Was grub the baby that duiker handed to keneb?, it's somthing that i missed earlier but
duiker said "Now run captain, But tell me your name, for there may well be a mother or father still alive for that child"

Keneb
then turns around and says " keneb sir,and i will take care of that lass until then"....

I
realise that it may seem that im nit-picking but it was just somthing i noticed while reading and it kind of confused me, i realise that keneb
may not have seen anything that identified the baby as boy, if it is in fact grub, but it's not somthing that is often gotten wrong in many novels

There are plenty of references later on about Grub that imply he was adopted, so I always assumed named baby was Grub, but I never spotted the remark about a lass.

I think it's either a mistake by Keneb or by Erikson. And if it's the latter, he'll just blame it on the former.

No, that'd be his biological kids - Vaneb and... something, forget the other boy's name.

grub is describe as a curly blonde-haired blue-eyed kid. it would be very easy for a distraught keneb to make such a simple mistake while in the midst of the end of the chain. i think it was grub.

also, this from DoD

Grub is secretly Orfantal.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I'm sure that when Duiker gets into Aren and meets with keneb that Keneb says he handed the lass to her family.......... two different kids entirely.

You're absolutely right:

"The historian did not notice - nor did anyone else - the arrival of a captain of Blistig's garrison. The man had been about to speak with Duiker, to inform him of the safe delivery of a child to a grandfather. But at the word 'Jhistal' he stiffened, then, eyes widening, he took a step back."

So Keneb has delivered the lass to her family - it really can't be Grubb. So, who is Grubb then? I always assumed it was this kid!

I am getting lost here. Outside Aren Duiker placed one child in Keneb's arms.

Only thing that does not make sense to me is why Keneb never changed the baby's diaper. Seriously, believe the confusion is deliberate. It is one of Erikson's RAFO mysteries. The baby's sex is deliberately obscure or misleading.

Outside Aren Duiker saw a child no more than eighteen months old. He swept the child into one arm. He spotted a captain and rode to him. 'Here take this child. 'Tell me your name, captain, for there may well be a mother or father alive for that child.' Keneb,
'I will take care of the lass, I swear it.' At this point neither Duiker or Keneb knew the sex of the child.

At the urging of Mallick Rel, Pormqual decides to destroy Korbolo Dom's army. Keneb is called to formation so he finds a babysitter, a grandfather. Keneb is about to tell Duiker of the safe delivery of a
chld when the word Jhistal makes him stop - it has bad connotations

the "lass" thing is probably kenebs mistake. the report of a child delivered safely to a grandfather could be any child, but odds are it was grub. the chances of that person actually being grubs grandfather are slim and grubs strange enough as it is. that he might have run away from a near-stranger to find the last person he was with isn't that hard to fathom.
