I love tight focused single player games. I miss them. Open world doesn't mean the game is not necessarily right. See mass effect. See shadow of mirror. See far cry and see infamous. Witcher! I can't bear the sprawling messes we are starting to see such as andromeda or dragon age inquisition. I hate it when they shoe in multiplayer. Loot boxes are a sin!

See Red Dead Redemption.

Then play DA Inquisition. What a sprawling mess that was. Games need some direction.

Multiplayer is deemed to be the main requirement of a decent game these days. 'Its fantastic, if only it had multiplayer..'.

Balls to that. I do like the subtle interplay in the likes of the Journey and the Souls series, but it's not essential.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I have serious issues about them shoehorning multiplayer into games, especially when they then hide trophies/achievements behind the multiplayer experience in what should ostensibly be a single player game, primarily at least - not massively important I know, but it is irksome as an avowed trophy whore! lol. After all I genuinely play games to be antisocial! There's a reason my favourite games are all solo RPG's. Honestly I don't really like multiplayer at all really, with the exception of FIFA and certain racing games I actively avoid it - and even with racing games I mostly just like the leaderboard functions for time trials, Mario Kart excepted, I'll beat anyone at Mario Kart  . For example I detest FPS games in general, the major focus for them these days is multiplayer, for obvious reasons I understand, after all shooting the AI can only be fun for so long I am sure. I have less than zero interest in tying my game playing experience to the whims of some 8 year old kid, frankly. Now obviously I'm not saying games shouldn't have multiplayer, that's ridiculous, but when it directly detracts from the single player experience because devs are insistent upon it's forced inclusion it is infuriating to me.

Dark Souls does the whole integration of multiplayer really well actually, my brother used it as an example when I went on this exact same rant with him. The thing is with Dark Souls though, even though it does it well it doesn't force itself upon you - I used the multiplayer function about twice in hundreds of hours of DS1 - which is why it works. Plus the Souls series despite what it does well - jolly cooperation, helluva lot of fun - is actually for me personally the most egregious example of just why I can't stand tying my gaming experience to other human beings, after the 5th invasion in a row by some prick and his merry gank squad my mind becomes a dark place of seething misanthropy! Though I will admit that actually killing an invading gank squad is a feeling second only to a very few, it's just not worth the frustration frankly.

Dragon Age Inquisition was rather too sprawling, and it had it's issues, not the least of which is an unnecessary multiplayer mode that they just didn't need to waste their damn time on. I'm still willing to overlook alot of those issues though, I just love the lore, the whole world is easily one of my favourites in gaming, even the second game which was definitely the worst has stolen hundreds of hours of my life. Origins is genuinely in my top 5 games of all time, so I guess I am biased. I do hope the next installment keeps a tighter focus though, fingers crossed Bioware can learn from their mistakes - even though Andromeda is not the best indication that they can.

It appears that Neogaf.com has imploded.

https://www.polygon....ations-shutdown

http://neogaf.com/

For those unfamiliar with Neogaf, it's probably the biggest forum solely dedicated to video games. It's hugely influential and any leak or rumor related to the industry is likely to show up there. It's a pretty elitist place, it's hard to even get an account there. You have to sort of follow the hivemind in many ways. Now it seems the place is eating it's own tail in the wake of the Weinstein fallout.

I can't imagine the site stays down, it's too big and profitable, but it will be interesting to see what happens in the next few days.

Finished Mass Effect Andromeda today. Feel a bit lost knowing it's done. What a game, what an experience. Truly fantastic. I don't yet have Shadow of War or Assassins Creed Origins so I don't really have much to play at the moment. Unless I go back to the Crash Bandicoot trilogy I got a couple of months back.

I agree that Andromeda was fun, but felt it was missing something, and I'm unable to put my finger on what. However, it was a good game, and I feel like a lot of people bitching about it are comparing it to just their favorite parts of the previous trilogy.

You know, I really enjoy Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. It's a but simplistic a times, sure, and if you play it too much it can get boring, but it's fun.

There is one thing that they need to change though. It carried over from the first game. And it's annoying as hell. In missions, some enemy characters can't be defeated until either dialogue finishes or someone else is beaten (or has their health reduced). This is the most annoying thing in the damn world. I can be rightfully wiping the floor with someone, but because the fight drags on for 5 minutes longer than it should, I take too much damage, making the next part of the fight unwinnable, just by taking occasional hits. It gets worse when you're in fights with two or more people, because I have to figure out how to actually divert the (functionally) defeated characters attention from me so I can wail on the others without getting clocked in the back every ten seconds. It is so unbelievably frustrating. Even in fights where I have allies the AI sometimes just refuses to go after anyone but me. (In the post-game mission I just rage quit, all three of my opponents are invulnerable once you reduce their health to 80% until all of them are in the same state... And my two allies might as well be useless because once I finish with one enemy, that one just keeps chasing me while I try to finish the other two! It's a really bad design flaw imo and a pointless one at that. Not gonna say I'm great at the game, but I don't think this mechanic actually tests skill at all.)

The series is on hold, but I would imagine it will be picked up again one day. Pretty sure its all hands on deck for Anthem and DA4 right now.

I hope everyone boycotts the new Battlefront game. EA is just taking the piss.

I think the internet is massively overreacting. I mean I am not going to buy the game either but people have now reached this hysteric point where all micro-transactions are now the work of the devil.

To be fair, there's no other way the publishers will listen. Literally. It HAS to be hysterical and over the top or the message won't get through. That's the environment that we're in at the moment in regards to consumer advocacy (at least in the US-internet market) for video games.

Completely. But I don't mind as so many people will still buy and pay extra to play that EA won't be persuaded to change anything.

It is ridiculous when you think about it. A free app which then has microtransactions at least makes sense from a funding point of view. Buying a full price game, and then offering upgrades and game content for money - that's why I mean by taking the piss. Of course they say you can grind for the same stuff, but the multiplayer means you'd be grinding against those who have paid for upgrades.

I never even got to fly the Falcon or Slave one or probably even accessed half of the games content in the first BattleFront, and felt a bit ripped off then. But having to pay makes that a complete deal breaker, I don't care how pretty it is.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I know asking about mods on a console is blasphemy. And i know i'm about 2 years behind playing this game. But has anyone tried any mods on PS4 for Fallout 4? I know with Sony's restrictions its pretty much useless. But its worth a shot to ask.

Well that sort of changed with "Creation Club". Google Search: What is Creation Club. Which was rolled out as an update a few months ago.

I haven't looked into what is available my self, but the idea is (for a price) you can install mods of various types/features/enhancements. I've read good and bad opinions about it and it is no where near as comprehensive a modding community as one would find on PC. I suppose it's Sony's and Bethesda's attempt at answering the critics who say they don't allow mods on the PlayStation console.

Giantbomb have been very negative about the game too, despite the reviewer - Dan Ryckert - being a big Star Wars fan and quite fond of the first game. Their main criticism seems to be that even if all the microtransactions were gone for good, the progression system would still be terrible.

Are all the games for this year out already? Seems earlier than usual.
