Who's your favourite character in the genre? I got to thinking some of the books I read as a youngster left a deeper makr with me maybe because I was easier to influence. Which will explain some of my choices.

Here's mine.

1)Rudd Threetrees : Joe Abercrombie's the Blade Itself.

2)Waylander : David Gemmel's Waylander.

3)Kallor : Steven Erikson's MBotF.

4)Belgarath the Sorcerer : David Eddings' Belgariad.

5)Tywin Lannister : George Martin's SoIaF

Y'all seem to be restricting this to conventional SF, so I'll leave out characters like Judge Holden from Blood Meridian.

Dream - The Sandman (After a rocky beginning, it is easy to understand how so, so many people fell in love with this series - and Dream is the one that makes it go.)

Marid Audran - A Fire in the Sun (Read this book and tell me the manner in which he deals with personal and outside problems isn't quintessentially human.)

Apsalar - MBotF (Took a genre staple and changed the character into someone with depth and unpredictability - which is pretty common in MBotF, but I cottoned onto her pretty early on. Perhaps I don't like the character so much, as the nexus of characters and plot that revolve around her. I hope her story gains further resolution by Erikson himself.)

Raven - Snow Crash (He is the epitome of a badass normal human. There is nothing in literature that beats a Sovereign harpooneer.)

Thomas Covenant - The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (I have no idea how Donaldson successfully made him a protagonist. On this site alone, you'll find people who find him hateful, despicable and unlikable. Yet he's an amazing character who genuinely does good for those around him. I just sit around and read his books in awe of that achievement while enjoying the books themselves. Hated the Gap cycle though.)
