood supporter :p

And because we are the best.

(Unless you've lived in Victoria you can't fully appreciate how much being a Collingwood supporter impacts your life - for instance the organ music that they carried my Nan's coffin out of the church to was the Collingwood theme song. Two years ago the Herald Sun released stats that showed one of the most requested songs at a funeral in Australia was, yep, the Collingwood theme song. It's a way life. )

Wow...

Were going through debates to see if we bring back a NHL team here and no one is that fanatical.
To say that no NHL team as any theme song, not even the Original Six.

Though I understand in a way. There actually people in this country who like the Toronto Maple Leafs. Poor lost souls.
I can see how you can support teams other than the Senators and the Habs, but the Leafs? Really? As soulless as their city that bunch.

Hockey.
There's only one baseball team and it's in Toronto. Seeing as how it's an American city that somehow exists in Canada.

As for cricket, meh, no one plays it so we don't have any good players. It's like expecting Aussies to have a good hockey team.

We do have a good hockey team - just on grass, not ice :)

Grockey? I suppose, though I've never really considered that an international competition sport.
To be honest I've seen and heard of more international tournaments for curling.

It's in the Olympics - doesn't get more international then that :p

Ah, sports - I feel sorry for people who don't follow at least one type of sport - can't help but think they are missing out on a lot.

I'm hoping to be able to fly to Melbourne to watch the Grand Final on tv in a pub somewhere (tickets are impossible to get) - I expect to have a hundred new friends by 9pm :p

Well, the adrenaline has subsided now so think I'll be off to bed now to dream of all things Cloke.....or if my fiancé reads this then I meant to say Matador...all things Matador :)

Ahh, the Collingwood football club...how best to describe such a wretched hive of scum and villainy? :p

Loki has it spot on with the history, so I won't go there. It's an instinctual love/hatred. You don't become a Collingwood supporter/hater - you either are or you aren't, there's no between. At least for real supporters of the game.

To put it into perspective, the Collingwood football club is like the Bible Belt - there's a lot of 'em, they're loud and have a penchant for toothlessness and thuggery, and they're very, very annoying. :p They occasionally show some goodwill and common sense, but it's mainly a lost cause.

I don't think they have quite the impact Loki is suggesting. In Victoria probably, but in the heartlands of Rugby country, like Newcastle or Woolongong? Not a chance. I know people who couldn't tell you a thing about Collingwood - they just never hear about AFL where they're from.

And your figures are 20 years old, Loki. Besides, your numbers only appear so great next to the rest of us because all of your opposition is spread out through the other clubs. There are many more that hate Collingwood than love them. The entirety of the Hawthorn, Essendon and Carlton membership, for instance. :)

As for being the best, well, for now.

You know Port Adelaide use to be the Port Adelaide MAGPIES and were Collingwood's SISTER team in SA - the Collingwood Cheer Squad use to double as there cheer squad as well....even when people don't won't to admit that they prefer Collingwood they still go and do little things to show that they subconsciously do :) ANd yes, that all makes perfect logic :p

Huh, there you go - I always knew there was a reason Port were my second most loathed team. :p

I remember them being described way back before they joined the AFL as "the Collingwood of the SANFL". There and then purely on instinct I decided they must be a bunch of prats. Lo and behold, my instinct served me well. :)

Nonsense. A hop-skip-and a jump would have had you there in a jiffy.

I have a question for you Canadians: was the decision to name Toronto's NHL team the Maple Leafs a conscious slap in the face of English or what?

I hate Pixar. They make me far too emotional, far too easy. Sheer genius.
