Does anyone has any clear idea how did Mallick Rel manage to acompplish the political position he holds at the beginning of TRotCG?
How he goes from being a defeated character in the seven cities conflict to control almost all the claws and the untan nobility?
This(which applies to Korbolo Dom too) was the only weak aspect from The Bone Hunters. When Tavore arrives at Malaz, he is already positioned.
I think this political ascendancy is a little hard to believe.Does anyone has any theory why Laseen allowed this? Why did she need Mallick and Korbolo? Because now it is clear this decision was her biggest mistake.

Proper marketing. They returned as heroes and blamed everything on the Wickans. It's the usual play on old enmities and racism. Like Hitler said, the bigger the lie, the more people will believe it.

Plus the man got half the claw on his side (probably through bribary and playing to the fact that most of them were orphaned by Laseen's commands and actions), and was using Elder magic which rendered Laseen's usual otataral tactics useless against his magic.

Well, yes and no. What I'd say is that Elder Magic, being more raw and primordial, is less affected by Otataral - it doesn't defeat it entirely, but neither is it completely neutralised by it like newer magic. Just a guess, but that's what I figure...

IMo its just really, really good political play.
He de facto forced Laseen to elect him into Council. (because without it, whole Wickan story and other cover actions wouldnt work, Mallick was "national hero" in story about Coltaine betrayer...). He had good position inside of Malaz elite and quickly made his own personal Claw. In BH Laseen had last chance to get rid of him and clean Claw, because she lost all capable leaders (Topper went to his hunting mission).

After the rebellion on Seven Cities and the subsequent plague, the empire was looking at the very real possibility of a crippling famine. Lasseen need the Wickan plains to be turned into farmland to feed the empire, or at least Quon Tali. Mallick Rell and Korbolo Dom came back with the story Coltaine and the Wickans had actually instigated the rebellion, and were subsequently defeated by Mallick and Korbolo. This allows them to return as heroes, and gain positions of prominence in the Empire such as First Sword and Mallick's position as sort of a liaison between the nobles and the government.
So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
