I also 'jailbroke' my kindle, although it's really just running a script to access to the screensaver files. I'm surprised it isn't something they allow you to do by default, it's not like there is much else you can do to customise your device. The screen looks way more awesome now that I have fractals and space-scapes instead of Jane Austen :)

Ooooh, I didn't know you could do this...please tell me more!

So, I got my Kindle last week. Immediatly downloaded Lovecrafts collected works, Robert E Howards stuff about Conan and Kull, The Collected work of Shakespeare and all those Sherlock Holmes stories.

I'm half way through the Lovecraft stuff and having used the machine pretty much all weekend, I can say that the Kindle is fucking awesome.

I am not going back to paper books any time soon. The Kindle is so much more handy and comfortable.

The one problem I have with the kindle store is that you do kind of need an idea what you want to buy - it's way more difficult to browse tens of thousands of books than it is to stand in front of a shelf and see if there is anything new. Just finished Side Jobs (which I haven't even seen in SA, booyah :D) and now I'm a bit stuck as to what to read next :D

I go to my local bookstores still, I just make a written list of stuff that looks good instead of buying now. Then I go home and DL from Amazon.

Unless it's one of the ones I want a physical version of (SE or GRRM, or Butcher ect.)

Yeah, the independant publications kinda swamp the category searches.

I have a B&W Nook. Picked up the new Kindle at Staples this weekend. Wow, is it thin.

I'm currently re-reading SoIaF on my Nook. So much easier to tote around that the huge hardbacks. I can even read while holding my 18-month old. e-readers rock.

Agreed. Currently re-reading CLASH Of KINGS on my Kindle and I feel the same way!

Arise thread
ARISE

Hopefully I'll be doing a lot of regional work for a while and as such buying an ever increasing library with nowhere to store it is a no.

Thinking about the eBook route.

I'm hearing good things about the kindle with its eink and all, but their DRM proprietary bullshit where they can apparently just rip books from your kindle at any time doesn't sound great.
what about the Sony readers, are they as good, better? The biggest issue I can predict with another reader would be that amazon likely have the biggest library. Also, is the aus eBook market as restricted as some other countries appears to be?
I'm lazy but in my defends I have no laptop currently to properly search up specs and info on stuff, so have pity or something for me and tell me what to buy and why.

I'm not sure about the answers to your questions. But, I am a huge Kindle fan. I have a Fire and love it, it's my primary reading device. And I have the Kindle apps on my Android phone and iPad. The pricing is usually a bit less than a physical copy. As for pulling books, I don't think they have done it often and it's not in their best interest to make it a common practice. And in my experience, Amazon always gives me a refund, no questions asked, when I have complained about any purchase. So, I would not be too concerned about that. I want to get a Kindle Touch for reading outdoors and for the 'read to me' feature.

I resisted the Kindle for a while but got one at Christmas and I love it. A perfect supplement to my books but I don't intend to ever let it replace my books. Still, the free stuff is really good and as I travel a fair bit to and fro it is handy as hell.

I borrowed the GFs one to read Reamd - saved a weight there.

The only drawback I find is that you can't use them during takeoff and landing on planes.

Got the Sony.
Love it already, light, handy and very easy on the eyes.
Added bonus, the cover has a light adjustable reading light. Awesome

Having now Kindle'd several books on my hand-me-down DX, I love it. No more hardbacks for me.

My wife loves her Kindle Fire, but the loss of the eInk screen is a serious knock against it if you're a hardcore reader. She's actually debating getting a non-Fire Kindle for reading. Awesome for web, apps, and games though. Plus you don't need a data plan to use it.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

I need to use my Kindle more. I have about 20 books on it, 15 of which are already "read"...but every time I want a book I hit the bookstore. I just can't break the habit. I need to start thinking about getting eBook versions right away before I consider popping out to the store.

I will do it, because I LOVE reading on my Kindle.

My brother and I talked about this. For him, it's the thrill of the hunt. You just never know what you'll find trolling the shelves.

Couldn't resist picking up a Playbook tablet when the prices dropped (i know, i know... RIM, iPad, Fire, Nook yaddayaddayadda i'm happy with it leave me alone).
Add a reader app and yay!

But naturally i have more physical books in the TRP than i know what to do with so i'm not foresaking physical books any time soon.

I see the arguments for a 'pure' reader over a tablet, but i opted for a toy that offers more than just e-books.
