since we have many characters refered to as anti-heroes.

my "greatest" villain would be an anti-villain

Bingo! Which, speaking of great villains, also features Mongo, a giant ninja who has chainsaw nunchucks.

Agreed, skinwalker was a bad mofo.

Actually, I'm going to add Pratchett's Auditors of Reality, here. Comic, yeah, but creepy too.

Agreed. Absolute little toffs. It is funny then they accidentally refer to themselves and vanish though. :D

1. Kallor (although it seems to have dampened somewhat)
2. Jonathan Teatime from Pratchett (creepy as fuck)
3. Korbolo Dom (crucifies an entire army, 'nuff said)
4. The Limper from Black Company (damn near invincible)
5. Crippled God (not outright evil, but something about him is wrong.
Suck it Errant!

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

Recurring series villians always seem to suffer from Villian Decay or often get Put on a Bus. And so suffer from either their omnipresence (and yet, failure to stop the hero(es)), or far-away-land syndrome to explain it away.

Truly solid villians of pure evil are tough to come by, IMHO, because they'd be too effective to allow Good (or any other shade therein) to triumph in the end.

Too right. Along those lines: villainous inanimate objects?

Pratchett's gonne might fit here.

I won't go into details, but the villain and the 'idea shark' from THE RAW SHARK TEXTS are two of the most original and interesting genre 'villain' creations i've read in a while.

OK I really do think Stormbringer fits the bill and was a genius addition here, but how about gollums "precious"?

In no particular order.
1: Kallor.
2: Karsa (he aims to commit world wide genoicde. Sounds like a villian to me)
3: Thrawn. (I'm putting him as Science Fantasy. You can ignore him if it doesn't count)
4: Twyin Lannister
5: Randall Flagg. (Somewhat Dark Lordish, with an element of Trickster thrown in)
6: Thanos (his character ended up being MUCH more interesting than Darkseid's. Debatable as to who is more powerful,Omega beams and all that jazz, but actual character-wise? Thanos by a country mile)
7: The entire Forkrul Assail race.

Technically, the Runeblades aren't inanimate objects 9don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the Stormbringer novel).

Father Etlau--in Perumov's "Cronicles of the Rift"
I'll agree with Littlefinger from ASOIAF
since I recently read vol 1 of the Coldfire trilogy, Count Merentha
who else.... Zavulon, from Lukyanenko's "Watch" series. that guy is the incarnation of evil.
oh, and, also from SE, chancellor Triban Gnol.

At the risk of getting burned for this I'm going to say Egwene al'Vere.

Now I know half of the literary world has a hard-on for the stupid, self-righteous bitch, but she has not done anything for anyone that didn't serve her own purposes.
She's time and again compared her actions and deeds as equal to the contributions of any other living being in the world.
She thinks she has suffered the worst of all the people in the world, which grants herself the opinion that she deserves only everything she wants.
She would not only turn her back on her own friends to get what she wants but she would eradicate anyone who would stand her way.
The only thing that separates her from the Forsaken is her current lack of affiliation with the Dark One.

I hate her!

I hate her!

I hate her!

SHE NEEDS TO DIE!

GODS I HATE HER!
Why should I infect them with my rage?

Which actually memory-triggered one of my absolute favourite outright evil muthafuckas...
GOLGOTH.
If you haven't read the sadly short-lived comic EMPIRE by Waid and Kitson, GO. GO NOW.
And then come back and agree with me. Think Dr Doom with a hefty dose of Lex Luthor who just happens to have conquered the world because he actually read the Evil Overlord List and then proceeded to make NONE of those mistakes.

Sanderson gives Egwene a Crowning Moment of Awesome in the latest WoT book that largely redeems the character.
