Just read this today:

8 Unexpected Downsides of the Switch to E-Books @ Cracked.com
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Like someone said before, the first person to invent an iPad-like tablet with the normal lit screen on one side and an eInk screen on the other side is going to be a gajillionaire. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet.

Not sure if this technology will fly or if there are others working on it too. We shall see.

I know that I'm late to this discussion but I had to add my voice to the Kindle love-in. I've had mine for about a year and a half now (it was a b-day gift in 2010) and I adore it, I even bought a very nice padded sleeve so that I can carry it to and from work and not worry about it being wrecked, scratched and etc. I got it because I was - and still am - running out of space for the books that I do have. I'm talking 4 overflowing bookshelves in a 1 bedroom apartment...sometimes I think it's a miracle that my floors haven't collapsed!

I do still buy "normal" books, however, though easily 80% of my purchases are now for the Kindle. I tend to go the old school route if a - I already have several books in a series and want to keep going with the paper version or b- it's not available as an eBook, as was the case when "White Luck Warrior" was released.

I even saw recently on Amazon's site that they've released a Kindle touch and I was really tempted by it, but unless this one breaks I don't plan on replacing or upgrading it any time soon.

*Hugs her Kindle*

Also now added the Kindle App on my Galaxy S2 for super, super easibility (is it a word, Kruppe asks?) of access to my archive. Awesome. Sometimes technology is just....awesome!

Just got a Kindle Touch as a late Christmas present. It's...it's pretty sweet, guys.

A lot of the reviews I read about the touch say the response is a bit slow, which can be irritating if you are used to the snappiness of most other touch based devices. How have you found that aspect so far, and how would you compare it to the kindle smartphone app?

Yeah the Kindle Fire's browser is sloooooooooooow.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I haven't used the Kindle app, but yeah, the response is relatively slow compared to other touchscreen devices. Still, it's really easy to use: tap the left edge of the screen to move back, touch the top edge for the menu, touch anywhere else to move forward. When you have to swipe (the store, your library) it's most noticeably delayed, but that just takes a slight period to adjust to. Zooming in and out and around in PDFs is the most obnoxious; I wouldn't really recommend it for those. Still, I played with it side-by-side with my dad's classic Kindle, and all those tiny buttons are just too fiddly; I much prefer the simplicity of the touch interface. My brother got a Kindle fire (it was his birthday/Christmas gift) and it's bigger and has more features, but man the e-ink is what makes eReaders interesting to me.

After playing around with a little more, I'll say that the Kindle Touch works fine for PDFs as long as they're formatted properly.

It's not slow for me. It's even faster than my iPad. You might want to check your wi-fi setup. If your router is a bit old, consider an upgrade.
