generally, it's still some time in the future to be sure, but we can at least hope the feel of the original two games by Looking Glass will return... they're actually fishing for feedback from the community a lot. Myself, I almost wet myself when I ran into this. Any other Thief maniacs out there crazy for another bucketload of Garret's exploits?

I persuade you to get both first and second game. One of the most unique experiences in gaming to date.

While Deadly Shadows has The Shalebridge Cradle to speak in it's favour, "they changed it now it sucks" applies. But even more, decent ideas with terrible implementation. All in all, bar that one mission, a large letdown, TDS.

Ohh, there's a set of all three available on Amazon for £6. Compatibility seems to be an issue though - if the first two don't run on Vista, will they run on Windows7?

There might indeed be a problem with that it seems. Still, running a virtual machine like through VirtualBox and running WinXP on it should solve the issue, with some fixes alongside it - there's some nice info on the web concerning making Thief work with newer stuff.

If you have enough space on your harddrive, set up a dual boot with XP, then you can play older games. But do you know they won't work? If they are coded well, they might work fine. (example: Starcraft)
Or a virtualbox like Gothos said.

The amazon reviews all say that there are compatibility problems, but they are all talking about Vista, so it might be different with 7 I suppose. I have had problems running older games, like Knights of the Old Republic.

Yeah, they're not all as good coded as Starcraft.
So I guess it's dual boot or a virtualbox that is the solution for you.

So I guess it's dual boot or a virtualbox that is the solution for you.erm... the only reason starcraft works so well is cause its so popular that the MS code monkeys made sure that xp/vista/7 had all the right shit packaged in that it would run without issue.
teh brood: which version of 7 do you have? I have the disks for thief 1 and 2 somewhere, and a quick and dirty fix to make an old game run on vista was pretty simple to do, I don't think it will be much more difficult for win 7, though I haven't bothered to try yet.

I have Thief Gold (which is the better version of hte first game)
it runs on Win 7, thopugh i've had to tweak it. Looking Glass' forum has all the fixes, though.
haven't tried Thief 2 yet, because i'm still playing one, albeit very slowly due to lack of time
(I played through the first mission... not a single crash or anyhting)
EDIT: i'm running a 64-bit win7, btw

While you're at it, take a hit at doing a full playthrough with taking ALL loot, dealing ZERO damage, on Expert. It's not as hardcore as Ghosting, but it's pretty entertaining and challanging. You can add no saves during the mission and you're set for a pretty amusing experience.

Is that more or less infuriating than playing a pure psionic on impossible in system shock 2?

I've never been able to get it to run on XP (and I've spent several evenings, at least, trying every bit of advice on LG forums).
on Win7, all I had to do was change the affinity to a single core and the game ran flawlessly.
