I'd love to be able to help Ment but somehow I believed that would be easy to come across and the problem would be sifting through all the info.

How about a drink?

I'll have a drink to the Fallen, barkeep.

Quote

For The Fallen
by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

me and my partner were being defence lawyers in a trafficking case. Our client was accused of posession for the purpose of trafficking of 3 keys of coke. the story was, she (a 30-smth) hairstylist with 3 divorces fell in with a 26-y.o. male stripper, who used her money to buy the coke, while telling her she was helping out his aquaintance hide some diamonds from a bankruptcy court (so, something slightly less illegal). the pair were the witnesses for the defence. the Crown's witnesses were the cop in charge of the reverse sting op, and the police informant--a 27 y.o multiple offender, sho was woring with the cops to find buyers, arrange deals, and then have the cops bust the buyers.

our basic argument was that there wasn't any evidence that she girl knew at any pint that she was dealing with coke (knowledge must be proven to convict), and that the only shred of evidence that she did came from the informant--who's not the most reliable witness.
it helped immensely that the guy playing the cop 9who I was supposed to cross-examine) got stage fright, and couldn't even read his own script (he was the only one allowed to refer to it--"his police notes") properly. He basically told me whatever I wanted him to say. it was beautiful.

at the end of the nearly 4 hour trial the lawyer playing the judge told us that if he was the actual judge, he'd acquit. made me very happy.

@Ment: Sounds like a good court case. Thank god for bad witnesses.

@Dammon and Loki:

A solemn pint for all and a Poppy to remember.

I would ask that all those on the forum who still have their 11th ahead of them to observe a moment of silence at 11h11 in their respective zones.

night, peeps.

I've had an old-school uki guys night today. we went rock climbing, afterwards we got together to drink and talk history and politics, oh , and tell jokes that mostly make fun of Russians.

shot by shot, we finished a 26 of Absolut, and a half L of Uki honey vodka with pepper. all this b/w 5 people, 2 of whom were DDs, so drank very little. and since we had proper food to follow the shots, I feel mildly buzzed, which shouldn't interfere with the many plans I have for tomorrow.

damn, but I missed old-country-style drinking nights.

Here you go Ment:

"Darkwatch's Dies Irae"
2 parts grappa
3 parts 94% alcohol
1 part Screech rum
3 parts Vodka
3 parts Sambuca
2 parts Absinthe
4 drops pure LSD
2 parts ether
50 grams of pure cocaine (for the RAGE)

You light it on fire then drink it immediately while it's still burning.

Hope that does the trick.

Any idea why you got a headache?

oh, I know exactly why I have a headache: because of how hectic work was.

you remember the old jetsons movie? how in towards the beginning, they start up the new factory, and they see the numbers going up, and then all of a sudden their profits start to drop, and there's nothing they can do to stop that? yeah, that's how my night was. about 1/3 into the shift we were about 1 k overgoal. Then, with 1 h to go, we were breaking even, and in the last h under we sank around half a k under. you see that happen, and you see everything you try to do to fix it backfire, or just not work. it's frustrating. Especially when the root of a problem is a mechanical deficiency in the new version of software we have to use. A deficiency we pointed out to our managers numerous times as somehting that's important and could be vital to us. And we were told, "oh, just work around it, b/c it's not changing".yes, well one of the ways we work around it is having 3 supervisors per busy shift (which is really a half-measure/crutch), and you don't even give us that with the latest schedule. sigh.

on top of that, I've generally had a crappy day. No internet for most of the day (and as I found out after holding for over 20 mins, there was some cable malfunction that took about 8 hours to fix), and we lost our playoffs game, to a bad sportsmanship team, and we nearly got into a fight with them over it. grrr.

just, a really really messed up day in general.

The same goes for my brother.
Now I've just been informed that my friend is also getting married next summer.

What the hell is going on?

The day started out well.
It all went to hell around 15h when there was a surge in clients. Quiet morning then bang! The store is infested.
One woman at 17h (the time we closed) ran for the door and got in just as I was heading for it.

Also it was a really nice day out and I would have loved to take a nice walk, get home and have a cup of tea and take it easy.

I'll turn the fire suppression system into a dry shower one of these days and lock any client still in the store in. It'll be a good cleansing I think, very cathartic.

*Preps a Lamborghini*

Here you go GH. Enjoy it.

I'm currently having excellent brandy.
