Nope. I'm kinda reluctant to do that, after the fiasco that was Gothic 3. Risen was fucking awesome and I don't want to ruin that.

Just redeemed my duke nukem forever code, purchased FM2011 and Fallout Las Vegas. And here I was planning to do less gaming until Shogun 2 is released.

Aight fellas, I'm gonna try Gothic 4 out this evening. Let's see how it compares to the rampant mediocrity of Gothic 3, and the unbridled awesomeness of Risen.

Funny fact: I didn't buy Gothic 4. But while I had Steam running, I went forward and bought Risen finally. Given the guys what they deserve.
Now I might even play through it again.
Also, it's funny to read reviewers and players complain about the combat. I guess they're a bit spoiled by ZOMG I AM GOD prowess of game heroes from the past few years. Kinda consoles spoiled them methinks. I just love how you HAVE to be at full attention in combat in both the Gothic games and Risen, for the whole game.

Hehehehe, that was my thought as well, as I don't really like freeroam stuff (ehm, so why did I buy Fallout: Vegas?) and Gothic has always been buggy for me.

Meh, I love Gothic, sincerely and from the bottom of my heart. I even finished that shitty Gothic 3 three times. But after G3 I'm just not going to make the leap of faith and pay fifty fucking euros for that. I'll wait a year or so until it's cheaper.
Free roaming games can be great, but they're a bitch to get into. I remember I actually ditched Morrowind after lik 2 hours the first time. Makes me shiver.

Most people never got out of Seyda Neen, let alone spent two hours in the game. XD
I purchased both Fable III and Fallout New Vegas today. Damn but New Vegas is pricey here! $134 NZ for the standard, run-of-the-mill edition on Xbox. The Fable III limited edition doesn't cost that much! D:
Anyway, I played Fable III first, and I can confirm that it is pretty much the same setup as Fable II, only a LOT more streamlined, has less pretend-RPG elements, and has a more engaging opening cinematic.*
The best part of the New Vegas cinematic was the sniper shot...everything else was mediocre.
But, what's really bugging me about New Vegas, are the animations! Not the graphics, which are fine, if a bit dated, not the voice acting, which is superb, or the combat, which is fine, but the animations. Watching another human NPC run is...an actual trauma to the eyes. It's horrible! What the fuck did they do wrong here?
So, after a mere 20 minutes with New Vegas (15 of which was character creation), I went back to Fable 3. I admit it. I prefer Fable 3 to New Vegas based solely off first impressions. I then spent the rest of the afternoon playing Fable. Instead of New Vegas.
I'm going back to New Vegas tomorrow, simply because I want the story, I want the world, and I want the 'proper' (or 'traditional', is probably a better fit) RPG experience. If I can stomach the goddamn animations.
New Vegas: storyline, world, character building, dialogue, dark humour.
Fable 3: streamlined, pretty, light humour, easy.
So, the latter is actually more 'fun' unless you have a character to commit to and an investment in the world. But DAMN THOSE ANIMATIONS. My god. WORSE than Morrowind. Seriously. Not kidding. If I can't get past those, I will never get into the game, and that will disappoint me immensely.
*the main qualm I had with Fable II (and hell, with Fable, aside from it's broken promises and annoying interactions, terrible graphical style (imo) and a few other issues) was it's claim to be an RPG. It was not. Not in the traditional sense of the word. That, and the 'seamlessly change between ranged, magic and melee attacks" shit, because it put the attack buttons on the X/Y/Z keys. Annoying as hell, and unfortunately that still is in 3, but I think I'm over that gripe now. This one, now that it doesn't pretend so hard to be an RPG, I can actually enjoy as a game. I think...

Bethesda was never very good with animations. In both Oblivion and Morrowind, while graphics in static were FUCKING AWESOME, animations were clunky and ugly. One of the few games where I opted for First Person view while having the option for over-the-shoulder camera. Can't recall what it was like for Fallout 3 but probably similar.
As for Fable, I only played the first one, and it was kinda meh. I finished it, of course, even twice methinks, but the points you raise are all spot on. Though I liked that edge-of-the-world that late game port town had. Still, way too cartoonish, and bear in mind I like WoW's style, so me calling stuff cartoonish means a lot.
Then again, it is called 'Fable', heh.

Obsidian did a bad job? Ouch. After KotOR2, I've had a really high oppinion about these guys. They outdid the original, even counting in the incompleteness due to time restraints and corporate meddling...

I can't comment on the rest of the game - it is a LOT harder to choose starting perks, and the 'intro' to the stats and such is much more entertaining. They seem to have got a better feel of "Fallout" than Bethesda had, and I have high hopes for the storytelling/characters/etc. But...the animations and graphics are terrible.

The amount of glitches, crashes and save file corruptions have convinced me that I will be buying the GOTY edition rather than taking a chance on New Vegas.
Word of warning. If you want to be safe you should back up your save files every 5 hours or so. Read a story about a guy who lost 30 hours of progress when every single save he'd made became corrupted.

Yeah, I heard about that kind of thing too. I hate game-killing glitches.
But hey, eventually it will all be patched away. I might just leave the thing alone for a month or two. XD

I actually know the lead programmer for Morrowind. I got to see their last release candidate, but it got axed for performance problems. I guarantee nobody would complain about the graphics if that package had gotten out. It was BEAUTIFUL.

I've never complained about Morrowind's graphics myself - it was a 2001 game, and a MASSIVE world, so what they got out of it was great. The animations, however...
Oblivion was a different story, though. Great static graphics, as Gothos said, but the animations/etc were sub-par.
And do you still know this person, and does he still work for Bethesda? How much will it cost to get him to spill the beans on TES:V? XD

Hmm, funny that my most frustrating memory of pc gaming was having 30 hours of play wasted when a bug-fix was released, but wasn't compatible with current game saves.
The game? Fallout 2...
