So I've finished Risen 3: Titan Lords yesterday evening. It was a very cool game. It's not as world-shattering awesome as Gothic 1&2 were to me, but it's a very solid open world RPG that doesn't do hand-holding or level scaling. As a Piranha Bytes classic would be, the difficulty curve is inverted, they made melee combat a lot, lot better than in Risen 2 (though it's a different system than Gothic was) and they made magic usable as a melee weapon (at least for Rune Magic from Demon Hunter faction - I've not yet done a playthrough with a crystal glove as Guardian, or as a voodoo practitioner, though I intend to eventually).
I think the setting for Risen 2 and 3 was a rather brave move, though some could say it maybe is an attempt to cash in on Pirates of the Caribbean popularity - several years later... but a fantasy world with pirates, muskets, pistols and tropical islands and sailing and sea battles? Pretty cool stuff.
If you're a fan of Piranha Bytes titles, this one's a game to buy now. If you're generally an RPG fan, get it when it's on a Steam sale.

Next up: restoring the Roman Empire and "world" conquest as Byzantium in CK2, Old Gods start (Makedon dynasty). Plan: take over middle east and north african coast, and then Spain, to eventually grow enough to challenge the Karlingblob for Italy. Here's hoping they'll be still fragmented and maybe even at war with each other instead of everything west of the Elbe being inherited by one Karling.
I've actually done this once before, but several patches ago, before achievements and Ironman mode were a thing, starting in 1081 at Alexiad as Komemnos.
Protip for conquests in CK2: once you grow to a certain point you can win most wars with just your retinue (plus eventually a vassal holy order or varangian guard) so consecutive wars go a lot faster as you don't have to gather your troops. I've already shattered the Saffarids, Fatimids and Abbasids in battle in my conquests in the Levante, and Antioch and Jerusalem have fallen. Moving up to Alexandria and then east into Persia.

Dishonoured is free on Xbox this month. Dont know anything about it, Is it worth playing.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

I've been playing it over the weekend since I had it for ages without playing so I might as well burn through it, and it's pretty fun! It's the world's best manstealing simulator - blink behind a dude, choke/stab him, grab him and blink away to throw him onto your pile of dudes, rinse repeat. I can't say I've noticed any real changes between low and high chaos, besides like four lines of dialogue (mostly from Martin) and the coolest kid's drawing ever, but the carthartic release of your bad run gameplay after the temptation of all those murdery doodads you won't let yourself use in your good run is so satisfying! Yes I can finally use this land mine that turns men into thinly sliced sandwich meat! Or this spell that summons a million rats that eat people to corpses and then beyond! Or these grenades!

Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

OK I got to the Dunwall Tower mission on high chaos and yep, there are definitely differences now!

Wish I'd picked up the Daud DLC when the main game was on sale, but I can wait til next time I guess.

You can blink while carrying people?! WTF! I never knew that.

I remember being super bummed that I got the High Chaos ending. I assume to get the good ending you have to not kill everyone but I was so tidy. Every kill I made was stealthy, I made sure to never get caught or even seen. Every body was thrown into a canal or hidden in a shadow or closet. There was no chaos. Only highly calculated expedience. It was neat, quick and left no mess.

I bought the extra story DLC during the Summer sale. Haven't gotten around to playing them yet but I hear the content is really good.

Yeah, you can use spells whenever your left hand is free, regardless of what's in your right. You can also use it while leaning around corners, making the see-through-walls power useless on later playthroughs once you remember where all the good loot is.

As for chaos, if you kill more than 20% of a level it counts as high chaos, give or take a few actions - Lord Shaw is high chaos while saving Curnow is low, for instance - that effect it. I wouldn't worry though, the low chaos ending sucks.

I've heard it's so good that it persuaded the developers against having a voiceless protagonist again, and also in the second DLC there's a boss fight you already did in the main campaign, just from the other side.

I loved Dishonored. It was the atmosphere that did it as much as gameplay. The world felt like a grown-up dark version of Albion from Fable.

I was hopeful about Dishonored in early descriptions, then the trailers showed it as just another massacre simulator. There just aren't any other games like the Thief series, are there?

So did you only watch one trailer, or something?

Currently blitzing through a ghost nonlethal no alarms run*, and Blink 2 makes it a piece of cake. Gonna try a sneakier Mostly Flesh and Steel (no Outsider powers bar the mandatory Blink 1, which you need for one jump in Dunwall Tower, just gadgets and gizmos) a while afterwards though, don't know how I'd deal without my magic mojo.



*for Gothos this is no killing humans (not even the assassination targets, since there are nonlethal methods of eliminating all targets in such a way that might actually be kinda worse in some cases), no unconscious people spotted or wires tripped and never being fully seen at all

It's pretty much the closest thing to a Thief game and, until the rebooted Thief got announced, was on most Thief fans' radar for that reason. XD

Haha, yeah. I quite like that variety of options, though. It's like Hitman; you can play it loud and messy, or quiet and clean, or somewhere in between. That level of choice is always welcome, imo, as long as the game world reacts appropriately.

A lot of the abilities are useful for both stealthing and murder, for instance the possession ability can put you into the body of a fish and have you swim through a grate into the sewer entrance of a place past all the guards or let you move in a guard's body through a wall of light so it thinks you're friendly and doesn't disintegrate you, while the bend time ability can freeze enemies and let you run right by them without them noticing or line up several sleep dart shots at the same time, for peak sneak. OR you can bend time the moment a guard fires a bullet, possess him, move him into the path of the bullet, unpossess him, return time to normal and watch him shoot himself in the face.

Have been wanting Dishonoured for a while so am downloading now!

As for current gaming I picked up Dragon Age: Origins on the cheap in CEX so am going through that. It's pretty good fun and I am planning on getting the 2nd one when I have finished with it. Though I heard a lot of people hated that one for some reason...

I completed Dark Souls 2 and in revolutionary move into a new genre I restarted Dark Souls 1 again. I started playing Saints Row 4 as its completely different from DS. Ill go back to it as I enjoyed SR3 thoroughly and this one looks even crazier.

Hey in Dragon Age, do you know if you leave party members for ages without having them physically accompany you do they get mad? I really like the team I have now as we work well together so I don't really want to change it but I don't want anyone to leave. Also, if they disapprove too much what are the consequences? A few of them hated me for a bit cos I ended up having to kill that Connor kid (like I had a choice!)

No, if I remember right, most of whether they like you or not can come from your conversations when you're camped.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.
