Gamescom brings a ton of gameplay goodness

ÀC Odyssey, DMC5, Sekiro and Biomutant look like standouts for me.

I guess there was another closed game play demo of Cyberpunk 2077. But then that got overshadowed by a 'transphobic' tweet that Projekt Red sent out or something.

I would like to hear the account of the game play witnessed by those who attended the demo, or better yet, release it for popular consumption.

DMC 5 Gameplay! Looks amazing. I am excited! We can pretend DMC never happened

The issue with Pillars of Eternity, at least for me, is that it was way too focused on power gaming. That is, it was all percentages and numbers. This legendary sword of ultimate destruction does 55% extra damage, an amazing 5% more than my previous, not so legendary sword. This improved spell does 15 % more area of effect damage than the previous one.

And so on and so forth. Nothing felt truly special, and no spells felt truly powerful.

PoE2 is a little better, but it still suffers from that.

Is this not every RPG game ever?

I liked PoE. Granted, I don't have much of a reference point since I haven't played Baldur's gates (yes, I know. They're in the backlog), but yes. Combat was better than Planescape Torment (obviously), and since I had a tendency to constantly venture into over-levelled areas like the dungeon under the keep, each encounter became a puzzle on how to not die and wipe out superior foes.

I also loved the lore and the pantheon. I really need to replay this game with the White March expansion.

Haven't played the Divinity games yet.

In other news: IGN off-handedly mentioned that the release date for Biomutant is now "sometime next summer"

And Q1 to next year is shaping up to be crazy:

Jan 25: Resi 2 HD
Feb 12th: Trials Rising
Feb 22: Anthem, Crackdown 3, Days Gone, Metro Exodus
March 5: DMC 5
March 22: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

And we still have to imagine Ubi will wedge either The Division 2 or Skull & Bones somewhere in there as well...

Resi 2 HD interests me, the rest not. Crackdown MAYBE with a group. Metro, hard nope, 2033 was ass garbage. Anthem, nope, EA lootbox hell.

March for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - usual slot for a Souls/Bloodborne game.

Can't see me not getting that on release.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Looking at the gameplay video for Biomutant I am very conflicted. The gameplay looks unique'ish and colourful but also unpolished and broken. It looks janky as hell but also ambitious. It looks decidedly middle tier. Sort of like Spiders games.

Both of these followed AC Origins too. It's been a good year for me! :p

THQ Nordic's entire philosophy is to produce AA games. Just like Darksiders III, this is unashamedly, a game first. They are not trying to be art or almost movie-like, like Song's ultra-polished exclusives- these are games first, and I really like that.

Spiders otoh, are really trying to make high-quality AAA RPGs on a shoestring budget each time. Their own engine isn't really powerful enough to offer the kind of detail to make their worlds looked "lived in" though. (At least that was my impression from the 3 early title. Still need to play Bound by Flame and Technomancer)

edit: also, the narrator in Biomutant is the guy from The Stanley Parable, which is just a brilliant thing.

And Call of Cthulhu is coming late October. Already have plans to play through it with a friend I can hold hands with when it gets creepy.

I am very conflicted about whether I should buy Spider-Man or Destiny 2 Forsaken collection in September.

On the one hand I want to play Spider-Man desperately, he's my favourite superhero, and I don't want to have the story spoiled.

On the other hand, Destiny 2 is a multiplayer game. It's best to play them on release when the population is highest. It's just ridiculously expensive to buy the complete edition with season pass.

What to do?

Destiny 2 was fun for a while but is pretty shit all in all. Spiderman might be great.

I would go with Spider-Man too. While the Foresaken expansion looks like Bungie has been listening, their track record with D2 has been for shit and so it's very likely they are blowing smoke. Besides, you have to buy the horrible Curse of Osiris and Warmind expansions to even play it (glad I wasn't a sucker and bought those) , which really sucks. I logged in for the first time since Feb. to try out this 'Solstice of Heroes' event they have going on, and to me, it's a huge let down. Just more grinding to attain cool stuff. I'm not against grinding per se. I had loads of fun grinding in Borderlands, but grinding in Destiny just hasn't really been fun for me. You do have a valid point though that there will be more people playing early on.

On the other hand, has Insomniac Games ever screwed you over like Bungie has? Nope. They've always delivered quality entertainment. I always caution to wait for reviews you trust before buying a game, but I have high confidence that Spider-Man is going to rate excellent.

Oh, reviews will definitely have a say in my decision.

If Spider-Man gets 9s and 10s I have to play it immediately but gut feeling is that the current footage is hiding weaknesses.

There WAS that shooter they did for EA.... Fuse, I think it was called?

Not that I don't think Arkham Spidey will be a fun game, but it DID happen.

I liked FUSE. Not a very original game but a good shooter.

I decided to borrow Destiny 2 from the library. It won't have the quality of life upgrades from Forsake but it's better than paying 500kr just to figure out I'm not into it.
